Abstract: The methods described herein enable the evaluation of compounds on subjects to assess their therapeutic efficacy or toxic effects. The target of analysis is the underlying biochemical process or processes (i.e., metabolic process) thought to be involved in disease pathogenesis. Molecular flux rates within the one or more biochemical processes serve as biomarkers and are quantitated and compared with the molecular flux rates (i.e., biomarker) from control subjects (i.e., subjects not exposed to the compounds). Any change in the biomarker in the subject relative to the biomarker in the control subject provides the necessary information to evaluate therapeutic efficacy of an administered drug or a toxic effect and to develop the compound further if desired. In one aspect of the invention, stable isotope-labeled substrate molecules are administered to a subject and the label is incorporated into targeted molecules in a manner that reveals molecular flux rates through one or more metabolic pathways of interest.

Abstract: Recombinant DNA techniques are used to produce oleaginous recombinant cells that produce triglyceride oils having desired fatty acid profiles and regiospecific or stereospecific profiles. Genes manipulated include those encoding stearoyl-ACP desturase, delta 12 fatty acid desaturase, acyl-ACP thioesterase, ketoacyl-ACP synthase, and lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase. The oil produced can have enhanced oxidative or thermal stability, can be useful as a frying oil, shortening, roll-in shortening, tempering fat, cocoa butter replacement, as a lubricant, or as a feedstock for various chemical processes. The fatty acid profile can be enriched in midchain profiles or the oil can be enriched in triglycerides of the saturated-unsaturated-saturated type.

  • Patent number: 8609876
Abstract: The present invention relates to modification of the chemical structure of ricinoleic acid, which is present to an extent of 85-90% in castor oil into triacyloxy alkyl ester derivatives. Accordingly, 9,10,12-trihydroxy octadecanoic acid rich fatty acid mixture was prepared from castor oil and converted to their alkyl esters followed by acylation of hydroxy groups to get 9,10,12-triacyloxy octadecanoic acid alkyl ester rich fatty acid alkyl esters mixture. The 9,10,12-triacyloxy octadecanoic acid alkyl esters were purified from the crude product and characterized by 1H NMR studies. The crude products were also evaluated for acid value (A.V.), hydroxyl value (H. V.), iodine value (I. V.), viscosity, viscosity index (V.I.), pour point, flash point and copper strip corrosion and found to be potential base stocks for hydraulic, metal working fluids and other industrial fluids.

Abstract: Provided are compositions, processes for making, and processes for using neoalkyl polyol esters and triglycerides as plasticizers. In one form, a neoalkylester triglyceride plasticizers can be produced by (i) drying a polyol feedstream; (ii) contacting in a reactor the dried polyol feedstream with a neoacid feedstream under effective temperature, pressure and time to form a neoalkylester plasticizer effluent stream, and (iii) purifying the neoalkylester plasticizer effluent stream to remove unreacted polyol and unreacted neoacid to form a neoalkylester plasticizer. Such plasticizers can be phthalate-free and provide outstanding properties including a suitable melting or pour point, glass transition temperature, low volatility, increased compatibility, increased hydrolytic stability, and excellent low temperature properties in a range of polymeric resins.

Abstract: This invention proposes a lanolin substitute, capable of absorbing up to at least twice its weight of water or aqueous solution or aqueous suspension. It forms true emulsions, stable over time with a capacity for water absorption superior to that of lanolin. It also possesses the known emollient, moisturizing and occlusive properties of lanolin. This substitute is usable in all the present and future areas of application of lanolin: in the cosmetics industry, dermatology, and in industrial applications (polishes, lubricants . . . ). It is obtained by hemi-synthesis from a mixture of unsaturated fatty acids, esters of unsaturated fatty acids, unsaturated hydrocarbons or unsaturated derivatives of the latter and compounds comprising or generating hydroxyl functions, such as glycerol, preferably without a catalyst and in an atmosphere devoid of oxygen. Classical thermal treatment or preferably treatment by dielectric heating.
