The laminated shingle includes an overlay member and an underlay member fixedly attached to each other. The overlay member is also coated with a layer of relatively dark granules to form horizontally-oriented overlay shading areas on the upper and lower edges of the tabs. The underlay member is coated with a layer of relatively dark granules to form vertically and horizontally-oriented underlay shading areas. In one embodiment, one or both vertical edges of each tab are generally parallel to the vertically-oriented longitudinal axis of the vertically-oriented shading area to expose a portion of the shading area.

The upper edge of the roofing shingle can then be subsequently overlapped by the flap when the flap is moved into the flat position. Tar is placed between the overlapping and the overlapped corners in order to utilize solar energy to seal the corners of the adjacent shingles to one another after the nails have been inserted.

    Abstract: An integral, one-piece, multi-layered shingle and method of fabrication from a planar sheet of shingle material, e.g., asphalt. The planar sheet comprises a base portion having first and second, parallel, lateral edges, with plural elongated tabs extending from the first lateral edge. The plural elongated tabs are uniquely different but each features a side edge midportion perpendicular to the first lateral edge. Extending from the second lateral edge are a like plurality of short tabs, where the short tabs are laterally offset from the elongated tabs. In a roof placement mode, the elongated tabs are first folded onto the base portion at a midpoint thereof, then reversely bent back upon themselves to form a three layer section. To complete the fabrication, the base portion is folded toward the folded elongated tabs such that the short tabs are positioned adjacent at least one elongated tab to form a second section of two layers.

When the shingle is installed on a roof deck with other substantially identically shaped shingles in overlapping longitudinal courses, adjacent shingles in the same course of shingles have fractional tabs that adjoin each other and that are of the same generally uniform color blend so that the two adjoining fractional tabs have the appearance of a single tab.

In another embodiment, the width of each tab is randomly selected and the width of the vertically-oriented shading area is a function of the width of the adjacent tab.     Abstract: Laminated shingles are manufactured from roll stock roofing material that is wider than that used to make similar laminated shingles. The roll stock includes longitudinal edge strips having a reduced thickness. The roll stock is cut into strips of tabbed top sheets and backing sheets. The strips of material used for the backing sheets are at once wider than commonly used in the industry, and include the longitudinal edge strips of reduced-thickness material. Because the backing sheet is wider two rain seal strips are laid down on the backing sheet prior to being laminated to the tabbed top sheet. The backing sheets are laminated to the tabbed top sheets with the longitudinal edges aligned. The wider backing sheet provides a substantially wider nail zone. In addition, since it allows for a second rain seal strip, provides somewhat more protection against leakage. The portion of the backing sheet that comprises the added width is relatively thinner than the remaining portions of the sheet.

    Abstract: A vinyl siding panel which includes a top lock, a medial main body portion, a bottom lock, and a nailing hem adjacent the top lock comprises a channel with nail apertures in the channel base for receiving siding nails. The channel has an open end which has a dimension smaller than the nail head diameter so that the nail head bears against shoulders or bearing surfaces formed adjacent the channel. The channel can be of rectangular or tapered cross-section in order to space the nail head away from the nail apertures and thereby eliminate stress concentrations at the apertures. The lock structures are generally complementary in shape so that they interlock with other siding panels of like construction. The panel can be reinforced along its length for added rigidity. One area of reinforcement is the channel nailing hem which can be reinforced by extruding additional material to form the channel or by providing an elongated trough-like insert nested within the channel.

Adhesive is placed in the overlapping area of adjacent shingles to connect such shingles, leaving the corners unattached so that the upper, overlapping corners can be lifted to nail the lower, overlapped corners to the roof. Tar is placed between the overlapping and the overlapped corners in order to utilize solar energy to seal the corners of the adjacent shingles to one another after the nails have been inserted.

    Abstract: An asphalt composition ridge cover and method of forming the same whereby a decorative appearance somewhat resembling that of a shake roof ridge cover is achieved. The ridge cover generally is a pair of flat, approximately rectangular pieces of asphalt composition roofing material, having a plurality of tabs at one end of each piece which are folded over one another thereby forming a region of increased thickness at that end. The two pieces are adhesively joined in a plurality of areas including an area disposed to both sides of the central fold that forms the ridge line of ridge cover when installed, thereby holding the ridge cover in a folded configuration. The adhesive may contain a solid filler to increase the thickness of the ridge cover. The adhesive joining in the vicinity of the central folding inhibits further bending along the central fold and thereby reduces cracking.
