  • Patent number: 8751645
Abstract: A lattice of interconnected concepts is constructed from flow entries. Each concept describes a subset of flows and a subset of the flow attributes. Based on user queries, the lattice is used to build disjoint sets of flows referred to as flowsets. Each user query specifies one or more of the flow attributes to be measured. Each flowset includes one or more of the flows to thereby enable sharing of the hardware counters among the flows. One hardware counter is then assigned to each flowset.

  • Patent number: 8743731
Abstract: Techniques are provided for performing discovery in a Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) network. An FCF discovers other FCoE Forwarders (FCFs) connected to its network segment by transmitting a solicitation message to the multicast MAC address “All-FCF-MACs”. All FCFs receive packets with this multicast MAC address including the solicitation message that announces the presence of the FCF. Each FCF replies with a unicast advertisement message that provides the new FCF with a MAC address of the responding FCF. The FCF builds a list of the FCFs available on its network segment and may then establish a virtual link with one or more of the FCFs through an exchange link parameter (ELP) exchange.

Abstract: A method for controlling advertising of routing data to neighbor routers is presented. A list of prefixes is maintained (301) and each prefix is associated (302) with an own indicator vector that contains a data item for each of the neighbor routers so that the data item indicates (304) whether the prefix concerned is to be advertised to the neighbor router concerned. For each neighbor router there is (303) a handling pointer pointing to the prefix that is relevant to the status of an advertising process related to this neighbor router, and the handling pointer is moved forward on the list of prefixes according as the prefixes are advertised to this neighbor router. As there is no need to maintain an own list of prefixes for each neighbor router separately, but only neighbor router-specific entries in the indicator vectors, savings can be achieved in the required memory space.

  • Patent number: 8667177
Abstract: An example network device includes a set of interfaces, a control unit, and a forwarding engine. The control unit includes an interface group information repository that stores data defining interface groups. Each interface group includes one or more interfaces. The forwarding engine includes a media access control (MAC) address repository that stores a mapping of a first interface to a source MAC address, and a MAC address management module that determines whether an interface group to which the first interface is assigned is the same interface group as the interface group to which a second interface is assigned. The control unit is configured to receive a layer two (L2) communication via the second interface, wherein the L2 communication includes the source MAC address. The forwarding engine dynamically updates the MAC address repository based on the determination of the MAC address management module.

  • Patent number: 8667174
Abstract: A system and method for retaining routes in a control plane learned by an inter-domain routing protocol in the event of a connectivity failure between routers. Routers are classified as either route reflectors or originators. A determination is made whether the connectivity failure occurred between a route reflector and an originator, two originators, or two route reflectors. A determination is then made whether to propagate a withdrawal of learned routes based on whether the connectivity failure occurred between a route reflector and an originator, two originators, or two route reflectors. A withdrawal of learned routes is propagated to neighboring routers if the connectivity failure occurred between two originators, or between a route reflector and an originator that is inaccessible via an intra-domain routing protocol.

Abstract: At a migration server separate from a first server, a plurality of incoming internet protocol, IP, packets directed at an IP address associated with an IP service are received. On the basis of one or more source characteristics associated with IP packets in the plurality, it is determined that a first subset of packets in the plurality originated from one or more client devices which have not been migrated to a second server and that a second subset in the plurality originated from one or more client devices which have been migrated to the second server. IP packets determined to be in the first subset are forwarded to a first physical address associated with the first server for processing at the first server. IP packets determined to be in the second subset are processed at the second server.

Abstract: Architecture that facilitates communications between two network nodes of the different networks by providing a routing mechanism that uses alternative modalities driven entirely by policies that are authored and stored in a computing cloud and enforced on the client. This allows the selection of one network path over another path based on criteria such as, physical location of the hosts and service level agreements (SLAs) to be provided, for example. With respect for path selection, a packet can be routed through a datacenter closest to the hosts. With respect to SLAs, there may be different SLAs available to different clients. For clients with the highest bandwidth/uptime or other guarantees, a network path different from other types of clients can be selected. Additionally, connectivity can be allowed or disallowed based on other kinds of policy rules such as a virtual circle to which the hosts may belong.

  • Patent number: 8649382
Abstract: Distribution of content between publishers and consumers is accomplished using an overlay network that may make use of XML language to facilitate content identification. The overlay network includes a plurality of routers that may be in communication with each other and the publishers and consumers on the Internet. Content and queries are identified by content descriptors that are routed from the originator to a nearest router in the overlay network. The nearest router, for each unique content descriptor, generates a hash identification of the content descriptor which is used by remaining routers in the overlay network to provide the appropriate functions with respect to the content descriptor. In particular, this allows all routers in the overlay network except the nearest router to properly route content without processing every content descriptor.
