    Abstract: A lock and key mechanism reduces exposure to lock picking by including an extension into a key slot to receive and conceal tapered end portions of key pins. The only portions of key pins exposed in a key slot are cylindrical portions that are difficult to move from a resting position. A key includes a beveled leading edge and a spring-loaded pin activation element at the leading edge of the key. As the key is inserted into the key slot, the spring-loaded pin activation element is compressed to permit entry into the key slot. As the pin activation element reaches a pin, an aperture in the extension allows the spring-loaded pin activation element to move toward the key pin and move the key pin from its resting position. In this activated position, the tapered end portion of the key pin is exposed for further activation by the beveled leading edge of the key. The process is repeated until the pin activation element engages and activates each successive key pin and allows full insertion of the key.

The free end of the chain is attached to the U-shaped shackle of an adjustable shackle lock assembly. The chain wraps around the steering column, and the shackle legs are inserted through one or a pair of holes in the outside bracket portion and locked snugly in place in the lock housing, which bears against the opposite side of the bracket or is attached thereto. The L-portion of the bracket is disposed inside the cover and extends forward under the ignition lock, to prevent the cover from being rotated.

The bittings serve to engage transverse rows of axially reciprocatable tumblers in a cylinder lock, and the grooves receive lock wards therein, while the distal end of the blade engages the lock to determine the depth of insertion of the key blade. The blade also is provided with a capture pin opening, and with a proximal end structure which cooperates with the handle in assembling the key. The blade is made from a length of bar stock which is rolled in order to form lands and grooves on the sides of a flat strip.

    Abstract: A cylinder lock with key, incorporating a picking preventing means, comprises a plug mounted rotatably within the cylindrical seat of a lock cylinder and has a first set of holes lying on a radial plane. A longitudinal key slot extends through the plug which is in communication with the first set of holes and has a longitudinal rib arranged to project thereinto to provide support for the pins. The rib conceals the ends of the pins resting thereon, and defines an intersection of the longitudinal key slot with the cylindrical portions of said first set of holes accommodating said pins. One of the pins has the same length as the hole accommodating it, thereby if deceitfully shifted, it will unavoidably engage the hole of the respective tumbler pin and produce a locked condition of the lock.
