Abstract: The present invention provides a novel organic semiconductor material that affords efficient charge transport, under a wider range of conditions, by increasing the temperature stability and expanding the temperature range of the organic semiconductor material. In an organic semiconductor material comprising a liquid crystalline compound having substituents on the periphery of a rigid plate-like central structure, the substituents have a fluorinated phenylene group, and columns in which the molecules of the compound are accumulated in a stack are aligned hexagonally.

  • Patent number: 6770775
Abstract: A method of synthesizing highly optically enriched &agr;-halo-esters comprises reacting acid halides with a cinchona alkaloid catalyst and a base to form intermediate ketenes. The ketenes are reacted with electrophilic halogenating reagents to produce &agr;-halo-esters with high enantiomeric excess. The base can be an inorganic salt. The thus-formed &agr;-halo-esters have utility in synthesizing other optically-pure materials.

  • Patent number: 6759101
Abstract: Compounds that are useful as components in liquid crystal compositions, particularly in ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions. Compounds of the invention are rod-like molecules with a mesogenic (generally linear) core to which an alkene tail and an alkyl or alkoxy tail with a perfluoroalkyl terminal portion are bonded. Compounds of the invention can contain a variety of one, two or three ring cores, wherein the rings maybe aromatic or alicyclic. Alkenes of the invention are useful as components to improve LC properties of mixtures, for example, to lower melting point of lower freezing point, of LC compositions.
