Stable and reproducible bonded phases are prepared in a novel solventless procedure by a bonding process which uses a defined and controlled amount of water on the silica surface and a gaseous or volatile basic catalyst such as ammonia to produce a controlled amount of silane polymerization and cross-linking in addition to extensive bonding between silane and silica.

    Abstract: There are provided ultraviolet light absorbing agents of the following general formula ##STR1## wherein: ##STR2## Y is H or OH, Z is H, OH, OQ or OW, where at least one Z is OH if Y is H;Q is --CH.sub.2 (CH.sub.2).sub.n Si(R.sub.2).sub.x (OR.sub.1).sub.y ; andW is --C.sub.m H.sub.2m+1 ;where x=0, 1 or 2, y=1, 2 or 3, x+y=3, R.sub.1 =alkyl or alkanoyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 =alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, n=0, 1 or 2, and m=1 to 18. Also provided are organopolysiloxane protective coating compositions containing said ultraviolet light absorbing agents having unique utility for protecting transparent plastic articles.This invention relates to new, improved ultraviolet light absorbing agents, as well as to articles primed and thereafter coated with compositions containing such agents. The novel compounds of this invention are silanolreactive alkoxysilyl- or alkanoyloxysilylalkyl ether adducts of aromatic ultraviolet absorbing agents.
