Abstract: A method of making light weight flame resistant structures from bonded polyimide macroballoons and products thereof. An aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride is reacted with an oxoimine to produce an N-substituted imide, which is then esterfied with a suitable alcohol. The resulting liquid is dried and the dry residue is reduced to a uniform powder having particles with diameters generally in the 0.5 to 10 mm. range. The powder is preferably further dried, either before or after final size reduction, in a moderate vacuum at moderate temperature to remove any excess residual alcohol. The powder spontaneously expands to form a closed cell foam when heated to a temperature in the range of about 90.degree. to 150.degree. C. for a suitable period. When the powder is expanded in a closed mold, a well consolidated, uniform, closed cell foam product results. The closed cell foam produced has excellent flexibility and resistance to heat and flame, and does not shrink appreciably when exposed to flame.

Ketones are employed to reversably block primary amine groups on polyamine curing agents during the initial curing. As the cure progresses, the block is removed to complete the cure. The result is a moderation of peak exotherms generally associated with the cure, inhibiting degradation of the product foam.

Abstract: Polyester silicate resinous products are produced by mixing an organic epoxide compound, hydrated silica, Lewis acid and a polycarboxylic acid and/or polycarboxylic acid anhydride, then heating the mixture to from 150.degree. C. to 250.degree. C. for 30 minutes to 4 hours. The polyester is silicate resinous products may be used as a coating agent, as a molding powder and as an adhesive.
Abstract: An expandable vinyl chloride resin composition for foaming under atmospheric pressure which comprises a resin ingredient comprising (A) a vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer having substantially no active hydrogens, (B) a vinyl chloride copolymer having active hydrogens and (C) a thermoplastic polyurethane resin, and a crosslinking agent, a foaming agent, a thermal stabilizer and a plasticizer, the ratio of the components (A), (B) and (C) being 30 to 90:5 to 40:5 to 40 by weight. The composition is expanded under atmospheric pressure to give a foam of a high expansion ratio which has uniform and fine cells and shows an excellent rubber-like elasticity.
Abstract: Epoxy compounds will react chemically with an amine to produce an epoxy prepolymer that will produce a self-standing cellular solid product upon heating.
Abstract: Storable, solid mixture of (a) a long-chain epoxide resin which is free from ester groups and has a high epoxide equivalent weight, (b) an epoxide resin which is free from ester groups, contains cyclic structure and two to three epoxide groups in the molecule and has a low epoxide equivalent weight, (c) a triphenol and (d) a curing accelerator and, if desired, a blowing agent. Laminates, foams, compression moulded articles and adhesive bonds which are stable to hydrolysis, resistant to heat distortion and flexible are obtained on heating.

Abstract: New and useful blends of thermosetting resins with copolymers of certain amounts of ethylene with another monomer copolymerizable therewith to provide solid but flexible polymers, and a third monomer containing epoxy side groups, and optionally carbon monoxide, are provided.
