A periodical profile is applied on the outer section of the surface of the layer-forming wires and is made in the form of inclined protrusions above the generatrix of the crimped surface of the cable. The sections of the surface of the layer-forming wires in contact with other wires are made in the form of spirally-arranged planar flats. The cable is secured at the base of the structure and is attached upon each casting cycle between the previously-formed portion of the structure and a distribution matrix. Each strand includes a center wire spirally surrounded by a plurality of inner wires that are spirally surrounded by a plurality of outer wires so that the outer wires completely encompass the inner wires. The center wire and the inner wires are made from a galvanized material and coated with a lubricant. The outer wires are made from a non-coated steel material. Each strand is compacted so the outer wires create a tight mechanical seal to protect the inner wires. The blackened finish on the wire rope is due to a black oxide coating treatment and provides for low visibility of the wire rope during theatrical performances.

For the prevention of snagging of the filaments on the packages, each barrel includes a respective filament guard (35) adjacent to or against which respective packages (50) are disposed. Each package (50) includes a respective filament tensioner (40) mounted to carriage (30) for tensioning a respective filament (52). As tensioners (40) are generally parallel to the axis of rotation of carriage (30), loosening or tightening of tensioner (40) during rotation of carriage (30) is avoided, whereby filaments (52) are firmly wrapped about a cable component at a controlled tension and an optimal speed.

    Abstract: A production unit for twisted cable is disclosed that facilitates the supply and removal of fixed length cables, thereby contributing to improved workability and automation compatibility. A plurality of pairs of relatively rotatable opposed cable clamps are provided with one cable clamp of each pair provided at one end of the fixed length cables and the other of each pair of cable clamps provided at the other end. Each pair of clamps is intermittently moved forward in a direction transverse to the opposed direction in which the cables extend. Each pair of cable clamps sequentially circulate, and the supply and removal operation of fixed length cables to and from the pairs of clamps are conducted respectively at predetermined positions by stations provided in the circulating route, by which it becomes possible to carry out the supply and removal of fixed length cables to continuously repeat the twisting operation.

Alternatively, the shaped wires may be arcuately shaped elliptical wires subtending an angle determined by dividing 360.degree. by the number of shaped wires (for example, 30.degree. for a twelve wire layer) and having an aspect ratio (ratio of major axis X dimension to minor axis Y dimension) sufficient to provide support between the inner core and outer layer of round wires.

In the preferred vertical rotating axis configuration, the tubes are pulled off the spools by an overhead capstan, and the finished bundle is deposited on a take-up reel. A preferred way of indexing the spools uses chains passing around equal size sprockets attached to the vertical support shafts with at least one of the chains passing around a stationary central sprocket.
