  • Patent number: 7544760
Abstract: It is a task of the present invention to provide a polymerizer device and a polymerizer system which enable the production, by melt transesterification, of a high quality, high performance aromatic polycarbonate (which is colorless and has excellent mechanical properties) from a molten aromatic polycarbonate prepolymer obtained by reacting an aromatic dihydroxy compound with a diaryl carbonate, wherein the polycarbonate can be stably produced on a commercial scale at 1 to 50 t/hr for a long time. In the present invention, this task has been accomplished by a guide-wetting fall polymerizer device (in which a molten prepolymer is allowed to fall along and in contact with a guide, thereby effecting polymerization of the prepolymer) having a specific structure and a polymerizer system comprising such devices.

Even without using thixotropic agents, compounds can be obtained which do not sag at temperatures over 40.degree. C. Such joint sealants can be used to fill joints more than 35 mm wide without sagging.

Abstract: Intercalates formed by contacting the layer material, e.g., a phyllosilicate, with an intercalant polymer to sorb or intercalate the polymer between adjacent platelets of the layered material. Sufficient intercalant polymer is sorbed between adjacent platelets to expand the adjacent platelets to a spacing of at least about 50 .ANG. (as measured after water removal to a maximum of 5% by weight water), up to about 100 .ANG. and preferably in the range of about 10-45 .ANG., so that the intercalate easily can be exfoliated into individual platelets. The intercalated complex is combined with an organic liquid into an unexpectedly viscous carrier material, for delivery of the carrier material, or for delivery of an active compound, e.g., a pharmaceutical, or cosmetic, or lubricant, e.g., food guide lubricants dissolved or dispersed in the carrier material. Alternatively, the intercalated complex can be exfoliated prior to combination with the organic liquid.

  • Patent number: 5710434
Abstract: The invention is directed to a composition of matter useful as a paper impregnant, to the method of its use, and to the products produced by the method. Poly (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) or PMDI has been used in the past as a paper impregnant with or without propylene carbonate as a diluent. These products have generally required pressing under high pressures and at elevated temperatures. It has now been found that triacetin and/or triethyl citrate in usages up to about 20% of PMDI give superior performance in impregnated products. The modified PMDI will cure at essentially ambient conditions in times as short as 1-2 days to insoluble polyureas with low residual amounts of isocyanates and reaction byproducts such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. The treated papers can be used in applications of which skins for sandwich panels and high strength corrugated board would be exemplary.
