    Abstract: A process for the synthesis of Ibuprofen, p - isobutyl hydrotropic acid is described based upon the aromatization reaction which takes place when a dialkyl .alpha.-acetyl-.alpha.-[(5-methyl-3-oxo)-hexyl]-.alpha.'-methyl-succinate (II) is heated at temperatures of about 200.degree. with a strong acid, or a salt of a strong acid with an organic base.

The compound having the formula II is selectively prepared from cyclododecanone and di-alkyl succinate.
