Patent number: 5665814Abstract: An improved silane/silica sol copolymer hardcoating composition for protecting optical plastic substrates from scratching is able to be manufactured at lower costs and to provide much-improved ease of use in transportation, storage, dipbath stability, and blush resistance in ordinary cleanroom atmospheres. The silane/silica sol copolymer is formed as a direct reaction product of an acidic silica sol and an monomethyl trialkoxy silane, preferably substantially monomethyltriethoxysilane, in ratios of 30:70 to 70:30, most preferably about 40:60. A tail solvent aids blush resistance and adhesion to unprimed polycarbonate. Optionally, colloidal silica sol dissolved in water-miscible solvent may be reacted in a second stage with acidic aqueous colloidal silica sol earlier silanized with monomethyl trialkoxy silane.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1995Date of Patent: September 9, 1997Assignee: Abchem ManufacturingInventors: William Lewis, George Galic

Patent number: 4943609Abstract: A curable rubber bladder stock containing esters of ricinoleic acid or derivatives thereof has reduced viscosity as compared to stocks containing castor oil. The rubber stocks of the present invention generally retain a very high percentage of the initial cure tensile strength and have improved modulus as compared to castor oil, both upon initial cure and upon aging. Lower viscosity and higher modulus of the rubber stocks of the present invention readily permit the production of thinner bladders. The bladders can fit within an article such as a tire during vulcanization of the tire as in an automatic vulcanizing press. Thinner bladders effect a greater heat rate and result in shorter cure times for articles such as tires. The esters of ricinoleic acid and derivatives thereof have the formula ##STR1## where R is H or ##STR2## where R.sup.1 is an aliphatic, preferably an alkyl, having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, desirably from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and preferably 1 carbon atom, i.e., methyl, and R.sup.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1989Date of Patent: July 24, 1990Assignee: The Uniroyal Goodrich Tire CompanyInventor: Terrence M.
