    Abstract: A bag made of a flexible packing material comprising a sheet of material having an inner face and an outer face and folded for the formation of a tube with an overlapping portion. In the overlapping portion, the packing material is sealed inner face to outer face by means of a lapseal. Along two side edge portions, the tube is welded inner face to outer face of the overlapping portion for obtaining a closed bag enclosing the packed product. The packing material provides a peel seal, when welded inner face to outer face and a strong seal when welded inner face to inner face. Seen relative to the bag, the packing material comprises an inner layer comprising polyethylene, and outer layer comprising a copolymer of polyethylene and polypropylene and a subjacent intermediate layer comprising polypropylene.

According to the method, a strip-like partition is inserted between the two side walls of the packaging and at least one longitudinal mid-portion (13) of the strip constitutes said partition and has evenly spaced communicating means (8) arranged above the bottom seal (10) of the packaging, and each side wall of the packaging is sealed to one edge of the partition. Alternative embodiments of such a packaging are also disclosed.

    Abstract: System and method for packing loose fill materials in bags to form cushions for use in protecting articles in shipping cartons. The bags are produced from a length of flexible plastic tubing which is gathered or bunched to form a coil which is disposed about the outlet of a loose fill dispenser. A section of the tubing is pulled from the coil, and its lower end is closed to form a bag which is then filled with loose fill material dispensed through the outlet. Another section of tubing is then pulled from the coil, and the tubing is drawn together to close the upper end of the first section and the lower end of the second section. The closed ends are secured with tape, and the tubing is severed to separate the first section from the second. The cushions thus formed are placed in the shipping cartons with the articles, and in some embodiments are compressed and reexpanded in conformance with the contour of the articles.

    Abstract: A bag maker bends an elongated flexible bag-making film into a tubular form and transversely seals it by a transverse sealer while filling it with articles to produce packaged bags. The transverse sealer has two seal jaws at both sides of the film being pulled downwards. The seal jaws are each caused to move in a generally D-shaped trajectory with a vertically straight portion where they move along the film, sandwiching it therebetween. The seal jaws are operated so as to move faster than the film while on the top half of the straight portion of the trajectory where stripping takes place and more slowly than the film while on the bottom half of the straight portion such that the film will blouse to make it easier for articles to drop deeper inside the bag being produced. The speed of each seal jaw on the arcuate part of its trajectory is adjusted such that the period of the cyclic motion of the seal jaws need not be modified.

    Abstract: A system and method for forming bags and reliably filling them with solids (such as snack food) prevent blockages of the solids during the filling process, and enable the bag forming and bag filling processes to occur continuously in an overlapping manner, thus improving production efficiency. Longitudinal openings are provided in the lower end of a hollow tubular vertical mandrel. Solids fall by gravity through the interior of the mandrel toward a bag that is formed at the bottom of the mandrel. The longitudinal openings allow solids to protrude radially outward from the mandrel if they form a blockage in the mandrel. The protruding solids that are part of the blockage are dislodged by frictional contact with a tubular film as it is forwarded snugly down the exterior of the mandrel. The film ultimately form the bag into which the solids fall.

The film tracking and film cage tilting are on a common axis, which simplifies the design and reduces the parts. The tiltable film cage has the added advantage of improving the access to the inside area of the machine when the film cage is tilted to the load position. This feature of the invention also reduces the overall size of the machine.

Suitable compositions are prepared by mixing together a hydraulic binder, water, and appropriate additives (such as aggregates, fibers, and rheology-modifying agents) which impart predetermined properties so that a sheet formed therefrom has the desired performance criteria. Hydraulically settable sheets are formed from the mixture by extrusion, then calendering the sheets using a set of rollers and then drying the sheets in an accelerated manner to substantially harden the sheets. The resulting hydraulically settable sheets may have properties substantially similar to sheets made from presently used materials like paper, cardboard, polystyrene, or plastic. The sheets can be laminated, corrugated, coated, printed on, scored, perforated, cut, folded, rolled, spiral wound, molded, assembled and seamed to mass produce articles of manufacture from the sheets such as food and beverage containers.

Intermittent impulse sealing bars are utilized for heating the exterior surfaces of the seam so as to heatseal the bases of the fastener strips to the interior surfaces of the seam. Vertical longitudinal sealing bars are further provided externally from the impulse sealing bars which seal the longitudinal seam proximate the lateral edges of the continuous web. A pair of transverse sealing bars form the top seal of a first container and the bottom seal of a second container.

The physical variable to be selected may be the torque on the motor which serves to move the seal jaws towards each other.

Means are provided for forming a hermetically sealed cross-seal which are disposed substantially transverse to the longitudinal forward moving direction of the web.
