Abstract: A method for cold working pipe elements use two or more cams, each having a gear which meshes with a pinion to turn all of the cams. Each cam has a cam surface with a region of increasing radius and may also have a region of constant radius extending around a cam body. Each cam may also have a traction surface extending around a cam body. The method includes contacting the pipe element with a plurality of cam surfaces simultaneously at a plurality of locations on the pipe element and rotating the pipe element, thereby simultaneously rotating the cam surfaces. Each cam surface engages the pipe element with an increasing radius and a region of constant radius if present to deform the pipe element and form the groove.

A family of metal strip profiles can be created by the method and apparatus of the present invention wherein the family of strip profiles created prior to roll shifting are strip profiles expressed by polynomial functions having terms of the n.sup.th order, where n is preferably 1-5 inclusive, and the family of strip profiles produced by shifting at least one upper roll having an inverse symmetrical profile and at least one lower roll having an inverse symmetrical profile are strip profiles expressed by polynomial functions having terms of the (n-1).sup.th order, where n is preferably 1-5, inclusive.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming an end portion of a cylindrical member or cylinder includes at least one roller supported on a main shaft to be radially moved to and from the main shaft. The cylinder is supported to position the central axis thereof on the plane including the main shaft. Then, at least one of the cylinder and the roller is driven to be rotated relative to each other about an oblique axis inclined against the central axis of the cylinder, while the roller is moved radially toward the oblique axis, with the roller being in substantial contact with the outer surface of the one end portion of the cylinder. As a result, the one end portion of the cylinder is formed into a reduced diameter portion such as a tapered portion having the oblique axis.

Abstract: To suppress the influence of roll eccentricities on a feedback control of a rolling-stock thickness in the thickness control, it is generally known to provide an insensitive dead zone for signal fluctuations caused by the roll eccentricities, and for the zone width of this insensitive dead zone to be varied relative to the magnitude of the signal fluctuations. To prevent actual thickness fluctuation in the rolling stock from leading to a widening of the dead zone, it is provided for the signal fluctuations drawn upon to vary the zone width (x) to be filtered by one or more band-pass filters (26, 27), whose mid-frequencies correspond to the fundamental frequency (.omega.) and, in some instances, to the first or further harmonic component frequencies (2.omega.) of the roll eccentricities (.DELTA.R).

  • Patent number: 5647237
Abstract: In a previous process, the influence of roll eccentricities on the output thickness of the rolled material in a roll stand is suppressed by simulating the output signal of an oscillator and supplying this value to a position or thickness control for the roll stand, where the frequency of the output signal is set according to the roll rotation speed. In the process according to the invention, the amplitude and phase of the output signal are set so that the exit thickness of the rolled material is measured with a measuring delay in relation to the thickness reduction in the roll gap. A difference signal is generated from the delayed roll screw-down signal and a measured thickness signal multiplied by the sum of one and the quotient of the rigidity of the rolled material and the roll stand. The output signal of the oscillator is corrected according to the difference between the output signal and the difference signal. The output signal is phase shifted by the amount of measurement delay for a forward slip.
