Abstract: A system for booting an operating system from a virtual hard disk. A partitioned memory segment is formed within a memory by a preconfigured amount. A boot application is loaded into the partitioned memory segment to form a virtual hard disk. In response to determining that the virtual hard disk contains an operating system, the operating system is booted from the virtual hard disk.

Abstract: A multi-chassis system includes at least a first chassis and a second chassis that each includes one or more blades. The one or more blades in turn include one or more ports. The two or more chassis are connected through use of an interconnector. The multi-chassis system may also include access to one or more microprocessors that may execute thereon software that controls the propagation of the arm condition. The arm condition is generated at a first port of a first chassis or network analyzer blade coupled to the first chassis. The arm condition is then transmitted to one or more additional ports of the first chassis while not being transmitted to any ports of the second chassis. Finally, the reception of a precondition for triggering defined by the arm condition is limited to those ports that have received the arm condition.

Abstract: Test cases to test control strategies of a control process are specified in input files. The instructions in the input files are automatically read by a block tester, which interfaces with the control system to issue the instructions. As a test designer can create the instructions in the input files a priori, the tests may be carefully designed to avoid errors, in addition to performing exhaustive tests.

Abstract: A system that monitors telemetry from a host computer system to detect degradation in a remote storage device. During operation, the system monitors performance parameters from a host computer system which accesses the remote storage device, wherein the performance parameters relate to the interactions between the host computer system and the remote storage device. The system then determines whether the monitored performance parameters have deviated from predicted values for the performance parameters. If so, the system generates a signal indicating that the remote storage device has degraded.

Abstract: Deviation of expected response times is used to characterize the health of one or more backend machines invoked by an application to process a request. Performance data generated in response to monitoring application execution is processed to select backend response time data. The selected data is processed to predict future values of a time series associated with backend response time. The predicted response time values are compared to actual response time values in the time series to determine a deviation from the predicted value. Deviation information for the time series data of response times is then reported to a user through an interface in a simple manner.

Abstract: A maximum likelihood decoder creates a decoding target data string and provides error candidates that are effective for an error correction circuit. The decoder has a detector for creating a decoding target data string, and an error candidate extractor for extracting the bit positions of which likelihood of each bit shows a high probability of error as the error candidates of the decoding target data string based on the likelihood information from the detector. Since only the bit positions of which error probability is high are extracted as error candidates, a correction circuit can extract the error candidates in the sequence of the lower likelihood, and the number of times of sorting in the sequence of likelihood can be decreased.

  • Publication number: 20080082867
Abstract: In a system for monitoring remote computing stations, each remote station includes an array of detectors and a controller configured to receive the detector signals. The controller causes a condition information generator to generate condition records including multiple condition information entries, each entry corresponding to one of the detector outputs. A monitoring station is adapted to send cues to the remote stations, and each station responds to a cue by presenting its condition record as a web page for retrieval by the monitoring station. The monitoring station sends the cues to stations in a sequence controlled by a user of the monitoring station, or alternatively, in a rapid and repeated sequence according to a station selection program written in Java or another universal language. The program generates interlocked instruction sets designed to recognize, as an error, a failure to connect with a remote station.

Abstract: In a tape recording apparatus having a write head and a read head, a data block is stored by writing to a tape via the write head. The tape moves past the write head in a predetermined direction and writes a first data block responsive to transmitting the first data block from the computer system. The read head then reads the written data block from the tape. For reading, the tape moves past the read head in the same, predetermined direction as the writing, and the reading of the first data block occurs without reversing the tape movement after the writing of the first data block. Portions of the transmitted and read data blocks are compared and a corruption indication is sent responsive to the comparing.

Abstract: Health statuses of components expressing a normal, a suspected faulty or a confirmed faulty condition are estimated. Based on results of tests minimal conflicts are identified explaining the test results. Readiness statuses are derived indicating a final value or a non-final value depending on whether or not additional testing of a component is expected to alter the component's health status. In case of non-final value[s], future minimal conflicts are identified expressing all combinations of potentially faulty components being consistent with the set of present minimal conflicts. Based on the minimal conflicts, additional tests are determined being potentially capable of producing results that cause the readiness status to be changed to the final value for one or more components. A status report is generated after evaluation of at least one of the additional tests.

Abstract: A fault detection unit detects a fault occurred in a detecting device which detects a rotational angle of a rotor with respect to a stator from sine and cosine wave signals having amplitudes modulated in a sinusoidal wave shape in a cycle of rotation of the rotor. The unit produces a judging value from the signals, judges occurrence of a fault from the value placed out of a normal range, and judges the device to be in a tentative fault state when the judgment is continued. After this judgment, when the rotational angle is changed over its entire range while the value is placed within the normal range, the unit judges the device to have returned to a normal state. In contrast, when the judgment is still continued, the unit judges the device to be in a determinate fault state and decides the occurrence of the fault.

Abstract: The present invention extends to methods, systems, and computer program products for appropriately detecting node failures in a rendezvous federation. A monitor node monitors a subject node. The subject node intermittently renews a time-to-live duration value with the monitor node to indicate the monitor node that the subject node has not failed. In some embodiments, each node in a pair of nodes monitors the other nodes in the pair of nodes. Thus, each node is a subject node and a monitor node. In further embodiments, an arbitration facility arbitrates failure reports.
