  • Patent number: 5373068
Abstract: Use of isophoronediamine isomer mixtures containing more than 40%, preferably more than 50 up to 70%, of the trans-isomer and less than 60%, preferably less than 50 down to 30%, of the cis-isomer as reactant in polyaddition resins selected from epoxy, polyurethane and polyurea resins. As curing agents in epoxy resins compared with previously known isomer mixtures, the isomer mixtures containing more than 40% of the trans-isomer and less than 60% of the cis-isomer unexpectedly lead to an extended pot life with simultaneously reduced maximum curing temperature and therefore reduced shrinkage problems. The isomer mixtures are also surprisingly suitable as amine components with reduced reactivity for the chain extension of polyurethane/polyureas.

The present invention can dispense with the steps of esterification, transesterification, etc., because of the use of the preformed polyester. Moreover, it shortens the reaction time so that only a small quantity of polyester is produced as a by-product. In addition, since the thermal history of the polyesterh is so small, deterioration of the polymer during production is suppressed. Furthermore, this process enables continuous production of products with good quality, which serves to markedly improve productivity.

Abstract: A unsaturated polyester resin composition is described that contains an epoxy resin reacted with an amine-terminated flexible polymer while dissolved in the unsaturated polyester resin and its ethylenically unsaturated crosslinking monomer. A compatible system results from the reaction which has a controllable modulus based on the amount of flexible polymer included in the resin. The resin is generally transparent if unfilled and has a higher calculated fracture energy than similar unsaturated polyester resin without modification. The unsaturated polyester resin can be filled with particulate filler or reinforced with fibrous fillers.

Abstract: Blow-moldable polybutylene terephthalate resin compositions include a polybutylene terephthalate base polymer and an effective amount of between 0.01 to 5 parts by weight (based on 100 parts by weight of the polybutylene terephthalate base polymer) of an organosilane compound to allow blow-molding of hollow articles therefrom. Optionally, the compositions further include between 0.5 to 30 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of the polybutylene terephthalate base polymer, of an olefinic copolymer of an .alpha.-olefin with an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated glycidyl ester. The organosilane and, when present, the olefinic copolymer increase the melt tension of the compositions to an extent that a tubular parison does not increase more than 25% in length when suspended under its own weight for 10 seconds. In this manner, the polybutylene terephthalate resin compositions may be satisfactorily used to form blow-molded hollow articles.

  • Patent number: 5130369
Abstract: Functionalized polymeric compositions are prepared by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated functional monomer in a solvent including a reactive compound. The functional groups of the reactive compound and the functional monomer react during or subsequent to the polymerization of the functional monomer to provide functionalized polymeric composition. The reactive compound can be a hydroxy-terminated, poly(ethleneoxy)ated hydrophobe-bearing compound and the functional monomer can be a polymerizable carboxylated monomer, the functionalization in this case being a condensation. Removal of the water of condensation by azeotropic distillation drives the reaction to completion. The resulting high solids functionalized polymeric composition is soluble or dispersible in an appropriate solvent, and can be used as is, diluted with a solvent, or isolated.
