Abstract: Certain embodiments relate to systems and methods for monitoring and improving the efficiency by which systems maintain building environments. A building management system may analyze values observed by sensors and other devices and determine whether the observed values fall within a range. If the observed values do not fall within the range and the building's control system has not taken appropriate action to ensure that the observed values do fall within the range, the building may generate a floor plan specifying where the failure occurred. A building ranking system may rank a plurality of buildings based upon their relative efficiency. The building ranking system may determine each building's efficiency based on a set of parameters related to the building's energy usage that are normalized for weather, occupancy, and other external parameters.

  • Patent number: 8504175
Abstract: A method and system of predictive model control of a controlled system with one or more physical components using a model predictive control (MPC) model, determining an iterative, finite horizon optimization of a system model of the controlled system, in order to generate a manipulated value trajectory as part of a control process. At time t sampling a current state of the controlled system a cost function minimizing manipulated variables trajectories is computed with the MPC model for a relatively short time horizon in the future, wherein the MPC uses a quadratic programming (QP) algorithm to find the optimal solution, and wherein the QP algorithm is solved using an Active Sets solver (AS) class algorithm with simple constraints based on gradient projection and using Newton step projection. A move of the manipulated value trajectory is implemented and the control process is moved forward by continuing to shift the prediction horizon forward.

Abstract: An improved process and corresponding controller provide a model predictive control approach that can be implemented with less computational resources and/or with greater speed than conventional MPC, while at the same time retaining all or a substantial portion of the robustness and advantages of conventional MPC. According to one aspect of the invention, the process provides an improved initial estimate of the MPC model trajectory to reduce the number of iterations to find the optimal one. The improved trajectory is obtained by applying a correction to the computed MPC manipulated value trajectory, and using the corrected manipulated value trajectory as the starting point for the next iteration of MPC manipulated value trajectory computation. As set forth in more detail below, the correction is determined from the LQR feedback control strategy.

Abstract: One or more techniques are provided for the sharing of variable trajectories between multiple controllers in a control system. In general, the present technique is based upon the sharing of predicted desired variable trajectories between multiple controllers requiring a common input variable. In one embodiment, a common input variable is shared between two controllers, wherein one controller is tuned to have dominant control with regard to the shared variable. Each controller determines and communicates their own desired trajectory for the shared variable to the other controller and in doing so, the constraints associated with each controller are shared and honored by the other controller. Based on the communicated trajectories, the dominant controller may exercise control over the shared variable, thus improving overall process control.

Abstract: A closed-loop control device for a process, in which a dead band element is connected upstream of a linear dynamic controller to reduce actuating interventions in the steady control state. If a control deviation (e) of the control loop exceeds a first threshold value (s1), then the dead band element is automatically deactivated, where a control deviation (e1) passed via the dead band element is uninfluenced by a set dead band in the inactive state. If the control deviation (e) then undershoots a second threshold value that is less than the first threshold value, then the dead band element is automatically re-activated. This reduces the energy consumption and wear of an actuator and improves the control behavior with regard to steady-state accuracy and the control behavior of the control loop.

Abstract: Operating status transitions of production plants according to the PROFIEnergy standard are increasingly provided for the energy management of an individual component within a plant. The definition of an operating status change for an individual component leaves unsolved the problem as to how an operating status change of a plant having multiple components is to be effected. Thus, methods and systems that support an automatic operating status change of a plant consisting of a multiplicity of components are provided herein.

Abstract: The invention relates to the automatic rendering of a lighting scene with a lighting system, particularly the control of the rendering. A basic idea of the invention is to improve rendering of a lighting scene by automatically compensating interference, such as an alien light source or a dynamic perturbing event of a rendered lighting scene. An embodiment of the invention provides a light control system (10) for automatically rendering a lighting scene with a lighting system, wherein the light control (10) system is adapted for monitoring the rendered lighting scene for the occurrence of interference (14, 20, 22, 24) and automatically reconfiguring the lighting system such that a monitored occurrence of an interference is compensated (16, 18, 12). As result, the invention allows to prevent dynamic disturbances or unforeseen events, for example caused by faulty or alien light sources, from distorting the rendering of an intended lighting scene.

The apparatus includes a conveying device, a product stream imager, an inspection engine, a routing engine, and an object diverting station. In operation, the inspection engine and routing engine cooperate in a manner so that objects classified as defective are intentionally passed to the output product stream when their inclusion maintains the quality level of the first output product stream at a level that is better than or equal to the target quality level.
