    Abstract: An eye drop dispensing device includes a trough member with a space to receive a cartridge housing enclosing a collapsible bag containing an ophthalmic liquid and comprising a spring finger applying pressure to the bag. The bag includes a wall pierced by a needle coupling the liquid to pump means through a one-way valve. The pump means includes a plunger biased to a resting position establishing a dosage chamber. Actuator means moves the plunger to enlarge the dosage chamber, causing a drop in pressure which draws a predetermined quantity of the liquid through the one-way valve into the dosage chamber. The actuator means then releases the plunger so that it moves to compress the dosage chamber to pump the liquid in the dosage chamber through a second one-way valve to spray the liquid through pinholes formed in a nozzle angled to direct the liquid as eye drops to the user's eye.

    Abstract: An eye drop applicator which has an adjustable guide arm. The guide arm defines a semi-rigid member attached to an eye drop container. The guide arm serves as a point of tactile reference to the user who seeks to dispense liquid eye medicament.     Abstract: An eyelid retractor, in combination with a medication container, is used to administer medication to an eye of a user. The eyelid retractor may be disposable, and includes an upper portion and a lower portion. The upper portion has an opening, such as a circular and/or flanged aperture, in which a nozzle of a medication container is mounted. The lower portion is connected to the upper portion to move a portion of the cheek of the user. The movement of the cheek retracts the lower eyelid of the user from the sclera of the eye to receive the medication from the nozzle. The retraction the lower eyelid from the sclera of the eye using the eyelid retractor improves the ability and accuracy in self-administering eye drops. The retractor poses less danger from pressure and/or protruding elements near the eye, and retracts the eyelid from the sclera to apply eye drops directly to the sclera with one hand.

    Abstract: A method and instrument for thermal phacoemulsification includes, in one aspect, a process for introducing high temperature water into the lens capsule of the eye for emulsification purposes. The invention provides a mechanism for heating water to the desired temperature at the point of delivery, whereby the cannula that enters the eye is maintained at a temperature sufficiently low to avoid thermal damage to surrounding eye tissue. The invention provides an isenthalpic device for delivering heated water to the lens capsule for phacoemulsification. The device includes a intraocular cannula for delivering high pressure water, and a throttling mechanism at the point of delivery for converting the energy in the water stream from pressure to heat. The throttling mechanism may comprise a capillary passage, or a porous plug, or a micro-orifice which directs the fluid stream to strike a target in the cannula bore, after which the fluid is discharged from the cannula.
