Patent number: 7868893Abstract: This application describes a system that captures 3D geometry commands from a first 3D graphics process and stores them in a shared memory. A second 3D environment process creates a 3D display environment using a display and display hardware. A third process obtains the 3D commands and supplies them to the hardware to place 3D objects in the 3D environment. The result is a fused display environment where 3D objects are displayed along with other display elements. Input events in the environment are analyzed and mapped to the 3D graphics process or the environment where they affect corresponding processing.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2006Date of Patent: January 11, 2011Assignee: Graphics Properties Holdings, Inc.Inventors: William J. Patent number: 7861186Abstract: Techniques provide for the dynamic display of a page-oriented information asset using an audio output mode. Pluralities of elements in the page-oriented information asset are determined based on chapters, sections, paragraphs, sentences, words and the like. The elements are rendered to an audio output mode. Optionally selectable representations of the elements are also determined and output using a 3-dimension-like rendering to a visual output mode. The 3-dimension-like rendering of the visual representations of the elements shows how the current element relates to the other elements and its location within the page-oriented information asset. The 3-dimension-like rendering provides visual orientation or context within the page-oriented information asset. The visual representations of the elements are optionally selectable as spatial context indicators providing direct navigation control to support reading, browsing and information retrieval tasks within the page-oriented information asset.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2007Date of Patent: December 28, 2010Assignee: Palo Alto Research Center IncorporatedInventors: Mark J. Patent number: 7665033Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that uses a zooming effect to provide additional display space to manage applications. In one mode of operation, the system presents an image of a computer desktop to the user on a display device. When the system receives a request from a user to provide additional display space in a display device for application management purposes, the system decreases the size of the computer desktop in the display device to provide an extended display area. The system then facilitates application management by displaying items useful for application management in this extended display area. Patent number: 7661071Abstract: A three-dimensional (3-D) user interface (UI) creation system maps a two-dimensional (2-D), interactive UI to an 3-D object template in a 3-D scene. Once mapped, the 2-D UI functions as a simple user interface while appearing as a skin to the 3-D object. A 3-D UI creation tool applies image resources of a 2-D UI template to a 3-D wire frame template to create a 3-D UI. The system provides for rapid implementation of a 3-D UI without need for understanding a 3-D space or 3-D authoring software. The process includes preparing a 2-D UI, loading a 3-D scene of 3-D objects, and mapping the 2-D UI to a 3-D object template in the 3-D scene. A scheme file provides a specification for recreating the 3-D scene in a runtime module whereby the 3-D scene functions as a 3-D UI system, allowing interaction via a user input system.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2006Date of Patent: February 9, 2010Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventor: Victor K. Patent number: 7552402Abstract: A graphical user interface system may position and orient a user interface element to be displayed on an optically-sensitive display surface. The position of the object may be based on the position of a point of contact that an object (e.g., a person's finger, a block of wood, etc.) makes against the display surface. The orientation of the object may be determined using the shadow cast by the object on the surface. An axis may be determined between the shadow and the point of contact, and the axis may be used as a frame of reference (e.g., a vertical axis) for the orientation of the interface element. Further movement of the object and/or shadow can either result in further movement/reorientation of the interface, or as an actual input to the interface. If used for an actual input, the interface may be fixed at its initial position and orientation to allow the additional movement to be interpreted.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2006Date of Patent: June 23, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventor: Charles Bilow

Patent number: 7512902Abstract: The present invention provides a three-dimensional user interface for a computer system that allows a user to combine and store a group of windows as a task. The image of each task can be positioned within a three-dimensional environment such that the user may utilize spatial memory in order remember where a particular task is located. In further embodiments of the invention, the three-dimensional environment includes a stage, which is used to display the task with the current focus. When a user selects a new task in the gallery, the task is moved to the stage and given focus. If a previous task was on the stage, an image of the previous task is captured. This image is then moved into the task gallery away from the stage. This process allows users to switch between multiple window configurations with a simple action.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2004Date of Patent: March 31, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: George G. Patent number: 7492362Abstract: A view image rendering module (102) generates an image of a virtual space on the basis of a first viewpoint indicating the viewpoint of a user on the virtual space, and displays the generated image on a view image presentation module (101). A map image rendering module (104) generates a map image indicating a region around the position of the first viewpoint on the virtual space, and displays the generated map image on a map image presentation module (103). The position of the first viewpoint and the visual axis direction are controlled using a viewpoint position•visual axis direction input module (106) which is provided on the display surface of the map image presentation module (103). Furthermore, a virtual object set on the virtual space undergoes manipulation control using a virtual object manipulation input module (107) which is provided on the display surface of the map image presentation module (103).Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2003Date of Patent: February 17, 2009Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yukio Sakagawa, Akihiro Katayama, Masahiro Suzuki

Patent number: 7480873Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that facilitates manipulating a 2D window within a three-dimensional (3D) display model. During operation, the system receives an input from a 2D pointing device, wherein the input specifies a 2D offset within a 2D display, and wherein the 2D display provides a view into the 3D display model. Next, the system uses the 2D offset to move a cursor to a position in the 2D display, and then determines if the cursor overlaps a window within the 3D display model. If so, the system determines a 2D position of the cursor with respect to a 2D coordinate system for the window, and communicates this 2D position to an application associated with the window. This enables a user of the 2D pointing device to interact with the application.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2003Date of Patent: January 20, 2009Assignee: Sun Microsystems, Inc.Inventor: Hideya Kawahara
