  • Patent number: 8474294
Abstract: The invention concerns a rolling stand, a rolling train, and a method for rolling a stepped preprofiled metal strip. In order to guarantee that the metal strip is free of waviness in its longitudinal direction, even after individual thickness reduction of the steps, the invention proposes that the thickness reduction be carried out on a step-specific basis according to the following mathematical relationship: ?hi/hi=?hi+1/hi+1=?=constant, where ?hi represents the amount of the thickness reduction in the region of the i-th step, and hi represents the value of the resulting thickness of the metal strip 200 after rolling in the region of the i-th step.

  • Patent number: 6702030
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for shaping pipes, tubes, liners, or casing at downhole locations in wells. Use is made of rollers bearing radially outwards against the inside wall of the pipe (etc.), the rollers being rolled around the pipe to cause outward plastic deformation which expands and shapes the pipe to a desired profile. Where one pipe is inside another, the two pipes can be joined without separate components (except optional seals). Landing nipples and liner hangers can be formed in situ. valves can be deployed to a selected downhole location and there sealed to the casing or liner without separate packers. Casing can be deployed downhole in reduced-diameter lengths and then expanded to case a well without requiring larger diameter bores and casing further uphole. The invention enables simplified downhole working, and enables a well to be drilled & produced with the minimum downhole bore throughout its depth, obviating the need for large bores.

  • Patent number: 6695063
Abstract: An improved expansion assembly for an expander tool is provided. The expander tool is used to expand a surrounding tubular body within a wellbore. The expansion assembly first comprises a piston disposed within a recess of the expander tool. The top surface of the piston defines a bearing cavity configured to closely receive a roller. A shoe is further disposed on the top surface of the piston to receive a lower portion of the roller. In one arrangement, the roller is a tapered cylindrical roller actuated by hydraulic pressure applied from within the bore of the expander tool. Actuation of the tool forces the pistons to radially extend away from the body of the tool within the recesses. This, in turn, causes the roller members to engage the inner surface of the surrounding tubular body to be expanded. Rotation of the expander tool causes the rollers to at least partially rotate within the bearing cavity.

  • Patent number: 6016678
Abstract: A tool for expanding a tube into engagement with a wall of a hole in a plate and simultaneously forming a flange on the end of the tube has a mandrel having a tapered distal portion. The mandrel receives for rotation and axial displacement a tubular cage. The cage carries expanding rolls, each of which is supported for rotation in a slot in a distal portion of the cage, is displaceable radially, is in rolling engagement with the tapered portion of the mandrel and the tube when the tool is in operation, and is skewed at a small angle to the mandrel axis so as to impart traction to the cage and the mandrel and draw them distally into the cage upon rotation of the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 5076730
Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for relieving ground pressure surrounding pvc vent pipes which have been displaced from their T-fitting traps in sewer systems. The round tubular nature of a semi-rigid pipe is changed to an elliptical or oval shape with initial insertion and rotation of a special tool. The tool being connected to a drive-shaft and rotated by an external source such as a drill motor. The rotation of the tool within the pipe progressively causes the pvc pipe to have a momentary elliptical cross-sectional shape as the tool rotates within the previously round pipe, without rotating the pipe. As the tool passes down (or "screws down") through the pipe, the pipe re-assumes its circular cross-sectional shape, and original diameter, but only after its larger-dimension elliptical cross-section has pressurized the earth duct and increased its diameter to about an inch greater than its initial (unpressured) circular diameter.

  • Patent number: 4327567
Abstract: An improved expander of this invention is used for expanding tubes into tube sheets and flaring the ends extending therefrom, such as is common practice in the manufacture of boilers. The improved expander includes both straight rolls for expanding the tubes and tapered rolls for flaring the tube ends. The rolls are carried by a cage that encircles a tapered mandrel, which when forced through the cage, causes the rolls to move relatively outwardly to deform or expand the tube. The expander also includes a thrust member that has an end that is engageable with the face of the tube sheet and a stop member carried by the cage that engages the thrust member, when the rolls have entered the tubing to the proper distance, to deform the tube the desired amount as well as flaring the ends to the proper position.

  • Patent number: 4143535
Abstract: An apparatus for performing an operation upon the end of a cylindrical workpiece consists of one or more tools mounted by a frame for rotation about a mounting axis along which the workpiece is moved. Each tool is mounted for longitudinal movement along a respective tool axis inclined inwardly toward the mounting axis in the engaging direction of movement of the workpiece and is engaged by the workpiece and pushed by it along the inclined axis. The longitudinal movement of the tool is thereby accompanied automatically by movement radially inward toward the mounting axis to perform the desired operation. Preferably a plurality of tools are provided each spring urged for movement in the direction opposite to that of the workpiece, and each freely rotatable about their tools axes, so that they gyrate about the workpiece. The tools can each be provided with a radial flange that is engaged by the workpiece in its movement to move the tool.

  • Patent number: 4090382
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for expanding and beading the end portion of a steel tube positioned within an opening of a tube sheet for use in boilers, heat exchangers and the like. The apparatus accomplishes the expansion and beading of the tube with relative portability, substantial efficiency, and minimum noise levels. An elongated housing has one end portion adapted to be inserted into the tube with a plurality of rollers mounted for rotation about the periphery. The rollers are tapered slightly and offset at an acute angle with respect to the central axis of the housing. A mandrel having a taper opposite that of the rollers is positioned therebetween such that insertion of the housing into the tube while rotatably inserting the mandrel between the rollers causes the rollers to roll into the tube along a helical path while shifting radially outward to expand the tube and develop generally axial and substantial inward forces.
