    Abstract: A fillet rolling tool for deep rolling journal fillets is provided. The tool includes a housing assembly having a cavity. A backup roller having an annular groove is disposed in the cavity and is rotatably supported by the housing assembly. A work roller is received in the annular cavity for deep rolling journal fillets. At least one cage, construction from a polymer material, has an arcuate recess that receives the work roller. The cage includes an outer wall that defines a portion of the arcuate recess. Preferably the polymer is a thermal plastic such as a high density polyethylene. Most preferably, the polymer is an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. The polymer of the present invention has a ductility, an impact strength, and a wear resistance that is superior to those of bronze. Accordingly, the polymer cage of the present invention does not fracture as easily as bronze under the lateral forces of the fillet rolling process.

    Abstract: A shaft straightening and hardening machine, including a holder for a shaft-shaped workpiece, which can be pivoted around an axis which is essentially parallel to the axis of the workpiece. The machine includes a controllable rotary drive for the holder and a coolant bath through which the holder passes as a part of its path of rotation. The holder includes at least one straightening mechanism, which is mounted at a specified point over the length of the workpiece and which acts radially upon the workpiece and can be swung sideways from said workpiece for the purpose of loading and unloading the workpiece. The holder includes several parallel straightening shafts between which the workpiece can be inserted and from which it can be removed. The end face of each straightening shaft is held in a bearing bracket, and one of the straightening shafts can be swung radially sideways. The straightening shafts have radially protruding profiling that act as the straightening elements or mechanisms.

In this manner, external teeth can be generated in the outer periphery of the metallic material with high efficiency and accuracy and without decreasing strength.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a metal working device for cold working fillets which includes an upper block journally supporting a primary roller and a secondary roller. The primary roller has a rounded outer contact surface and the secondary roller has a concave mating surface. A portion of the concave mating surface is rollingly engaged with a portion of the outer contact surface along a predetermined contact area. The predetermined contact area is greater than 90 degrees. A support area is also provided which rollingly supports the object to allow the metal working device to cold work the fillets. Lastly, a pressure supplying device supplies pressure to the upper block to provide the required pressure to cold work the fillets.

A spacing between the cold forming rollers is cyclically varied during to cyclically vary a thickness reduction of the feedstock and provide a rolled strip with a cyclically varying thickness. The thickness of the rolled strip is varied in a single pass between the cold forming rollers and the feedstock is worked so that the thickness of the rolled strip varies cyclically along its length in a ratio of least 2:1. Support beams are produced from the rolled strip, each support beam having a thickness which varies along its length.

    Abstract: Machine and method for deep rolling fillets of split-pins of engine crankshafts. Each split-pin comprises neighboring and arcuately offset crank pins connected between counter weights and has a centralized splitter fence which receives side loads from the connecting rods. Annular fillets are formed between the pins and opposite sides of the splitter fence as well as between the fillets and their associated counter weights. Limbs of the fillets at the splitter fence that describe the overlap of the split-pins are deep rolled with a high load for improving yield strength while the remaining arcuate portions of the fillets are rolled at lower loads to improve strength without undue distortion of the fence. The overlap of pin to main journals can also be rolled with increased load for increased yield strength.

The elastic annular member is formed with equally spaced recesses. Each recess has a concave bottom surface which is shaped in conformity with an outer surface of the metal ring produced around the rigid roller. A ring removing mechanism is further employed which pushes one end of the metal ring and thus thrusts the metal ring off the rigid roller when the resilient roller stops at a position wherein one of the recesses is registered with the rigid roller.

    Abstract: Boards that have been separated by a chipless cutting method using an inced blade, are twisted and, in most instances, this twist has to be corrected before boards that have been produced in this manner can be used. An apparatus in which a plurality of pairs of rollers are arranged in tandem withing a main frame is used to do this. Each pair of rollers can be pivotted about the longitudinal axis of the main frame relative to the proceding pair. This forms a board guide channel that extends in the longitudinal direction of the main frame and which is twisted approximately about the longitudinal axis of the main frame. The boards that are to be straightened pass through the board guide channel and are permanently deformed, which compensates for the twist that originally existed in the board.
