Abstract: The underside of the tab portion of an asphalt shingle is provided with a layer of foamed asphalt. The foamed asphalt layer may be continuous or discontinuous.
Abstract: A rectangular shingle sheet having a butt portion which is longitudinally divided into spaced apart tab segments and an undivided headlap portion which is 1.3 to 1.5 times higher than the outward extensions of said tab segments in said butt portion; said butt portion and headlap portion carrying an asphaltic backing of varying thickness Wherein the upper area of the headlap portion which is of a height approximately equal to that of the butt portion is coated with an asphaltic backing of between about 5 and about 15 mils thickness and the remaining lower area of the headlap portion and the entire butt portion is unifomly coated with an asphaltic backing of between about 20 and about 75 mils thickness. In one embodiment, the shingle is a composite roofing shingle comprising a shingle sheet having a butt portion which is longitudinally divided into tab segments spaced apart by between about 0.5 and about 1.5 their width and an undivided headlap portion which is between about 1.3 and about 1.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to the field of composition shingles and in particular the types of shingle known as strip or tab shingles. Heretofore shingles having nonuniform random or jagged butt edges have relied on locating indicia on the upper covered portions of the leading and trailing edges thereof, or on the upper edge of the overall shingle, to aid in positioning these shingles relative to one another on a roof deck. Tab shingles have been able to eliminate at least some of the locating indicia in these areas by relying on uniformly sized and positioned slot cutouts to locate the uniform butt edges of the overlapping shingle relative to the shingle being overlapped. The present shingle includes at least one slot dividing the butt edge into two tabs. The lower edge of the tabs corresponding to a portion of the butt edge of the shingle include specifically shaped locating edges. These locating edges contribute to the jagged nonuniform appearance of the shingle.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of roof coverings, specifically laminated roof shingles formed of mineral granule covered, asphalt saturated felt material. The disclosed shingle when combined with other shingles on a roof deck simulates a tile covered roof. This simulation is accomplished by making a generally rectangular laminated shingle having a headlap portion and an exposed butt portion made up of a regular uniform series of substantially identically shaped tabs with spaces therebetween defining exposed portions of an underlay member attached to the lower surface of the tabs. The lower edges of these tabs and spaces define a butt edge having a generally continuously curving sinuous contour. The tabs have generally straight sides which taper from this butt edge to the lower edge of the headlap portion. A plurality of such shingles are placed on a roof deck such that the tabs are aligned vertically up the roof deck and the spaces between these tabs are also vertically aligned.
Abstract: Disclosed is a shingle having an enhanced relief effect which thereby simulates roofing slate or roofing tile. The enhanced relief effect is provided by covering at least a portion of the underside of the shingle with a layer of expanded particulated material such as spheres of expanded polystyrene. The shingle further includes a stiffening layer over the layer of expanded particulated material which tends to reduce the elasticity of the shingle.
