Abstract: An information processing apparatus generates and displays a mixed reality image in which a plurality of subjects have virtual objects by their hands. The apparatus includes a unit for measuring a position of the hand of the subject, a unit for measuring a view position and a view direction of the subject, and a unit for generating the virtual object and synthesizing the virtual object with the real space image. Also included is an upcast action detecting unit for calculating a shifting speed of the hand in an upward direction and for detecting an upcast action, a unit for judging that the hand is stopped and a determining unit for determining a partner subject to whom the virtual object is upcast.

Abstract: An improved application sharing system and method are described wherein shared window data is treated according to different sets of rules depending upon the fraction of the shared window data that corresponds to the actual shared window. In this manner, occlusions of a shared window on a sharer display may be disguised or handled by a viewer display to minimize the impact of the occlusion on a viewing user, providing a more consistent and less confusing viewer experience.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure provide systems and methods for managing user-sessions. Briefly described, in architecture, one embodiment of the system, among others, includes logic configured to display a user interface for initiating a command to launch a business application on a computer display of a user; logic configured to associate a launched business application with a user-session; logic configured to display business applications of an active session on the computer display; a first user interface control for allowing a user to select a particular business application of an inactive session; and logic configured to display the selected particular business application on the computer display with the business applications associated with the active session. Other systems and method are also provided.

Abstract: A method and system for facilitating information exchange between individuals and entities interacting on a shared project are provided, and more particularly to a method and system for horizontal. i.e., non-hierarchical, participation in and/or contribution to a spreadsheet-based project. The method and system is Web-based and utilizes conventional browser and spreadsheet technology to achieve collaborative exchanges of information on an enterprise-wide basis. The method and system also facilitate efficacious remote information access and exchange, e.g., over a computer network such as the Internet and/or the World Wide Web, through a caching function that combines individual queries initiated by a spreadsheet program before transmitting across a network to a server for consideration.

Abstract: A customization system acquires information on an operation screen which is customized for a specific user on the basis of customization information for the specific user and judges whether or not the operation screen can be displayed on an operation panel of a specific image forming apparatus out of a plurality of image forming apparatuses on the basis of a result of comparison between the pixel number size of the operation panel and the required pixel number size which is required to display the operation screen. Further, the customization system displays a hierarchical menu screen in which a plurality of buttons included in the operation screen are hierarchized on the operation panel when it is judged that the operation screen can not be displayed on the operation panel.

Abstract: Techniques for real-time observation assessment are provided. The techniques, which are designed for educators, take advantage of handheld computers, desktop/laptop computers and Internet access in order to reduce the paperwork associated with conventional educational assessments. An array of instructional assessment applications are designed to run on handheld computers. The instructional assessment applications may be based on existing and widely used paper methodologies. A common Web-based platform for assessment application distribution, selection, download, data management and reporting is also provided. Users can then periodically synchronize instructional data (assessments, diagnostic results, notes and/or schedules) to the Web site. At the Web site, browser-based reports and analysis can be viewed, administered and shared via electronic mail.

Abstract: A graphics system is disclosed. The graphics system includes at least one GPU (graphics processing unit) for processing a compute workload. The graphics system uses a multi-user manager for allocating the compute workload capability for each one of a plurality of users. Each user will use an access terminal.

Abstract: A window management mechanism allows a user to open a window as a drawer or, perhaps more appropriately named, a pop-up window. The drawer is an opened window that a user has dragged down to a drawer region at the bottom of the screen such that only the title bar or some drawer handle illustration is left showing. When the user does this, the window remains open but is kept offscreen. The user may momentarily pop the window back onto the screen by clicking on the window title bar or drawer handle, or by dragging the cursor into the window icon during a drag. The window stays onscreen as long as no other windows are selected. As soon as a user selects another window, or opens a file with a double click within the drawer, the window slides back offscreen. This allows the user to set up easy access windows. Another feature of a drawer window allows the user to open them during a drag. To do so, the user drags an object or the cursor into the drawer window that is desired to be opened.

Abstract: A user interface (UI), which reflects exchanges in the past and the future between a user and entities. The UI includes a background having a user defined granularity, a plurality of dots, which each represent at least one collaborative exchange of a user and which are each arranged on the background, a graphic connection between any two or more dots which each represent exchanges between the user and similar entities, a first graphic which includes first level information, and a second graphic which includes second level information. For any set of one or more dots which each represent exchanges between the user and similar entities, the dot closest to or within the central area includes a graphical identifier that indicates whether the entity is currently available for a new exchange.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a solution for defining a private user area in a surface based computer. The solution can identify a surface of a surface based computer. At least one private user area can be defined for the surface. A region of the surface can be demarcated for each defined private user area. Input/output for each demarcated private user area can be handed in a manner specific to the private user area, which is different from how input/output is handled for other portions of the surface. In one embodiment, different users can be associated with multiple ones of a set of two or more different private user areas. Each user can concurrently utilize their own private user area as if that private user area was a computing space dedicated to that user.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, system, and signal-bearing medium that, in an embodiment, determine whether a user at a first client has a chat session already active at a second client with a third client in response to a request for initiation of a chat session for the user at the first client. If the user does already have a chat session active, the third client is notified that the first client replaces the second client in the chat session. Then chat data from the second client is copied to the first client, and a disconnect message is sent to the second client from first client. In various embodiments, the determination may be made by sending a query to a plurality of clients connected via a network or by sending a query to a server that serves the first client, the second client, and the third client. The copied chat data, which may include messages sent between the second client and the third client, is presented at the first client.

Abstract: Display of information for two oppositely situated users is improved. A computing device includes a display and a mechanism. A first user views the display at a first end thereof, and a second user views the display at a second end thereof opposite the first end. The mechanism orients information displayed on the display so that the information is right-side-up for the second user. The mechanism displays a first window that is right-side-up for the second user, in which the information is displayed in a scaled manner. The first window overlaps the information displayed on the display. The mechanism may display a second window on the display that is right-side-up for the user, and that displays a portion of the information in a full-size, non-scaled manner. Alternatively or additionally, the mechanism may display a blacked-out portion within the first window corresponding to where the first window overlaps the information displayed.

Abstract: A multifunction device (MFD) includes a control system and a plurality of associated local user interfaces including a first local user interface in communication with the control system for user selection of a selected one of a first group of mutually exclusive operations under the control of the control system and a second local user interface in communication with the control system for user selection of a selected one of a second group of mutually exclusive operations, different from the first group of operations, which are under the control of the control system. Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product for providing a multi-user shared e-mail system on a single computer is described. The system enables multiple users to use a single computer to provide for each user, one at a time, access to a personal secure e-mail account environment for that user. The e-mail account environment can include an inbox, an outbox and one or more folders to store received e-mail. The multiple e-mail account environments are all stored on the single computer. The single computer can be standalone, or can include an interface to a network, such as the Internet, for delivery of e-mail to users whose e-mail accounts do not reside on the single computer. The multi-user e-mail account system on a shared single computer provides cost efficient access for a large number of users which do not each need their own computer. Responsive to a selection of a user identity, a second-level user interface including a main data screen associated with the selected user identity is displayed. Responsive to a user selecting data from the main data screen, a third-level user interface is displayed to allow user examination of the selected data. Received messages are categorized and associated with a user identity based on the classification result.

Abstract: An information processing apparatus having a simplified switching function of a user is disclosed that can reduce the processing burden upon a CPU and eliminate an action that is not intended by its user. If an application, which implements a function of a device or the like that is not supported as a standard device by an OS and is started up for each user, has been started up by a first user who is not active at present, that is, a user in a logon state whose desktop has been switched to that of a second user, then part of the processing of the application is temporarily stopped. Then, if it is detected that the first user is rendered operative, that is, when the desktop is switched to that of the first user, the processing of the application of the first user is re-started.

Abstract: Hot deployable video management modules maintain a video device management platform by integrating independently developed support for new or updated video devices at runtime. A video device module loader builds a management interface for the new or updated video device associated with the management module based on attributes and operations of the video device defined by an XML descriptor and based on access instructions. The management interface is used to create a video device instance in the management platform for each video device under management. The management platform manages a variety of different types of video devices with a video device management module added as a given video device is added to the management platform or an already managed video device is updated.

Abstract: A user interface manager, interposed between a Windows service and user interface modules that communicate with the Windows service in distinct system status scenarios, can record interaction between the Windows service and each of the user interface modules. The recorded interaction, along with information collected from the user interface modules, can be used in conjunction so that user interaction with a first one of the user interface modules may continue with a second one of the user interface modules after a switch from one system status (e.g., logged on) to another system status (e.g., locked). Alternatively, responsive to the switch from one system status to another system status the user interface manager may simply stop the executing user interface module so that the interaction may be started over in the new system status.

Abstract: A data replication system and method. The method and apparatus provides for an efficient means of replicating data over a network in the form of a file between two individuals, or within defined groups of individuals, using a variety of devices to access the Internet, including computers, personal data assistants (“PDA”s) and wireless devices. A group is formed through an exchange of invitation, acceptance, and welcome messages. A group member designates a replication directory on the group member's computer. Files placed in the directory are replicated and stored in the replication directory of each of the other members of the group. Any change to a replicated file causes a message by one member to be sent to all other members. Changes are conveyed via patches that represent the changes made to a replicated file. Replicated files are saved without replacing previous versions of the replicated file. The group formation and file replication processes are accomplished using existing network protocols.

The system and method includes providing multiple IM sessions, displaying a first one of the IM sessions in an IM session window. Representing each one of the IM sessions as a corresponding one of a number of indicators in the IM session window.

Abstract: A method, system, and program product are provided in which display data for a display area that includes at least one window is mapped to a shared format. Attribute information for each window in the display area is determined and stored in a unique node. A hierarchy of nodes is generated using the attribute information. For each pixel in the display area, the corresponding node is determined. Using the attribute information in the node, the display data is mapped to a shared format. The mapped display data can then be shared with one or more other systems.

Abstract: A system and method for conducting market research studies on online content utilizing moderator and respondent computers connected over a network. A moderator at the moderator computer directs a plurality of respondents at the respondent computers to view preselected subject matter displayed on the respondent computers and collects comments and reactions on the subject matter from the respondents in a database for later review and for benchmarking. Software resident in the respondent computers enables the respondents to view a plurality of screens showing different aspects of the online content and, in a preferred embodiment, provides buttons that can be activated by the respondents to indicate a reaction to the content. In addition, the preferred embodiment enables the respondents to provide text comments to the content.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for electronically providing vehicle identification and registration information to a vehicle. The system includes a remote control unit, which receives and stores vehicle identification and registration information. At least one computer on the vehicle is configured to receive the vehicle identification and registration information and to store such information. An electric license plate coupled to this computer for electronically displaying at least a portion of the identification and registration information stored in the computer.

A first short-distance communication device carries out communication with the mobile terminal located in a predetermined communication range and a second communication device exchanges data with the mobile terminal after the user of the mobile terminal has been authenticated. Similarly, the mobile terminal also has a short-distance communication device for carrying out communication with the electronic notice board located in a predetermined communication range and a second communication device for exchanging data with the electronic notice board after the user of the mobile terminal has been authenticated. Since users of the electronic notice board must be close by, it is possible to avoid improper use of the electronic notice board by any user located a long distance away from the electronic notice board.

Abstract: A graphical user interface and method for data entry of a plurality of fields of information in a computer system, such as a web browser interface, using small scrolling and paging of tabular data and entry fields. A JAVA script is employed to produce a form-like user interface in which a user may enter information in fields shown in a graphical user interface (“GUI”) window display area. The GUI is provided with a NEXT button which allows the user to indicate that he or she has more data to enter than can be entered in the currently available view of the form in the GUI window display area. The script saves the currently entered data into a set of hidden fields or variables, and provides a new screen with clear fields for additional data entry. By selecting the PREVIOUS button provided by the JAVA script on the GUI, the user may cause the script to recall previously saved data from the hidden fields or variables and to redisplay them so that the user may review or edit previously entered information.
