Abstract: The present invention is an improved building panel having increased strength and rigidity, thereby reducing present design constraints imposed upon buildings constructed of interconnected panels. The building panel includes a novel curved central portion connected to two diverging inclined side wall portions in lieu of a straight central portion. Replacing the straight curved portion with a curved portion provides the building panel with increased strength and rigidity, thereby allowing the building panel to withstand increased positive and negative bending moments. Thus, a building constructed of panels having such curved central portions will reduce the present design constraints and increase the size and shape of buildings constructed of such panels.

Abstract: A system for diverting rain water from the underside of a deck structure is comprised of a side-by-side array of flexible water-collecting elements , each of which collect and divert rain water from a regional area of the deck structure. Each water-collecting element is shaped to control the flow of water without restriction or impediment. This shape further increases the rigidity to the water-collecting element making it relatively easy to install and support. Coupling elements are interposed between adjacent water-collecting elements which function to fix them together such that the resulting array gains structural properties and impermeability comparable to a single corrugated sheet of the same material. Mounting elements secure this array to the underside of the deck. The result is an aesthetically attractive and environmentally rugged system which is realized with very economical components.

  • Patent number: 5737894
Abstract: A standing seam roof assembly in which adjacent roof panels are supported by underlying support structure in overlapping edge relationship to form a standing seam between adjacent roof panels is disclosed. A two piece hold down clip having a hook shaped section and a clip base secures the standing seam to the underlying support structure. The hook shaped section includes a slidable radiused portion, a substantially vertically extending portion and a hook portion which hooks over and is compressively secured to a corresponding radiused portion of the male sidelap portion. The slidable radiused portion slidably engages a c-shaped beam portion of the clip base, allowing the hook shaped section to move relative to the clip base as the panels expand and contract as a result of environmental conditions, while still resisting the unfurling and unzipping of the standing seam as a result of uplift forces on the panels.

  • Patent number: 5737881
Abstract: An interlocking roof system of tiers of successively higher interlocking panels mounted on base members, each panel being held in place by protrusions fitted into notches in the base member of the next higher tier, the panels of each higher tier having a groove wrapped about and locked onto a lip of the adjacent lower panel, side lips and clips being used to connect adjacent panels located in the same horizontal tier. The base member of the lowest tier is mounted at its lowest edge on a riser along the lowest edge of the roof being covered and at its upper edge on the rafters of the roof being covered. The next lowest base member is located at its lowest edge along the upper edge of the adjacent lower base member and at its upper edge on the rafters.

  • Patent number: 5697197
Abstract: A standing seam roof assembly in which adjacent roof panels are supported by underlying support structure in overlapping edge relationship to form a standing seam between adjacent roof panels is disclosed. A plurality of fasteners secures medial portions of the roof panels to underlying support structure so that the standing seam is prevented from unfurling during uplift of the roof panels. The fasteners rigidly attach the roof panels to the underlying support structure, or alternatively, secure adjacent roof panels relative to one another. Additionally, the use of a floating underlying structure allows the panels to expand and contract as a result of environmental conditions without damaging the panels or underlying structural connections. The fasteners may be located adjacent to structural corrugation crowns located in the medial portions of the panels as well as adjacent to the standing seam.

  • Patent number: 5644882
Abstract: A roofing system for a substantially flat roof comprises at least one elongated member. The elongated member extends upwardly from the roof structure and has a bottom surface and an upper surface. Side edges from two waterproof flexible panels are positioned adjacent the upper surface of the elongated member. The side edges of the panels are secured to the upper surface of the elongated member by nailing the same thereto. The resulting seam between the two panels is located above the maximum level of water that may build up on the roof structure during heavy rains. A cap in the form of an elongated sheet of aluminum covers the seam between the two panels. The intersection between a flexible panel and a riser pipe or duct is also positioned above the roof level to similarly prevent standing water from entering the same.

  • Patent number: 5242736
Abstract: A seamless tube useful in making a roofing batten is extruded from a polymeric material consisting essentially of a major amount of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and a minor amount of at least one polyolefin, flattened in a vacuum sizer so as to define two plies, and milled and drawn so as to orient the tube longitudinally. As milled and drawn, the tube is oriented so as to have a tensile strength of at least about 25,000 psi in a longitudinal direction. The plies are punched so as to have holes therethrough at spaced intervals along the tube. When used to make a roofing batten to coact with conventional fasteners, such as roofing screws, the tube exhibits superior characteristics of split resistance and pull-through resistance.

  • Patent number: 5209039
Abstract: An apparatus for interconnecting a pair of spaced-apart form panels includes a tie having opposing ends inserted through apertures in the panels, and retainer plates on each end to lock the panels in position. Each tie includes an elongated strap having an expanded lug at each end to prevent movement of the panel inwardly past the lug. A loop member is mounted on each lug which projects outwardly through the panel and which will receive the retainer plate to lock the panel in position on each end of the strap. The retainer plate has an aperture therethrough and a finger extending downwardly into the aperture. The retainer plate finger is journaled through the loop of the strap to lock the retainer plate onto the strap end to hold the form panel in position.

  • Patent number: 5031374
Abstract: A new roofing system (14) for installation on a structure (2) whose existing roof deck (6) and membrane (12) may include depressed regions (8, 10) compensates for the depressed regions with contour cut compensation panels (18). Filler panels (20) are placed atop the roof deck, membrane and any required compensation panels, with opposed perimeter edges (64) of adjacent filler panels abutting. The filler panels are secured to the underlying roof deck with anchor plates (22) and screws (70), one anchor plate preferably securing four adjacent filler panels at the junction of their corners. The filler panels may have uniform thickness (58) or, if a sloped roofing system is to be fabricated, they may have non-uniform thickness (60, 62). Lengths (82, 88) of roofing material (76), such as galvanized metal, are laid atop the upper surface (72) of the filler panels and anchor plates and are secured to the anchor plates with screws (92).
