Abstract: The invention is a process for preparing a 2-halo-1-alkene comprising contacting a hydrocarbon stream with a hydrogen halide, in the presence of water and an effective amount of a catalyst, at a temperature between about 20.degree. C. and about 400.degree. C., wherein; the hydrocarbon stream comprises a 1,2-diene, a terminal acetylene or mixtures thereof, represented by the formulas CH.sub.2 .dbd.C.dbd.CH--R or CH.tbd.C--CH.sub.2 --R wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl and may be substituted or unsubstituted; the water is present in an amount capable of maintaining the selectivity of the catalyst for the insertion of the halide on the 2 carbon of the 1,2-diene or terminal acetylene; and the catalyst comprises carbon, silica alumina, aluminosilicates, silica gel, silica, silica magnesia, silicalite, group IIIA, IIIB, IVA, IVB or V metal oxides or rare earth oxides.

Abstract: Zwitterionic surfactant compounds are made readily biodegradable in the environment by the inclusion of a biochemically and/or hydrolytically labile chemical linkage located between the cationic and anionic charge centers of the compounds and anywhere from the second to the tenth atom distant from the cationic charge center. The biodegradable linkage is preferably an ester or amide. The alkoxylated zwitterionic surfactants herein exhibit outstanding particulate soil removal performance and are also effective in removing oily soils from fabrics, in addition to being readily biodegradable. Also described are detergent compositions containing the zwitterionic surfactants, and, optionally containing cosurfactants and detergent builders.

Abstract: A carbonylation process is provided for conversion of olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons to a mixture of esters or acids with a high ratio of iso:normal ester or acid by reaction with carbon monoxide and a hydroxylic compound, said process being carried out in the absence of added hydrogen or oxygen and in the presence of a palladium salt complexed with an arsine or stibine ligand as catalyst; 2-10 additional moles of arsine or stibine ligand per mole of catalyst may be present in said process to further enhance the ratio of iso:normal product and to promote catalyst stability. The catalyst, for example, may be palladium dichloride bis(triphenylarsine) or palladium dichloride bis(tri-p-tolyl arsine).
Abstract: This invention relates to novel compounds of the general formula ##STR1## Representative compounds within the scope of the invention are ##STR2## The compounds are disclosed as being useful for treating symptoms and signs of cardiac failure by stimulating the .beta.-receptors of the heart. Abstract: Aryl substituted diketones and keto-esters, useful as antiviral agents and insecticides, are prepared by reacting an arylalkyl or arylalkenyl iodide with a metal salt of the appropriate diketone or keto-ester. The intermediate iodides are prepared by condensing a methyl cyclopropyl ketone with an aromatic aldehyde to give an arylvinyl cyclopropyl ketone, reducing the latter to an arylethyl cyclopropyl carbinol or arylvinyl cyclopropyl carbinol, treating the carbinol with phosphorus tribromide and then with zinc bromide to give an arylalkyl or arylalkenyl bromide, and then replacing the bromine atom by iodine.
Abstract: 5-(2,4-difluorophenyl)salicylic acid, an anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, analgesic agent is prepared by: (1) diazotizing 2,4-difluoroaniline in the presence of benzene to yield 2,4-difluorobiphenyl; (2) Friedel-Crafts acylation to produce 2',4'-difluoro-4-alkanoylbiphenyl; (3) oxidation of the alkanoyl group to produce 2',4'-difluoro-4-alkanoyloxybiphenyl; (4) hydrolysis of the alkanoyl group to produce 4-(2,4-difluorophenyl)phenol; and (5) Kolbe-Schmitt carboxylation to produce the final product.

Abstract: A method is provided for converting a carboxylic acid amide to a carboxylic acid ester by reacting a vaporized mixture of the amide and an aliphatic alcohol or a phenol in the presence of a suitable catalyst at temperatures of from 100.degree. Abstract: The invention concerns dehydrogenation of carboxylic acids, lactones, esters, nitriles, the carbon skeleton of the feed material being characterized as containing mono-unsaturation or alternatively functional groups such as hydroxyl which convert under process conditions to unsaturation, the dehydrogenation reaction being conducted in the presence of a contact catalyst comprising a carbonaceous layer effective for the dehydrogenation of mono-unsaturated reactants to di-unsaturated products. Another aspect of the invention involves production of the mono-unsaturated reactants. In particular, the invention provides a route to sorbic acid, for example by dehydrogenation of hexenoic acids or esters thereof.
