Abstract: A free-wheeling lever handle controller for operating a mortise lock provides free-wheeling functionality while maintaining the full operational characteristics of various mortise lock functions. A lock mode receiving mechanism connectable to the lock output is used to detect the unlocked and locked conditions of the mortise lock, and correspondingly engage and disengage the free-wheeling mechanism. The free-wheeling mechanism has a split shaft connected between a handle on the controller and a handle input on the mortise lock. The two halves of the shaft may be coupled and uncoupled via a shaft lock movable perpendicular between locked and unlocked positions. In the unlocked position the shaft lock connects the two halves of the shaft to rotate together when the handle is turned. In the locked position the shaft lock disengages the two halves of the shaft to rotate separately and allow the handle to free-wheel with operating the door latch.

A key-controlled disconnect linkage is provided for selectively connecting and disconnecting the handle and the bolt. The disconnect linkage includes a disconnect member which is moved by a key-operated locking member between connecting and disconnecting positions located, respectively, in and out of the path of travel of a handle operating arm. When the disconnect linkage drivingly connects the handle and the bolt, movement of the handle from its nested position to an operating position will cause corresponding unlatching movement of the bolt.

Abstract: A door lock has a flush-mountable body. A forwardly facing recess is defined by the body. A paddle-type handle is pivotally carried by the body and is movable between a nested position within the body recess and an operating position. A spring-projected slide bolt is carried on the back of the body and is movable between projected and retracted positions. A key-controlled disconnect linkage is provided for selectively connecting and disconnecting the handle and the bolt. The linkage includes a disconnect member which is movably mounted on the bolt. The disconnect member is moved by a key-operated cam between connecting and disconnecting positions. When the disconnect linkage drivingly connects the handle and the bolt, movement of the handle from its nested position to an operating position will cause corresponding retracting movement of the bolt. When the disconnect linkage disconnects the handle from the bolt, movement of the handle is inoperative to cause retracting movement of the bolt.

  • Patent number: 4290282
Abstract: A deadbolt lock mechanism of the single cylinder type is disclosed having a latch bolt which is movable between extended and retracted positions by means of a lock cylinder at one side thereof. A thumbturn, together with manually movable coupling control means for controlling the coupling between the thumbturn and latch bolt are located at the other side of the mechanism. In the bolt retracted position, the coupling control means is movable between coupling enabling and disabling positions to condition the coupling for operation of the latch bolt by the thumbturn in the enabling position thereof, and for disabling such latch bolt operation by the thumbturn in the disabling position. Consequently, the latch bolt is operable by the lock cylinder in any position of the thumbturn and coupling control means, whereas the thumbturn is enabled for operation of the latch bolt only when the coupling control means has been moved into enabling position.

  • Patent number: 4148092
Abstract: The electronic combination door lock uses a push button keyboard in combination with a door provided with a dead bolt manually operable by an outer turning knob. The electronic circuitry for the keyboard compares an input code with a stored code and generates an enabling signal only if the input code is the same as the stored code. The outer turning knob is restrained from being manually moved to retract the dead bolt when the door is in its locked condition. This restraining of the outer knob is removed by the enabling signal which requires very little energy so that the dead bolt can then be manually retracted. Since the major portion of the work involved in unlocking the door is a manual operation, very little electrical energy is required for the keyboard and circuitry and a battery can thus be used to thereby eliminate complicated wiring to exterior power sources.

  • Patent number: 4108482
Abstract: A disengaging spindle locking mechanism for the latch bolt of a mortise type lock is actuated by the locking slide which is normally employed to engage a retractor hub to prevent the hub from being rotated. At the inner end of a split spindle where it is in non-rotatable engagement with the retractor hub there is a cam surface. On the inner end of a locking slide is a cam surface which cams the spindle out of engagement with the hub as hub action is blocked by the slide. Thereafter, should force be applied to the spindle, it will merely spin in place and no damage will be done to the lock mechanism such as might otherwise be done by unauthorized persons to force open the lock.

  • Patent number: 4047408
Abstract: A single cylinder deadbolt lock with a thumbturn includes a slidable pair of gear elements normally engaging the thumbturn with the cylinder whereby either one will operate the bolt. One such gear element is provided on a hub rotatable with the locking bar shaft, while the other gear element comprises part of the thumbturn mechanism. A rotatable sleeve coaxial with the locking bar shaft is also normally disposed in meshing engagement with the aforementioned hub but is restrained from axial movement. Axial movement together with rotation of the lock cylinder, e.g., for locking the mechanism, moves the hub and the sleeve out of meshing engagement, causing the hub and thumbturn to be held out of meshing engagement for disabling the thumbturn until the cylinder is again rotated.

  • Patent number: 4038846
Abstract: This electronic combination lock is operated by depressing the proper combination of pushbuttons mounted on the faceplate of a circular handle, then rotating the handle to open the bolt. The pushbuttons are held outwardly by radially extending spring wires within the handle that also provide electrical connection, when a pushbutton is depressed, to inclined contacts mounted to the rear of the faceplate. Electrical leads extend through a hollow shaft connected to the handle. The bolt is restrained in the locked position by a magnetically actuated locking pin which projects into a bore in the bolt. The shaft is connected to the bolt by a spring. When the proper pushbuttons are selected, electrical circuitry disclosed herein actuates the magnet, removing the pin and permitting the bolt to be opened by handle rotation. If the wrong combination is depressed, an alarm signal is produced, the magnet is not actuated, and rotation of the handle expands the spring without moving the bolt.
