    Patent number: 4895036
Abstract: A key for use with a lock having internally lugged tumblers comprises an elongate cylindrical member with a longitudinal keyway to receive the lugs. From the longitudinal keyway extend a plurality of circumferential grooves of coded lengths. From the ends of certain of these circumferential grooves extend second, axial grooves which extend back toward the handle of the key. These axial grooves permit the key to be pushed inwardly into the lock after the key has been fully turned. One of the circumferential grooves does not include an axial segment extending from the end thereof. This groove engages a member in the lock which is caused to move when the key is pushed inwardly after rotation. The movement of this lock member activates a printing mechanism inside the lock.

  • Patent number: 4850210
Abstract: A lock which is rekeyable or programmable to operate with a different key from the exterior thereof without disassembling it or removing it from a lock assembly in which it is assembled is disclosed. The lock is rekeyed by a change key through the keyway so that the lock appears from the exterior thereof to be a conventional lock. The change key which can not operate the lock adjusts a movable shear line formed by what is in effect an externally adjustable tumbler. The lock includes a plurality of pin tumbler sets and a plurality of cylinders disposed one in the other in the lock casing. The pin tumbler sets and the cylinders cooperate to from a plurality of common pin tumbler shear lines, i.e., shear lines formed by a number of individual shear lines of individual pin tumbler sets. In a given position of the adjustable shear line, only one of the keys will position the pin tumblers to form the proper common pin tumbler shear which is aligned with the adjustable shear line to operate the lock.

  • Patent number: 4747281
Abstract: A lock apparatus includes a key-in-knob lock, padlock or other type of 90.degree. lock provided with a cylindrical plug having a keyway for receiving a master key that has bittings for positioning a master pin in the top portion of a first pinway with the bottom of the master pin aligned with the shear interface to unlock the lock. The plug has a guideway at the surface thereof and angularly displaced from the keyway less than 180.degree. for receiving the master pin during re-keying. A blocking rod is received in the guideway for normal, non-re-keying use of the lock. After removal of the rod from the guideway, a transfer tool is slidable into the guideway. The tool has a cut for receiving the master pin from the first pinway. The tool slides relative to the guideway and moves the master pin in the guideway to directly reposition the master pin adjacent a randomly selected second pinway.

  • Patent number: 4712402
Abstract: A lock is re-keyable for sequential use with different ones of a set of change keys, without disassembling the lock or removing or replacing any parts therefrom or therein. A housing of the lock has a bore extending axially therethrough to define a shear interface and receive a plug for rotational and axial movement, with one rearward axial position for operation of the lock and another forward axial position for re-keying. The plug is held fixed rearwardly by a retainer to form pinways. According to which change key currently operates the lock, a particular reset key selectively positions at least one master pin in either the plug portion or the housing portion of the second pinway. The reset key releases the retainer and the plug is moved forward axially to align a third pinway with the master pin in the housing portion or a first pinway with the master pin in the plug portion. • Patent number: 4712398
Abstract: An electronic locking system including a lock cylinder having an electronically actuable release assembly which is selectively enabled to disengage a pin from a cylinder plug, to permit the rotation of the plug by an inserted key. The lock cylinder and key each contain non-volatile, electronically alterable memory devices, such as EEPROM integrated circuits, which house keying system codes. The key EEPROM is preferably housed within the key blade, in a key design which closely resembles a traditional mechanical key without the usual bitting. The release mechanism incorporates a locking pin which is moveable between plug-engaging and non-engaging positions, along a radius of the lock cylinder. The release mechanism may include a primary actuator which directly moves the locking pin, or may act indirectly upon the locking pin via a latching member.

  • Patent number: 4620429
Abstract: A cycle lock having at least one plurality of disc-like tumblers loosely mounted on a shaft parallel with the axis of rotation of the key rotated lock cylinder. Each tumbler has a two spaced lobes which, in the neutral state of the tumbler, contact the arcuate surface of the cylinder but one of the lobes may drop into the key slot in the cylinder if not occupied by a high segment on the key. A key is initially inserted into the lock at a special location at which all tumblers are in their neutral state, and the rotation of the key to its normal position of insertion and removal will set the lock tumblers according to the key coding. In one embodiment particularly useful for hotels, etc., two sets of tumblers are employed: one set for transient or guest keys, a second set for service personnel keys, and a third key, a grand master key, operates the second tumbler set and can reset both sets of tumblers for accepting new keys with different codings thereon.

  • Patent number: 4616492
Abstract: The combination lock is one wherein movable members of the combination mechanism are set in decoding position by a key in the form of a rotatable shaft with a head at one end serving as a handle. Rotation of the key to proper decoding position is determined by shifting an index mark on the key relative to selected units of a set of letters or numerals on the lock housing. The combination mechanism makes use of a multiple number of pairs of discs concealed in the housing which must be successively set in proper decoding position, one disc relative to the other, to release a lock operating plug. In proper decoding position a slide bar, which normally blocks rotation of the lock operating plug, is shifted by key action into openings provided in the discs and out of blocking engagement with the plug, in which position the plug is free for rotation by the key.

  • Patent number: 3961507
Abstract: A resettable axial pin tumbler lock having a spindle rotatably mounted in a barrel with the spindle and barrel forming a "lock" radial interface and a plurality of cooperating axial wells for receiving axial pins. A plurality of driver pins are disposed in the wells in the barrel and spring biased across the "lock" interface into the wells of the spindle to lock the spindle against rotation in the barrel. A reset ring is rotatably mounted in the barrel with the reset ring and the spindle forming a "reset" radial interface and a plurality of cooperating axial wells for receiving axial pins. A plurality of reset pins are disposed in the wells in the spindle and reset ring in axial alignment and engagement with the driver pins so that the spring bias on the driver pins also applies a biasing force to the reset pins.

  • Patent number: 3938359
Abstract: A cylindrical lock assembly is provided which is approximately the same size as present-day cylindrical "Mortise" locks, and which can replace present-day locks in the doors of hotels, motels, or other establishments, merely by removing the existing lock cylinders and replacing them by the lock cylinders of the invention. The lock assembly of the invention has a number of internal logic ring members which are mounted tandem to one another in coaxial relationship with the central axis of the lock, and which are replaceable to change the key pattern to which the lock will respond. The lock also includes a plurality of spring-biased tumblers, which are moved longitudinally to mating positions with respect to the various logic ring members when the proper keys are inserted in the lock.
