Power Sequencing Patents (Class 713/330)
  • Patent number: 8839006
Abstract: Power management systems and methods that facilitate efficient and effective power conservation are presented. In one embodiment a power management method comprises: performing an initiation metric determination process, and adjusting operations of a logic component based on said threshold value. In one exemplary implementation, the initiation metric determination process includes monitoring activity of a logic component, and establishing a power conservation initiation threshold value. The initiation metric determination process can include performing a system architecture characteristic analysis in which a system architecture power-consumption break-even time (BE) is determined for the system. The initiation metric determination process can also include performing a system utilization analysis process is performed in which idle period durations detected during said monitoring are sorted into a variety of different length intervals and analyzed accordingly.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for asynchronous management of access requests to control power consumption. In some cases, by asynchronously managing power within a system, multiple dies of a NVM can simultaneously draw current in order to match the power demand. In particular, an arbiter of the system can receive multiple requests to draw current, where each request may be associated with a different die of the NVM. In some embodiments, the arbiter can determine the servicing order using the time of arrival of the request (e.g., a first-in, first-out scheme). In other embodiments, the arbiter can simultaneously service multiple requests so long as the servicing of the multiple requests does not exceed a power budget.

Abstract: Handshaking circuits are provided in a communications cable and in a device operable to be mated with the communications cable. Before a device can utilize the power supply signal of such a communications channel, the two handshaking circuits must sufficiently identify one another over a power supply signal with a decreased voltage. The decreased voltage allows for a cable plug to be provided with a safe, protected power that cannot cause harm to a human. The decreased voltage also reduces the chance that a device can receive a primary power supply signal from the cable before the device sufficiently identifies itself. Accordingly, a laptop may be connected to a portable music player, but the voltage of the power supply signal provided by the laptop to the cable may be decreased on-cable until the handshaking circuit of the portable music player sufficiently performs a handshaking operation with a on-cable handshaking circuit.

The method further includes identifying a plurality of devices disposed in the rack, wherein each device is connected to receive power from one of the power distribution units, and wherein the plurality of devices are selected from server nodes, network switches and external data storage devices. For each of the power distribution units, the plurality of devices that are connected to the power distribution unit are powered on in a sequence to prevent an inrush current from tripping the circuit breaker within the power distribution unit. The sequence powers on the devices identified as network switches and external data storage devices prior to powering on the devices identified as server nodes.

Abstract: Embodiments apply user-specific usage patterns to estimate and preserve remaining battery life on a computing device. An amount of battery drain and an execution context are determined and stored for a plurality of recurring time periods. The execution context identifies operations executed by the computing device, signal strength, and other data describing the associated time period. If one of the operations is expected to be executed during a recurrence of at least one of the time periods, the expected execution is adjusted based on execution context and an estimated remaining battery life for the computing device. For example, the computing device may postpone or reschedule the operation for a time period during which the operation is expected to have a greater likelihood of completing successfully. In some embodiments, the battery preservation operations are automatically enabled at a particular threshold.

Abstract: A power management method for use by a blade server or other networked computer having a CPU, memory, network interface, and timer. The method includes monitoring processes in the computer, determining that the computer has become idle, and switching the CPU and memory from an active state to a low power state while maintaining the network interface and timer in an active state. Power management for multicore processors is also provided. A power supply system can be used for providing shared power to groups of the networked computers that each have a similar active power demand. Each PSU in the power supply system is capable of supplying the active power demand at an efficiency greater than a preselected desired minimum efficiency. Changes in power requirements resulting from a computer switching between low power and active states can be accommodated by switching a single PSU into or out of the system.

  • Patent number: 8751847
Abstract: A server in a data center is supplied with power by a power distribution unit (“PDU”) having outlet-level power monitoring and switching capability. A predetermined server-specific time after a shutdown command has been issued to the server, the level of power consumption of the server is compared with a predetermined server-specific level of power consumption. If the level of power consumption of the server at that time is less than the server-specific level of power consumption, the server is considered to have been gracefully shut down and power to the server is switched off by delivering an appropriate command to the PDU. If the level of power consumption of the server at that time is not less than the server-specific level of consumption, this indicates a malfunction and power to the server is maintained so the cause can be determined and remedied without unnecessarily corrupting data or damaging the server.

Abstract: In a system and method for testing a wake-up on LAN (WOL) function of a computer, the computer connects to a server through a local area network (LAN). The system constructs a network connection between the server and the computer according to an Internet protocol (IP) address, a media access control (MAC) address and a name of the computer, and enables the computer in a wake-up mode when the server connects to the computer through the LAN. A wake-up command is generated for waking up a WOL function of the computer, the computer performs a WOL function test process according to the wake-up command. The sever detects a current status of the computer from a data packet when the data packet is received from the computer, and records the current status as a test result of the WOL function of the computer.

  • Patent number: 8723362
Abstract: The need for an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) in a data center is obviated by tying a DC voltage from a backup power source directly to the motherboards of multiple servers in the data center. AC power received from a power utility service is converted into a lower voltage by a site transformer and then provided to one or more power distribution units at a site. The power distribution units supply power to a plurality of servers, which include power supplies that convert the AC electrical power to DC electrical power for use by the servers' motherboards. In the event of a failure of power from the utility service, the backup power source provides DC electrical power to the motherboards, e.g., for sufficient time to start up a generator to provide power in place of the utility service.
