  • Patent number: 4760725
Abstract: Open-ended cylindrical shells, such as might become beverage cans or containers, are necked (and/or may be flanged) at the open end by tooling including a cooperating internal mandrel and external forming roller; at the opposite end of the shell there is a chuck to clamp and spin the shell. The chuck spins the shell while the forming roller forces the rim portion at the open end of the shell progressively into contact with the opposed mandrel to form the neck and/or the flange. The tooling is repeated in sets at regular spaced intervals between and about a pair of rotating wheels, there being a shell supported between the tools at each tool position so that continuous production is achieved within a production loop or orbit which occupies limited space. Variations in shell thickness or metallurgy can be complied with by employing a variable speed drive both for the chuck and a rotatable collar which fits the open end of the shell. Gears are part of the variable speed drive.

  • Patent number: 4720988
Abstract: An internal or external annular surface of a ring which by cold-rolling is to be profiled with accompanying tangential expansion and substantial diametrical enlargement of the ring is preliminarily profiled by a metal-shaping process other than cold-rolling, the preliminary profile having distinctly defined lateral peripheral edges spaced from the lateral walls of the workpiece. The cold-rolling is effected by a cold rolling tool having formed on the working surface thereof facing the preliminarily profiled workpiece surface a profile which is shaped to make local contact with each of the edges of the preliminary profile of the ring and thereby begin compressively stressing the ring by the local contact before the cold rolling conforms the profile of the workpiece to the profile of the tool sufficiently to substantially increase the contact of the tool profile with the workpiece profile.

  • Patent number: 4711110
Abstract: An apparatus for crimping the leading edge of continuously produced spiral pipes is disclosed. The apparatus includes upper and lower passive crimping rollers, which are rotatably mounted adjacent each other in a holder. The holder is carried by a guide rail system which slides in the axial direction of the spirally moving pipe. The holder and rollers are rotated between a down position, where the continuously produced pipe will move freely over the crimping apparatus, and an up position where the leading edge of the pipe will pass between the upper and lower crimping rollers. When the crimping apparatus is in the up position and the leading edge of the pipe is between the crimping rollers, the lower roller is raised until the rollers cooperate to crimp the leading edge of the pipe. The spirally moving pipe will exert a force on these rollers, which causes the guide means, which carries the rollers, to move axially with the pipe.

  • Patent number: 4589177
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a wheel rim for a motor vehicle, including cutting off a section of an extruded cylindrical tube to produce a hollow cylindrical rim blank, and subjecting the blank to two successive deformation steps. During the first step, only the central section of the blank is deformed radially inwardly, the diameter of the end sections remaining substantially unchanged. In the second step, only the edge portions of each end section are deformed radially outwardly, so that the region between each edge portion and the central section is unchanged in diameter. Also, the outermost part of each edge of the blank is bent into a U-shape. The rim is then gauged to finish it. The first deformation step is performed by a pair of cooperating rollers having central sections shaped to deform the central section of the blank.

  • Patent number: 4114414
Abstract: The roll comprises a solid, cylindrical, heat-treated steel rod having a threaded stud section on one end, and an externally knurled operating section on its opposite end. The stud section is adapted to thread into a bore formed in one end of the drive or work-rotating shaft of conventional roll grooving apparatus, thereby to support the operating section in the path of a conventional grooving roll which is mounted to reciprocate radially of the drive shaft between operative and inoperative positions. A circumferential groove in the operating section of the backup roll registers with a circumferential boss on the grooving roll. When one end of a piece of thin walled pipe is inserted over the operating section and the grooving roll is advanced against the pipe, the shaft is rotated and rotates the pipe so that the grooving roll forms a groove therein.

  • Patent number: 4080704
Abstract: A method of making a multi-V-grooved sheet metal pulley from a flat sheet metal strip. The strip is passed through forming rolls which preform a plurality of generally V-shaped, transversely spaced, longitudinally extending grooves in a portion of the strip, and a generally flat hub wall flange in a transversely adjacent second portion of the strip. The hub wall flange portion of the strip then is notched to preshape the flange prior to circular forming the bottom hub wall of a pulley therefrom. The preformed grooved and notched strip then is severed into individual strips, each of which provides the material for a cup-shaped sheet metal pulley. Each strip then is passed between a pair of wrapping rolls which form the strip into a circular, preferably cylindrical configuration with the strip ends located adjacent to each other. The adjacent ends of the strip then are abutted and welded together, forming a cup-shaped pulley.
