The graphical user interface has a compass structure with at least four branches adjacent to a central button. The graphical user interface receives a user selection on the compass structure. A menu is generated based on the user selection on the compass structure and a context of the application. The menu is displayed adjacent to the compass structure.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention disclose a method and a corresponding apparatus for displaying an arc menu index, which are used to display index characters on an arc display bar. The method according to an embodiment of the present invention includes: receiving a menu expanding instruction; and expanding an arc menu index on a display according to the menu expanding instruction, where the arc menu index includes an index operation area, an index pointer, and index characters; the index operation area is an area encompassed by an arc border line displayed on the display and a display frame intersecting the arc border line, the index characters are arranged along the arc border line, and the index pointer is located in the index operation area and is configured to indicate a selected index character.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are generally related to graphical user interfaces (GUIs), and more specifically to selecting items from a radial menu. More specifically, embodiments of the invention provide a complex set of gestures which, when performed using a screen pointer, facilitate fast and accurate selection of radial menu items from a radial menu. The gestures may generally involve a first movement of the screen pointer to activate a desired radial menu item, and a second predefined movement of the screen pointer within a predefined selection zone to select the radial menu item.

Abstract: Concepts and technologies are described herein for dial-based user interfaces. In accordance with the concepts and technologies disclosed herein, a user device presents a dial-based user interface. The dial-based user interface can be configured with user interface controls associated with various options. In response to detecting selection of a user interface control associated with an option having a numeric value, the user device can modify the dial-based user interface to present a numeric adjustment control that can be interfaced with by a user to adjust the numeric value associated with the option. The dial-based user interface also can be modified to show selected options, option states, option values, option selection history, and/or other information.

Abstract: A method for providing an application carousel includes providing a self-service website for a third party partner supplier to create, select or group apps in a unique app carousel created by the supplier in the website. Blogs, reviews or comments may be provided in association with a GUI of the app carousel to promote the app carousel. The supplier populates the app carousel with app icons which may be rotated about a looped carousel display track. The app carousel is then exposed for location by consumers via their electronic devices and associated browsers.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and machine-readable and executable instructions are provided for displaying a radial graphical user interface. The radial graphical user interface can include displaying a first layer radial menu item as a circular shape and displaying a second layer radial menu of a number of first menu sub-items related to the first layer menu item grouped concentrically around the first layer radial menu in response to a user selecting the first menu item. The graphical user interface can also include replacing the first layer menu with a user selected first menu sub-item and replacing the second layer radial menu with a number of second menu sub-items related to the selected first menu sub-item in response to a user selecting one of the number of first menu sub-items, wherein the second layer is rotatable by a user.

A user of the electronic device is notified when a prior warning time of any item is reached, and a second color is displayed in the determined area of the item. A third color is displayed in the determined area of the item when the starting time of the item has been reached.

Abstract: A collaboration system provides enhanced user interface to enable users to interact with electronic devices. In one embodiment, users can add content to a digital system by using a pen that streams coordinates so that input to the digital system may be based on conventional pen and paper handwriting. In another embodiment, a pie-based menu system is used for input to large display area digital devices in which an occluded portion of the pie-based menu system is not used for direct input by the user. The selection of which areas of the pie-based menu system should be omitted from use is adaptive and responsive to whether the user is left-handed or right-handed, and the wrist angle defined by the user's posture. In still another embodiment, an ergonomic open-shaped pie menu system is provided to facilitate selection of options on a digital surface.

Abstract: RingGuide is an organizational and social media methodology and system that enables new forms of distributed interfaces on any 2D or 3D class electronic device. The RingGuide comprises a hierarchy of Rings displaying on one or more of these devices. The Rings may contain Asset Cells representing a database record available in associated local or remote databases (a movie, video or graphical advertisement, TV show, metadata, etc.); Code Cells capable of executing specific functionality, such as search, “show by time”, a widget that displays realtime weather information or a separately launchable application such as an instant messaging client; Element Cells showing locally or remotely update-able user interface elements, and Link Cells that refer to sub-Rings that may be organized by genre, media owner brands, etc.

Abstract: Systems and methods for efficiently updating text or symbol annunciations outputted by an avionics system on legacy displays. Instead of using a set sweeping pattern to update the display, a smart updating concept is used. The smart updating concept senses when the pilot is adjusting the selected altitude control (or other user interface device that will alter displayed annunciations), then gives priority to updating the radial lines on the display that contain the annunciation field. Once the annunciation field has been updated, the display returns to normal operation.

Abstract: A portable electronics device for displaying a graphical user interface (“GUI”) element on a screen of the device includes a screen, a user input device, a GUI element, and a port for receiving audio headgear. Content is displayed on a screen of the device, the content being associated with a function of the device. Upon receiving user input, the GUI element is displayed on the screen by overlaying the GUI element above the content. The GUI element graphically represents one or more menu selection items, permitting the user of the device to select a menu selection item without navigating out of the function of the device prior to selecting the menu selection item.

Abstract: In a graphical user interface a display is animated by activation with an input device with a first concentric menu comprising a first grouping of menu items having a subset of one or more items from a set of menu items. Then, after selecting one menu item out of the first grouping of menu items, the display is animated with at least one additional grouping of menu items that are each concentrically in a pie sliced shape. The graphical user interface can be activated by a user at any position on the display area via the input device.

In one embodiment, a software application executed by a processor of a telecommunications device identifies a first subset of contacts selected at least in part by a user of the telecommunications device and a second subset of contacts. Upon selection of a termination item or execution of a command, a submenu may be hidden and/or a parent menu displayed.

Presenting a plurality of executable commands and/or links to submenus, a context based menu may be displayed in various shapes and forms in relation to selected content displayed on a user interface and/or other factors such as available display space, user attributes, and similar ones. Submenus presenting commands within a category may be displayed in place of, adjacent to, or overlapping with a parent context based menu. Menu position, contents, and/or shape may be adjusted in response to changes in selected content, user contact location, changes in user interface, and the like.

Abstract: Radial context based menus are employed for content management through touch or gesture actions, keyboard entries, mouse or pen actions, and similar input. Different actions and combinations of actions enable users to activate submenus, execute commands, or collapse context based menus. Accessibility features are integrated with radial context based menus to ease user interaction with radial context based menu controls. Distinct accessibility controls are superimposed on radial context based menu controls to aid with command interactions. Additionally, contrast schemes are implemented on radial context based menu controls and surrounding regions to differentiate the context base menu controls for visual acuity.

The interface is typically linked to a database comprising stored image and other information which corresponds to the selectable characteristics, whereby an image that corresponds to an item which meets a selected characteristic is retrieved and displayed. Information other than the image which corresponds to the selectable characteristics may also be retrieved and displayed. In some embodiments, the stored images comprise a single image, which matches all the selected characteristics. In alternate embodiments, the displayed image comprises a composite image that is based upon stored images which correspond to different selected characteristics. An image viewing system utilizing an infinite cylinder user interface includes a data store storing a plurality of images in a local visual dictionary, each of the plurality of images configured to convey a message to at least one additional user as a replacement for words; a network interface communicatively coupled to a network; a processor communicatively coupled to the data store and the network interface; and instructions executable by the processor, and in response to such execution causes the processor to: present a set of the plurality of images in an infinite cylinder user interface; and manipulate the infinite cylinder user interface in a plurality of movement modes based on user input.

Abstract: There is provided a novel menu selection method in a mobile phone. Also provided is a cursor displaying method with which a user can intuitively recognize a moving direction and moving speed. In addition, a novel scrollbar with which the user can recognize, in a case of displaying menus beyond a display screen, a range currently displayed on a display screen among all the menus and a current cursor position within the menus displayed on the current display screen.

Abstract: A display manager allows for visualization and navigation of a semantic network via an interactive graphical user interface. The display manager accesses a semantic network model defining relationships amongst nodes in the semantic network. Given a portion of the semantic network, the display manager renders a radial perspective to represent the node relationships in the given portion of the semantic network. The radial perspective includes a centered node, around which other displayed nodes and relationships are substantially concentrically arranged. To navigate to and view a different portion of the semantic network, the display manager allows the user to select nodes currently displayed in the radial perspective. In response to selection of one or more nodes, the display manager updates the radial perspective to represent nodes and node relationships from a different portion of the semantic network with the user-selected node as a new center node.

Abstract: Systems, methods and products are described that provide a dock for favorite applications. One aspect includes providing a dock point on a display device of an information handling device; responsive to user input associated with said dock point, launching a utility organizing a sub-set of user applications installed on said information handling device in a predetermined arrangement of launch points; providing an animated movement of said launch points in said utility responsive to user input; and responsive to user input selecting a launch point in said utility, launching an application associated with said launch point on the information handling device. Abstract: An electronic device and a method arrange icons on a screen of the electronic device. In the method, when a user selects an icon displayed on a screen, the device determines whether there is a sub-icon associated with the selected icon. If there is a sub-icon, the device arranges and displays the sub-icon in a radial arrangement on the screen around the selected icon, so the user can visually perceive the relation between the selected icon and its sub-icon, and easily select and use a desired function or data associated with the sub-icon.

Abstract: Methods and systems for interface management are provided. First, at least one interface is provided and displayed on a screen of the electronic device. The interface is a page or a menu. A plurality of candidate tilt interface images corresponding to the interface are provided, wherein the respective candidate tilt interface images correspond to the interface which is to be rotated at various angles. Then, a signal including a movement of an object continuously detected on the screen is received. In response to the signal, one of the candidate tilt interface images is selected as a specific tilt interface image according to a distance corresponding to the movement of the object on the screen, and the specific tilt interface image is displayed on the screen.

Abstract: A selection candidate display method, a selection candidate display device, and an input/output device are provided. When a number of receivable broadcasting stations is not “4” or less, a controller allocates the receivable broadcasting stations to three segmented logical areas among four segmented logical areas, allocates a scroll area to the remaining one logical area, and displays the channel numbers of the allocated receivable broadcasting stations and information indicating the scroll area, for example, “S” in the respective logical areas of a circle pad. Abstract: A method of controlling at least a portion of a flow of program activity of a computer program including executing, by a processor, a computer program stored in memory to initiate the flow of program activity, the flow of program activity including a program environment generated by the computer program and displayed on a graphical user interface, wherein the computer program is adapted to allow an end user to interact with the program environment and at least one graphical menu being displayed on the graphical user interface in conjunction with the program environment, wherein the computer program is adapted to allow an end user to interact with the at least one graphical menu without interrupting the ability of the end user to interact with the program environment.

Abstract: This application relates to information analysis and more particularly to a system and method for interactive visual representation of information content and relationships using layouts and gestures. A visualization tool is provided which facilitates both ad-hoc and more formal analytical tasks as a flexible and expressive thinking environment. The tool provides a space focused on ‘Human Interaction with Information’ and enabling evidence marshalling. Capabilities of the tool include put-this-there cognition, automatic analysis templates, and gestures for the fluid expression of thought and scalability mechanisms to support large analysis tasks.

Performance of a navigation functionality in a personal wireless navigation system is higher and more comparable and competitive with portable navigation devices and in-car navigation systems, and the search capability is comparable and competitive with the most popular web search engines. A user interface (UI) and look and feel of the personal wireless navigation system is provided which is enhanced so that users do not simply want to use the product—they covet it. The personal wireless navigation system may be constructed such that a subset of it with fewer features and functions can be productized, marketed and deployed to users.

Abstract: A graphical user interface made up of icons representing individual files and collectively forming the shape of a spiral is described along with methods of using and creating the graphical user interface. The spiral interface is useful to display detailed information about many of the items in a list and facilitates manipulation of list order and selection of the active file in the list. The size of each first level segment is proportional to a weight of the corresponding first level node. The wheel further includes a second concentric ring having a larger radius than the first concentric ring and adjacent to the first concentric ring, and comprising a plurality of second level segments, each representing a second level node. The size of each of the second level segments is proportional to the weight of the corresponding second level node. The wheel may include additional concentric rings as needed, and depending on the resolution and size of the display.

Abstract: A computer provides a visible representation feature to display a plurality of regions to visibly represent a plurality of stocks and a plurality of stock market indices in a user's watch list. Each region represents a respective one of the stocks and the stock market indices in the user's watch list. Each region is user-selectable using a touch screen input device, is bordered by a respective color that is based on a change in price of its represented one of the stocks and the stock market indices in the user's watch list, and has an interior color that is not based on the change in price. In response to a user selection of a region from the touch screen input device, the computer retrieves a chart associated with the respective one of the stocks and the stock market indices in the user's watch list represented by the region.
