Abstract: A method for preparation of secondary alcohol mixtures by selective reaction of an olefin or olefin mixture and a carboxylic acid compound in the presence of a particular type of shape selective zeolite catalyst. The reaction selectively produces .alpha.-methylalkyl carboxylate enriched ester product which, upon subsequent hydrolysis, yields the desired 2-alcohol enriched secondary alcohol product.

Abstract: Described is a novel process for producing quaternary ammonium compounds containing halohydrin functionality from tertiary amines without the use of epihalohydrin as the quaternization agent. The process of this invention comprises reacting an amino compound containing at least one tertiary amine group with an allyl halide to quaternize the amine and then reacting the quaternized product with hypohalous acid to convert the allyl substituents to halohydrin moieties.

Abstract: A process for quaternization of tertiary amines in a reaction medium comprising a water soluble or water dispersible organic compound of MWt>240 which is liquid at the quaternization reaction temperature, one of the quaternization reactants having a BPt<200.degree. C. and being volatile relative to the other reactants, to permit its removal after the completion of quaternization to leave a product comprising an intimate mixture of a cationic surfactant and the reaction medium in a weight ratio of 2:1 to 1:50. Preferably the reaction medium is an ethoxylated nonionic surfactant.
