Abstract: A continuous filler treatment process has been developed to enhance the fixation of anionic latex on filler in a short time. In this process anionic polymer dispersions (latex) are added to common papermaking filler slurries at ambient temperature and then mixed with water of temperature higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the latex used. To efficiently fix the latex the temperature of the filler/latex mixture must be 30-60° C. higher than the Tg of the latex used. The chemical composition of the resin and the type of surfactant used during the emulsion polymerisation process of the polymer latex dispersions are important factors for efficiently fixing the latex onto the filler by adding hot water and improving the properties of paper made with the treated filler. The enhanced fixation of anionic latex onto filler using hot water is done in mixing vessels that can control shear and mixing time.

  • Patent number: 8076403
Abstract: The process of the present invention produces an aqueous dispersion of mineral materials, suitable for use in pigments and other coatings, by introducing a fully neutralized dispersing agent to an aqueous dispersion of coarse mineral materials, grinding the aqueous dispersion and, during grinding, adding a partially neutralized dispersing agent to the aqueous dispersion. The process of the present invention produces aqueous dispersions of very fine particles, having a solids content of at least 75% by weight, based on the total weight of the aqueous dispersion, and wherein 95% or more of the particles are below 2 microns.

Abstract: A method of incorporating an additive into a polyamide-poly(arylene ether) composition includes the step of melt blending a polyamide, a poly(arylene ether), and a dispersion comprising a liquid carrier, an unmodified clay, and an additive. Using the dispersion rather than a polymer-based additive masterbatch saves energy. Like a polymer-based masterbatch, the dispersion provides the additive in a diluted form and therefore preserves the masterbatch's advantages of providing more uniform distribution additive in the plastic and avoiding direct handling of additives in the final compounding step.

Abstract: The invention concerns the polymers obtained by the use of sulfur compounds in a process for controlled radical polymerization in water of acrylic acid and/or acrylic acid with hydrosoluble monomers. It concerns also their uses as dispersant agents or agents to aid grinding and/or co-grinding of mineral matters in aqueous suspensions, and as dispersant agents incorporated directly in aqueous formulations containing mineral matters. Finally, the invention concerns the formulations of mineral matters obtained in this manner.

Abstract: A mixture of a high molecular weight EPDM rubber with a low molecular weight (liquid) EPDM rubber provides a highly useful laser-ablatable flexographic printing plate precursor formulation. This formulation is sensitive to infrared radiation by the incorporation of an IR absorbing compound such as a carbon black. The inclusion of the liquid EPDM rubber avoids the need for plasticizers such as process oils during manufacturing, and provides improved image sensitivity, print quality, and run length. Both flexographic printing plates and printing sleeves can be made using the mixture of EPDM rubbers.
