Abstract: Described herein is a high-availability storage system having hierarchical levels of storage functions. The storage system may comprise one or more hierarchical levels, each hierarchical level comprising physical servers and be assigned to perform a particular set of storage functions. Each physical server may implement one or more VMs configured to perform only the set of storage functions assigned to the hierarchical level on which the VM executes. VMs of a first hierarchical level may be configured to organize the VMs of a second hierarchical level into a redundant array of storage access servers for providing data reliability and high-availability of the storage system. VMs of a first hierarchical level are configured to produce and route sub-requests to the VMs of a second hierarchical level. Failure of a sub-request is detected and remedied by a VM of the first hierarchical level.

Abstract: For coordinated disaster recovery, a reconciliation process is performed for resolving intersecting and non-intersecting data amongst disaster recovery systems for takeover operations. An ownership synchronization process is coordinated for replica cartridges via the reconciliation process at the disaster recovery systems. The disaster recovery systems continue as a replication target for source systems and as a backup target for local backup applications.

Abstract: In a nonvolatile memory array, data is stored in multi-level cells (MLC) as upper-page data and lower-page data. Safe copies of both upper-page and lower-page data are stored in on-chip cache during programming. If a write fail occurs, data is recovered from on-chip cache. The controller does not have to maintain safe copies of data.

  • Patent number: 8307240
Abstract: The present invention is a method for communication between an initiator system and a block storage cluster. The method includes receiving a command at a first storage system of a block storage cluster. The command is transmitted by the initiator system to the first storage system via a network and includes a request for data. The method further includes transferring the stored data from the first storage system to the initiator system via the network when data requested in the data request is stored by the first storage system. The method further includes transmitting a referral response from the first storage system to the initiator system when a portion of the data requested in the data request is not stored by the first storage system, but is stored by a second storage system of the block storage cluster. The referral response indicates to the initiator system that: a) not all of the requested data was transferred; and b) that the second storage system stores the portion of the requested data.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of detecting a product data error in a storage system. First and second vital product data (VPD) EEPROMs are read. Indicators of whether wither or both reads failed are received. Based on these indicators, the contents of the VPD EEPROMs may be compared. Based on a result of the comparing indicating a match, an arbitrary one of the VPD EEPROMS is used. Based on an indicator indicating an error with the first VPD EEPROM, the second VPD EEPROM is used.

Abstract: The storage system includes a first storage device, configured to be installed in a first site and providing a primary logical volume in which data received from a host computer is written; a second storage device, configured to be installed in a second site and providing a virtual logical volume, which has no structure for storing data received from the first storage system; and a third storage device, configured to be installed in a third site and providing a secondary logical volume in which data received from the second storage system is written. Data written in the primary logical volume of the first storage device are remote-copied to the secondary logical volume of the third storage device via the virtual logical volume of the second storage device.

  • Patent number: 8291260
Abstract: This disclosure describes methods, systems and software that can be used to calculate the estimated mean time to data loss for a particular configuration of a disk group. For example, a system can be used to evaluate a plurality of configurations, and/or to select (and/or allow a user to select) an optimal configuration of the disk group, based, in some cases, on the relative estimated mean times to data loss of the various configurations. This can allow, if desired, the configuration of the disk group to minimize the likelihood of data loss in the disk group.

Abstract: A multi-disk fault-tolerant system, a method for generating a check block, and a method for recovering a data block are provided. The multi-disk fault-tolerant system includes a disk array and a calculation module connected through a system bus, the disk array is formed by p disks, and a fault-tolerant disk amount of the disk array is q; data in the disk array is arranged according to a form of a matrix M of (m+q)×p, where m is a prime number smaller than or equal to p?q; in the matrix M, a 0th row is virtual data blocks being virtual and having values being 0, a 1st row to an (m?1)th row are data blocks, an mth row to an (m+q?1)th row are check blocks. Therefore, during a procedure of generating the check block and recovering the data block in the multi-disk fault-tolerant system, calculation complexity is lowered.

  • Patent number: 8281181
Abstract: The method begins with a processing unit receiving an encoded slice for storage. The method continues with the processing unit determining whether to store the encoded slice in one of a first set of memory devices or in one of a second set of memory devices based on metadata associated with the encoded slice, wherein the first set of memory devices are continually active and the second set of memory devices are selectively active. The method continues with the processing unit stores the encoded slice in the one of the second set of memory devices when the encoded slice is to be stored in the one of the second set of memory devices. The method continues with the processing unit de-activating the one of the second set of memory devices, in accordance with a deactivation protocol, after storing the encoded slice.
