  • Patent number: 7975080
Abstract: Techniques for providing improved data distribution to and collection from multiple memories are described. Such memories are often associated with and local to processing elements (PEs) within an array processor. Improved data transfer control within a data processing system provides support for radix 2, 4 and 8 fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms through data reordering or bit-reversed addressing across multiple PEs, carried out concurrently with FFT computation on a digital signal processor (DSP) array by a DMA unit. Parallel data distribution and collection through forms of multicast and packet-gather operations are also supported.

  • Patent number: 7970961
Abstract: A distributed direct memory access (DMA) method, apparatus, and system is provided within a system on chip (SOC). DMA controller units are distributed to various functional modules desiring direct memory access. The functional modules interface to a systems bus over which the direct memory access occurs. A global buffer memory, to which the direct memory access is desired, is coupled to the system bus. Bus arbitrators are utilized to arbitrate which functional modules have access to the system bus to perform the direct memory access. Once a functional module is selected by the bus arbitrator to have access to the system bus, it can establish a DMA routine with the global buffer memory.

  • Patent number: 7899957
Abstract: A memory controller, such as a SDRAM controller, controls the way in which data is retrieved, in order to make more efficient use of the bandwidth of the memory data bus. More specifically, when a memory access request requires multiple data bursts on the memory bus, the SDRAM controller stores the data from the multiple data bursts in respective buffers. Data is then retrieved from the buffers such that data is read from a part of the first buffer, then from the other buffers, and finally from the remaining part of the first buffer. Storing the required data in the remaining part of the first buffer avoids the need to occupy the memory bus with a new data burst.

  • Patent number: 7865631
Abstract: A method, system and program are provided for dynamically allocating DMA channel identifiers to multiple DMA transfer requests that are grouped in time by virtualizing DMA transfer requests into an available DMA channel identifier using a channel bitmap listing of available DMA channels to select and set an allocated DMA channel identifier. Once the input values associated with the DMA transfer requests are mapped to the selected DMA channel identifier, the DMA transfers are performed using the selected DMA channel identifier, which is then deallocated in the channel bitmap upon completion of the DMA transfers. When there is a request to wait for completion of the data transfers, the same input values are used with the mapping to wait on the appropriate logical channel. With this method, all available logical channels can be utilized with reduced instances of false-sharing.

  • Patent number: 7689734
Abstract: Disclosed are a method, a system and a computer program product for managing direct memory access (DMA) operations in a double buffering system. During direct memory access operations in a computer system, data is transferred from a source memory location to a destination memory location with minimal use of the computer's processing unit. Double buffering utilizes two separate memory buffers to perform simultaneous DMA operations. Prior to processing a DMA request each buffer in a double buffering system is assigned a channel identification (ID), or tag. When reading, writing, or polling status of data in a buffer, the tag identifies the buffer. A toggle factor is utilized to conveniently switch between each buffer in the double buffering system. Utilizing a toggle factor decreases latencies in DMA operations.

Abstract: A data transfer apparatus includes a processor, a main memory, and a DMAC connected to the main memory via a plurality of buses. The DMAC transfers data to the main memory by bypassing the processor, writes flag data “1” indicating completion of the data transfer processing in a completion status storage area of the main memory, and finally outputs an interrupt signal to the processor. In response to the interrupt signal, an interrupt handler refers to the completion status storage area, and when the flag data is written, reads the data in the main memory and erases the flag data in the completion status storage area.

Abstract: In a portable FireWire compatible device, a direct memory access (DMA) bus switch coupled by way of a DMA bus to a central processing unit (CPU), a local hard drive (HDD), and a FireWire port, provides a direct connection between the FireWire port and the HDD bypassing a main bus and the CPU when a data transfer request is received and processed by the CPU. Otherwise, until the data transfer request is received and processed, the CPU is directly connected to the HDD. In this way, a high speed data transfer between the FireWire port and the HDD is provided only when an appropriate data transfer request is received and processed.

Abstract: A Content-Terminated Direct Memory Access (CT-DMA) circuit autonomously transfers data of an unknown length from a source to a destination, terminating the transfer based on the content of the data. Filter criteria are provided to the CT-DMA prior to the data transfer. The filter criteria include pattern data that are compared to transfer data, and transfer termination rules for interpreting the comparison results. Data are written to the destination until the filter criteria are met. Representative filter criteria may include that one or more units of transfer data match pattern data; that one or more units of transfer data fail to match pattern data; or that one or more units of transfer data match pattern data a predetermined number of times.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for processing packets, for example, using a high performance massively parallel packet processing architecture, distributing packets or subsets thereof to individual packet processors and gathering the processed packet or subsets and forwarding the resultant modified or otherwise processed packets, accessing packet processing resources across a shared resource network, accessing packet processing resources using direct memory access techniques, and/or storing one overlapping portion of a packet in a global packet memory while providing a second overlapping portion to a packet processor. In one implementation, the processing of the packet includes accessing one or more processing resources across a resource network shared by multiple packet processing engines. In one implementation, a global packet memory is one of these resources. In one implementation, these resources are accessed using direct memory access (DMA) techniques.

Abstract: A direct memory access (DMA) engine has virtually all control in connection with data transfers that can involve one or both of primary and secondary controllers. The DMA engine receives a command related to a data transfer from a processor associated with the primary controller. This command causes the DMA engine to access processor memory to obtain metadata therefrom. In performing a DMA operation, the metadata enables the DMA engine to conduct data transfers between local memory and remote memory. In performing exclusive OR operations, the DMA engine is involved with conducting data transfers using local memory.
