Abstract: An increase in information available to a user of computing technologies has a tendency to increase the number of topics that are similarly related. Given the large amount of information that is now available, it is increasingly likely that a first set of search results generated in response to an initial search query will contain information that is not of interest to the user. What is needed in the art is a technique to enable a search query to be conducted by taking advantage of linguistic feedback. Furthermore, what is needed is a technique to enable the presentation of search results to be refined in a manner based on what is not of interest to a user, either intrinsically or because the user has already seen and evaluated certain information and next wants to see more or different information.

One embodiment includes identifying at least one category relevant to the search query, wherein a plurality of scored keywords are associated with each category, selecting at least one of the scored keywords that is relevant to an identified category, performing a plurality of searches of messages from a social networking messaging service to retrieve messages, where at least one search includes retrieving messages based on the original search query and one of the selected scored keywords, scoring the retrieved messages with respect to each of the at least one identified categories using at least the scored keywords relevant to each category, and returning at least the message with the highest score as the search result.

Abstract: One or more techniques and/or systems are disclosed that provide for document retrieval where a user can identify key attributes of potential target documents that are desirable (e.g., have a particular semantic content for the user). Further, relevant documents that comprise the desired semantic content can be retrieved. Additionally, the user can provide feedback on the retrieved documents, for example, based on key semantic concepts found in the documents, and the input can be used to update the classification. For example, this process can be iterated to improve the retrieval and precision of documents found through machine learning techniques.

Abstract: Methods, systems and apparatus, including computer program products are described for ranking content items identified by a search engine and delivering corresponding search results. In one aspect, search engine user language preference data is stored in association with user content item selection records. Analysis of the records is performed to identify content items that appeal to users having common language preferences. Abstract: Various embodiments of systems and methods for dynamic visualization of search results on a GUI are described herein. A search query received by a user is divided into a plurality of search parts. One or more search results for each of the plurality of search parts are retrieved. Further, a search result array is generated from the retrieved search results. Furthermore, Venn diagram graphical representation of the search results in the search result array is determined and the same is displayed on the GUI. The categories of magazine edition profiles are compared to categories of a profile of a user, wherein the user profile is based on categories of articles viewed by the user. A magazine edition recommendation based on the comparing is provided for display to the user. The edition recommendation may be a link or section of shown in a view of magazine edition content on a mobile device of the user. A user may be provided a convenient way to subscribe to the recommended magazine edition. A personalized magazine edition recommendation of highest ranked articles may also be provided.

The server includes a database and a search engine. The client includes a web-based visual rule building application including selectable windows for displaying and visually editing terms, logical operators, logical rules for storage in the database. The logical rules are generated by visually selecting at least one of the terms and logical operators from the windows. The server may further include a search engine configured to perform at least one of a direct search or a contextual search for an entered query string in records stored in the database and the client may include a visual interface for displaying results of the searches. Abstract: A method is presented for merging document metadata at a client computer. A document obtained from a server computer is opened by a user at the client computer. If the document does not include paragraph identifiers, a paragraph identifier is assigned to each paragraph in the document. When the document is opened by a second user at a second client computer, metadata for the document is received from the server computer. A determination is made whether to merge the metadata received from the server computer with current metadata for the document. When it is determined that the current metadata and the metadata received from the server computer should be merged, paragraph identifiers are adjusted in the document based on the metadata received from the server computer.

Abstract: This invention relates to determining page elements to display in response to a search. A method embodiment of this invention determines a page element based on a search result. The method includes: (1) determining a set of result classifications based on the search result, wherein each result classification includes a result category and a result score; and (2) determining the page element based on the set of result classifications. In this way, a classification is determined based on a search result and page elements are generated based on the classification. By using the search result, as opposed to just the query, page elements are generated that corresponds to a predominant interpretation of the user's query within the search results. As result, the page elements may, in most cases, accurately reflect the user's intent.

In one embodiment, the string search is a multi-stage search where the stages of the search are performed by different hardware components. In one embodiment in a first search stage, a first processor performs a comparison of blocks of incoming data to determine whether the blocks potentially represent the beginning of one of the predetermined strings. If a potential predetermined string is identified, a second processor performs a further search to determine whether the string matches one of the predetermined strings. Because the first processor searches only for the beginning of the predetermined strings, the first stage comparison can be performed quickly, which improves network performance as compared to more detailed searching. The second stage is performed by second processor, which allows the first processor to search for potential matching strings.

An aggregation service may monitor many data feeds, perform an automated topical evaluation of the data items, and generate a set of topical data feeds. Additional services may also be applied, such as filtering the topical data feeds by various criteria, translating data items from a native language into another language, and removing equivalent data items, such as articles redundantly covering the same news story. A centralized or cooperatively distributed service may scale for improved efficiency and value, since each data feed may be monitored and each data item received and evaluated on behalf of many users.

Abstract: Two methods for measuring keyword-document relevance are described. The methods receive a keyword and a document as input and output a probability value for the keyword. The first method is a similarity-based approach which uses techniques for measuring similarity between two short-text segments to measure relevance between the keyword and the document.
