  • Publication number: 20040087728
Abstract: A carbamate or terminal urea functional vinyl polymer is prepared by reacting a compound having an hydroxyl group and a carbamate group, terminal urea group, or a group that can be converted to a carbamate or terminal urea group, with a cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride group to form an ester bond and a free acid group from the anhydride; and reacting the free acid group with a compound having an epoxide group. The cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride group may be pendant to a vinyl polymer, or one of the compound having an hydroxyl group, a compound having the cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride group, and the compound having an epoxide group may have polymerizable ethylenic unsaturation that is polymerized, optionally with one or more copolymerizable monomers to form a vinyl polymer. When the compound having an hydroxyl group has a group that can be converted to a carbamate or terminal urea group, the group is converted to the carbamate or terminal urea group after step (a).

Abstract: Substrates having a water-soluble substance subject to migration toward the surface of the substrate are treated or coated with a composition comprising a a latex or solution of a film forming polymer and sufficient imidized maleic anhydride polymer dispersant or emulsifier to inhibit the migration toward the surface of the water-soluble substance. Preferably a styrene-maleic anhydride polymer is imidized with a diamine and is made cationic by neutralizing with an acid. The imidized polymer is preferably the only surfactant or dispersant in the latex composition. Pigment pastes and primers comprising the imidized polymer can be applied to substrates to confer water and alkaline hydrolysis resistance and to prevent the migration of any water soluble substance in the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6291594
Abstract: Compositions useful for textile sizes which contain anhydride based graft copolymers. The anhydride based graft copolymers are the reaction product of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, an anhydride monomer selected from maleic anhydride and itaconic anhydride, either a monofunctional polyglycol having a hydroxyl or amine terminal group or a polyfunctional polyglycol having a weight average molecular weight of greater than 5,000 and at least one terminal hydroxyl group, and a free radical initiator. The anhydride based graft copolymers provide lubrication during sizing and a thorough removal of waxes and oils during desizing and scouring.

  • Patent number: 6255405
Abstract: A high-performance anti-reflective coating which highly absorbs a given light, e.g., deep ultraviolet rays, tenaciously adheres to substrates upon coating formation, is satisfactory in covering, and eliminates the influence of standing waves in the production of integrated circuits; novel light-absorbing polymers for forming the anti-reflective coating; and a process for producing the polymers. One of the polymers is produced by esterifying a copolymer comprising carboxylic anhydride groups and/or dicarboxylic acid groups such as maleic acid as basic recurring units with a hydroxylated aromatic chromophore. The unreacted carboxylic acid groups or acid anhydride groups remaining in the esterified light-absorbing polymer may be amidated and/or imidized with an aminated aromatic compound.

  • Patent number: 6235811
Abstract: Hybrid polymeric compositions of epoxy resin and vinyl acetate polymer are combined in an aqueous emulsion also containing an emulsifying agent and isophoronediamine as a hardener for the epoxy resin. The emulsion is stable for long periods of time but can be cast and cured at room temperature, providing a one-pot system for the preparation of protective coatings, laminating adhesives, and the like. The vinyl acetate polymer must be emulsion polymerized independently of the epoxy resin and is preferably a copolymer of vinyl acetate with ethylene or n-butyl acrylate. The pot life of these hybrid polymer emulsions containing the epoxy hardening agent is at least one month and frequently as long as a year.
