Abstract: The subject invention provides a unique system and method that facilitates management and navigation of various data objects by making use of a unique time-line based navigation tool. In particular, objects can organized into a plurality of bands based on their respective subject matter. Each band can be created to designate a particular topic. Objects are organized within the appropriate bands based in part on a time parameter such as a time or date that the object was created, for example. The navigation tool allows a user to navigate or browse through the bands and objects according to a desired time parameter or range of time. Zooming and other browsing options are available to the user to view objects of interest at varying levels of detail. The objects are represented as ASCII thumbnails that are operational. Thus, the content of any object can be modified directly via the thumbnail.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing video content. The method includes acquiring video data from a source. If the video data is not digitized, then the video data is digitized. The method includes generating scene indexes for the video data including a representative still image for each scene and combining the video data and scene indexes along with a media player on a video disc. The video player is operable to play the video data in accordance with the scene indexes including playing a scene from the video data on a client computer while displaying the representative stills for other of the scenes available for display on the video disc.

Abstract: Method, apparatus and signal bearing medium for processing multimedia data which improve server performance in rendering multimedia data. In one aspect, a method is provided for processing multimedia data without requiring utilization of the hard disk drive's data recovery procedure when soft or hard errors are encountered in connection with reading of the multimedia data from the hard disk drive. The method for processing multimedia data comprises: indexing the multimedia data to an i by j matrix; storing the i by j matrix in a data storage device utilizing odd/even index sequencing of the i by j matrix; retrieving data from the data storage device; and reconstructing the i by j matrix utilizing odd/even index sequencing of retrieved data.

Abstract: Systems and methods provide for graphically providing customer service features on a set top box (STB) or other television receiver in response to viewer instructions received from a remote control. Imagery including a customer service tile is presented on the display. A two-dimensional input is received from the remote control that indicates that the tile has been selected, and, in response to the received two-dimensional input, the customer service feature is provided. The customer service feature may provide information received from a remote source via a network, programming connection or other medium.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method for providing a moving picture map, the system including: a moving picture upload part for uploading moving pictures for one or more objects; and a map provision part for forming a moving picture map showing relations to other moving pictures according to subject matters, based on indexes corresponding to the moving pictures, and providing the moving picture map to a user interface for a moving picture search. Therefore, a user can be allowed to easily retrieve a number of moving pictures, and a manual and a review about a predetermined product can be made in a moving picture format for provision of the moving picture containing the manual and the review to consumers.

Abstract: An electronic content guide may organize content such as television programs into categories and subcategories. The categories and subcategories may be topical as well as time-based. As a result, the user can select a given time-based criteria and within that time-based criteria select topical subcategories. As a result, the number of programs that may be displayed in any given graphical user interface may be reduced to a manageable level. This may be done without requiring a great deal of scrolling to view selected categories, subcategories and particular programs.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed which provide a scroll bar for use with a display device. The scroll bar has an index and the data displayed on the display device is presented according to the index. In response to user commands the method and apparatus provide additional nested indexes for the displayed data.

Abstract: A technology is provided by which images can be specified in a moving picture and printed easily. First, a plurality of first still images are displayed on a display unit based on a plurality of images which are to be displayed at mutually differing times in a single moving picture. After receiving from a user a selection of a first still image from among the plurality of first still images, the moving picture is played on the display unit for a first time segment which is shorter than a playback time of the moving picture and includes a time at which the selected first still image is to be displayed. Then, according to an instruction by the user which is given during the playback of the moving picture, a second still image is displayed on the display unit based on an image which is to be displayed in the moving picture. The second still image is printed.

In general, in one implementation, a method includes generating a video sequence from a plurality of video segments, identifying an inability to output at least one video segment in the video sequence in substantially real time; and adjusting an output level associated with the at least one video segment to enable the at least one video segment to be output in substantially real time. A video is dynamically created by accessing the plurality of images and configuration data stored in the datastore and sequentially displaying the plurality of images stored in the datastore in conformance with the configuration data stored in the datastore. While the invention has utility in a number of different applications, one particularly well suited application is in the death care industry for creating commemorative videos for the recently deceased.

Selection by a user of a particular visual card of the first set of visual cards is enabled in order to view a television program corresponding to the time slot represented by the selected visual card. In an embodiment, a transition from display of a first visual card of the first set of visual cards to display of a second visual card of the first set of visual cards occurs automatically at the conclusion of a first time period.

Abstract: A method and system is proposed for generating index pictures for video streams, where the index pictures can be used in a video database for visual browsing by users to quickly find and retrieve video clips or files from the video database. The proposed method and system operates in such a manner as to first create a set of content items of particular interest or concern (particularly moving objects), and then combine each content item together with an associated activity record dataset in a predefined manner into a single image to serve as an index picture. In practice, each moving object and its associated activity record dataset can be displayed by means of 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) graphic icons or imagery.

Abstract: A method for providing widgets and a TV using the same are disclosed. The method for providing widgets includes searching for widgets related to a certain keyword or a broadcast program among widgets provided by a plurality of content providers, and displaying the searched widgets on a widget search list classified according to content provider. A user can thereby search for and use the widgets provided from various content providers more easily.

Abstract: Recorded video is accessed from printed notes or summaries derived from the video. Summaries may be created automatically by analyzing the recorded video, and annotations are made by a user on a device for note-taking with digital ink and video. The notes and/or summaries are printed along with data glyphs that provide time based indexes or offsets into the recorded video. The indexes or offsets are retrieved by scanning the glyph on the printout. The glyph information can be embedded in the printouts in many ways. One method is to associate block glyphs with annotations or images on the printed pages. Another method is to provide an address carpet in an annotated timeline. Yet another method is to provide a two-dimensional address carpet with X-Y position mapped to time which can be used to provide selected access to the video. The accessed video may be played back on the note-taking device on a pen computer, or on a summary interface on a Web browser-type device.

The content sequences are generated according to the viewer's specified, or demonstrated, viewing preferences. Multiple ‘users’ per household and multiple content sequences per viewer are possible. A content sequences is then streamed to the viewer, and looks to him/her just like a TV channel: when one program ends, another starts automatically. In one embodiment, these mosaics are further clustered using an adjustable similarity threshold. User selection of a particular video mosaic then initiates a playback of corresponding video frames. However, in contrast to conventional mosaicking schemes which simply play back the set of frames used to construct the mosaic, the Video Browser provides a playback of only those individual frames within which a particular point selected within the image mosaic was observed. Consequently, user selection of a point in one of the image mosaics serves to provide a targeted playback of only those frames of interest, rather than playing back the entire image sequence used to generate the mosaic.

Abstract: Displaying the numbers of viewers who are watching currently-broadcasted television programs on electronic program guides (EPGs) using information gathered via back channels from home entertainment systems. A signal source transmits a television broadcast signal to televisions used by viewers. Processing devices associated with the televisions determine which program is being displayed and transmit this information to a central server using a back channel from the home entertainment system. Viewing behavior information is gathered from a large number of viewers and is compiled into a report that is transmitted to the individual processing devices of the home entertainment systems. Using the information included in the report, the processing devices modify the EPGs to visually display the number of viewers watching the various television programs. The modification can take the form of selected colors, sizes, or shapes of the EPG entries or icons or animation displayed with the EPG.

In one technique, a list of predefined keywords is provided, describing the highlights, and the manual marking process can be implemented by just a few mouse clicks. A technique is provided for grouping highlights into a semantic hierarchy in real-time. A technique is provided for efficiently generating highlight metadata on live broadcast programs, using a coarse-to-fine indexing methodology in order for a operator to quickly generate highlight summaries of live broadcast programs.

Abstract: A method of controlling one or more devices by using a broadcasting receiving apparatus includes operations of collecting one or more pieces of information from the one or more devices such that the information corresponds to the one or more devices and contents stored in the one or more devices, generating a user interface by using the collected information and a user interface of the broadcasting receiving apparatus in order to control the one or more devices, and controlling the one or more devices based on a control command input via the generated user interface.

Abstract: An interactive television program guide system is provided. An interactive television program guide provides users with an opportunity to select programs for recording on a remote media server. Programs may also be recorded on a local media server. The program guide provides users with VCR-like control over programs that are played back from the media servers and over real-time cached copies of the programs. The program guide also provides users with an opportunity to designate gift recipients for whom programs may be recorded.

Abstract: The multimedia content browsing system for small mobile devices smoothly blends three key tasks: querying the multimedia contents by keywords, exploring the search results by viewing keyframes of the multimedia contents, and playing a stream of the multimedia contents, e.g., videos or video segments. Videos can be stored in a segment-based multimedia content database, which is designed to support the browsing, retrieval, and reuse of videos. A layered imaging model is introduced where each layer may have its own transparent value set individually, continuously, and interactively, and the layers can overlap on top of each other when rendered on the screen. Since a small mobile device alone may not have enough resources to handle the entire task of multimedia content browsing, a scalable architecture can be adopted to break up the task among the small mobile device, a Hard Disk Drive (HDD), and a resource-rich computing device.

Abstract: An electronic programming guide (“EPG”) in accordance with the invention provides pictograms and/or logos, to indicate to a television viewer the television programs being displayed on a television. The EPG information display format is thus easier to recognize than prior art EPG formats. In one embodiment, the EPG pictograms have 3D characteristics. The EPG information can be displayed in a window within a television screen while a program is being shown on the remainder of the screen. Thus, the viewer can know what is playing on the various channels while he or she is watching one of the channels. In one embodiment, the EPG is used in conjunction with a remote controller that includes a help button for facilitating operation of the EPG by the user. The EPG comprises a set of geometric surfaces located in virtual 3D space. The pictograms and/or logos, along with alpha-numeric text data and video clips are applied to the geometric surfaces using a 3D graphics pipeline.
