Abstract: A method for estimating grid properties of a power grid coupled to a generator at a point of common coupling is provided. First, a voltage VPCC at the point of common coupling is measured. Second, a current IPCC at the point of common coupling is measured. Third, the grid properties are estimated by a grid model using as input parameters the measured voltage VPCC at the point of common coupling, the measured current IPCC at the point of common coupling and the determined phase angle. Advantageously, the absolute phases of the voltage and the current at the point of common coupling are not necessary, which makes the present method less prone to errors due to measurement noise. Further, a device and a computer program product are provided.

Abstract: A system and method of the invention adjusts an existing system model of a PV system to provide better information regarding projected performance of the PV system. The resulting model enables a user to more accurately compare actual versus expected performance, thereby quantifying performance degradation due to soiling, aging and component failures while also verifying the design assumptions. A method of the invention includes selecting days of historical data that will result in the highest quality results (e.g., high energy output, minimal clouds); determining key metrics and relationships between measured data and site characteristics to identify how to optimize model parameters; running simulations of the model over the key days to determine the best value for each model parameter that results in the closest match between the model and measured system output; and conducting iterations of the simulations to adjust various model parameters.

  • Patent number: 8868395
Abstract: In a fast simulation technique, the output node of a power supply module of the integrated circuit can be designated as an ideal power node. At this point, the power supply module can be designated a fan-in block and any blocks connected to the power node can be designated fan-out blocks. Then, DC initialization and transient simulation for each time step can be performed for the circuit. During the transient simulation, any inter-relationship of the fan-out blocks can be determined and a sensitivity model can be calculated for each fan-out block. Because the power node is designated as an ideal power node, the results of the sensitivity model for each fan-out block can be added asynchronously to a total loadings of the power node. The total loadings can be loaded into a matrix, which is computed for the fan-in block, and a simulation waveform point can be output.

  • Patent number: 8860248
Abstract: A demand response unit (DRU) interposed between a utility's electrical power line (PL) and at least one load (L1-Ln) to which power is supplied by the utility over the line. A detector (Fdet or Vdet) measures a characteristic (frequency F, voltage V) of an electrical waveform (W) by which power is transmitted by the utility to the load. The detector determines both when the measured frequency or voltage exceeds a predetermined threshold for a first predetermined period of time; and, if the threshold is exceeded, when the frequency or voltage exceeds the second predetermined threshold for a second predetermined period of time. For this purpose, the detector processes a predetermined number of intervals of the waveform and produces an average value of the characteristic which is compared to the threshold. This is done to reduce the effect of extraneous events which may temporarily change the value of the frequency or voltage.

The phase multiplexer connects each motor phase to each of a positive and a negative input of the comparator, with a switch in each connection to form a switch array. A microprocessor is disposed to operate the switches, and is configured to measure a BEMF for a first phase by opening the switches connecting all other phases to the positive input of the comparator and by opening the switch connecting the first phase being measured to the negative input of said comparator. The comparators output is received by a shift register. The microprocessor is configured to respond to a zero crossing when a majority of bits in the shift register change between high and low.

  • Patent number: 8793292
Abstract: A system and computer-implemented method for tracking and displaying computer files used in computer simulations of engineered or industrial process plants. The system includes a computer processor, computer readable medium, and control logic stored on the computer readable medium and executed by the processor. The processor is operative to run the computer simulation of the plant and automatically compiles a list of all files used and/or created during the simulation. In one embodiment, the list includes information about the location/path of each file on the system and its associated software program required to open and view the file contents. The list may further be displayed to a system user and allows the selection of one or more files to be viewed. The processor retrieves, opens, and displays the selected files from the system to the user.

Abstract: Operational specifications of a photovoltaic plant configuration can be inferred through evaluation of historical measured system production data and measured solar resource data. Based upon the location of the photovoltaic plant, a time-series power generation data set is simulated based on a normalized and preferably substantially linearly-scalable solar power simulation model. The simulation is run for a range of hypothetical photovoltaic system configurations. The simulation can be done probabilistically. A power rating is derived for each system configuration by comparison of the measured versus simulated production data, which is applied to scale up the simulated time-series data. The simulated energy production is statistically compared to actual historical data, and the system configuration reflecting the lowest overall error is identified as the inferred (and optimal) system configuration.

  • Patent number: 8781809
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for collecting and aggregating a plurality of power flow measurements from a plurality of devices in a power management system. The error bounds of the aggregated power flow measurement are then determined using at least one error model. Systems and methods are also provided for inferring AC power flows from DC power flows. A device having at least one DC power flow sensor is augmented with at least one AC power flow sensor AC and DC power flows through the device are measured using the sensors over a range of operating points. An inference model of AC power flow in the device as a function of DC power flow is then built, wherein the error of the model is bounded. DC power flow through the device and in similar devices can then be then measured and used to infer AC power flow for the device.

  • Patent number: 8774948
Abstract: There is a method to model large electric power consuming facilities for power system studies. A general facility model, for example a template, is created for different types of industrial or commercial facilities. A template includes all necessary and general electric system information such as the common electric network configuration of a specific type of facilities. The template, stored in a database, is then scaled and adjusted based on the power demand level of the case-specific facility to be modeled based on facility specific parameters acquired for the facility. The result is a full, case-specific model of the facility to be modeled. The case-specific model is simplified into an equivalent model with varying details according to a user's specification. The results are the case-specific facility model of interest to the user. The model is normally included into the power system model of the utility network for power system simulation studies.

  • Patent number: 8768679
Abstract: A computer-implemented method that simulates NPskew effects on a combination NFET (Negative Field Effect Transistor)/PFET (Positive Field Effect Transistor) semiconductor device using slew perturbations includes performing a timing test by a computing device, by: (1) evaluating perturb slews in Strong N/Weak P directions on the combination semiconductor device for a timing test result; (2) evaluation perturb slews in Weak N/Strong P directions on the combination semiconductor device for a timing test result; and (3) evaluating unperturbed slews in a balanced condition on the combination semiconductor device for a timing test result. After each test is performed, a determination is made as to which evaluation of the perturbed and unperturbed slews produces a most conservative timing test result for the combination semiconductor device. An NPskew effect adjusted timing test result is finally output based on determining the most conservative timing test result.
