Automatic Control Patents (Class 56/171)
  • Patent number: 6125943
Abstract: An edger-trencher is described for landscaping procedures. Instead of the usual jolting an operator receives when using traditional power assisted edger-trencher devices, in the instant invention a pivotable swing arm with cutting blade attached at one end pivots upwards and away from the soil containing an obstruction. The cutting blade then falls back rapidly and repeatedly under the influence of gravity, causing a series of pick like actions on the soil obstruction until it is overcome and normal edging or trenching resumes. The pivotable swing arm-cutting blade combination is suitable for mounting on stand-alone gasoline powered, belt-driven edger-trenchers. Alternatively, this stand-alone unit can be modified to have a quick connection to a similarly modified commercial or residential mower of the rider or walk behind type.

  • Patent number: 5187925
Abstract: A mechanism for selectively adjusting the cutting height of a mower deck carried by a vehicle having a frame. A laterally extending lift handle formed of a plastic material is engagable by the hand of the operator, and is pivotally coupled with the vehicle for pivoting motion about a generally horizontal axis as the operator lifts the first end portion. A pair of laterally spaced and generally spherical sockets are formed integral with the lift handle between the lift handle's first and second end portions. Each socket pivotally supports a ball member. Link members are provided having first portions coupled with respective ball members, and second portions pivotally coupled with the mower deck for vertically shifting the deck relative to the vehicle as the lift handle pivots. A four bar linkage is coupled between the vehicle and the deck for maintaining the deck in a generally level position throughout the deck's vertical range of motion.

  • Patent number: 5142850
Abstract: A mechanism for selectively adjusting the cutting height of a mower deck. A pivotal lift handle has a laterally extending first end portion for engagement with both of the operator's hands, and the lift handle is coupled with the deck for shifting the deck vertically as the lift handle pivots. A support member having a plurality of laterally spaced and vertically offset steps engagable with the lift handle is slidably carried by the vehicle frame and is selectively shiftable laterally by the operator to support the lift handle at a plurality of heights corresponding to respective lateral positions of the support member. A pivot rod member is pivotally coupled with the vehicle and is coupled with the support member for guiding the support member through a laterally extending arc. The pivot member is engagable by the thumbs of the operator to cause lateral shifting of the support member as the operator grasps and lifts the lift handle.

  • Patent number: 5138825
Abstract: A riding mower is provided having a generally conventional engine, seat, frame, cutting deck and hydrostatic transmission. The cutting deck may be vertically adjusted for a plurality of cutting height settings, and may be locked in its uppermost setting and returned to the pre-selected cutting height, by selective operation of a foot-operated pedal. Linkage connects the pedal to the deck and to a variable-height adjustment link. A transmission speed control includes a handle protruding upwardly adjacent the seat, connected to a transverse control rod with a distal end operatively secured to the conventional speed adjustment mechanism of the transmission. Positioned adjacent the distal end of the control rod is a friction-generating device which engages the rod and prevents unintentional movement thereof. A grass collection bag is included with a blower mounted on the cutting deck for providind an enhanced airflow from the cutting deck through the duct leading to the bag.

Abstract: A two blade mower deck for lawn and garden tractors having a continuous height adjustment feature. The mower deck includes a primary cutting blade and a smaller diameter secondary cutting blade. The secondary cutting blade is positioned to the side and slightly to the rear of the primary blade so that the cutting swaths of the blades overlap when the tractor moves forward. A continuous roller across the rear end of the mower deck follows the ground contour to prevent scalping or uneven cutting. The vertical position of the roller relative to the mower deck housing can be continuously adjusted by a crank handle to permit continuous adjustment of the cutting height.

  • Patent number: 5065568
Abstract: A mower deck height adjustment mechanism having a frame coupled to a rear base unit having driven wheels. Ground engaging wheels support the frame, and a deck is coupled to the frame. A crank handle is coupled to a transverse bar that is fixed to a lower parallel member. The operator turns the crank handle to pivot the bar and lower parallel member to thereby raise and lower the front of the deck. A bell crank couples the rear of the deck to the crank handle. The bell crank is carried by and shifts vertically with a connecting member supported by the front of the deck. As the front of the deck shifts vertically, the connecting member, bell crank, and rear portion of the deck also shift vertically. The bell crank is also operatively coupled with the bar for pivoting therewith, which also causes the rear portion of the deck to shift vertically.
