Work Between Movable Tool And Pivot (e.g., Sweep-arm Bender) Patents (Class 72/217)
  • Patent number: 5113683
Abstract: A pipe bending machine having two bending heads is endowed with two bending heads (9, 10), that each can move in the initial direction of pipe to be bent (12), each also being endowed with a bending tool that operates in a bending plane whose orientation can be modified. At least one of the bending heads (9, 10) can also move in a plane perpendicular to the initial direction of pipe (12) and holds clamping mechanism (27, 29) of the pipe, offset from the longitudinal axis of the head. In this way the head can be moved away from initial axis (11) of the pipe, the associated clamping mechanism (27, 29) in this case moving into such axis and being able to hold pipe (12) temporarily therein. This arrangement makes it possible to execute very closely-spaced bends in the median area of the pipe.

  • Patent number: 5099674
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for the manufacture of J-shaped display hooks with balled ends in a single manufacturing operation, without requiring separate handling of the display hook for the bending and ball-forming operations. A continuous length of wire is advanced incrementally and gripped tightly adjacent its forward end. The wire is severed by a cutting and forming bar, which also bends the base portion of the wire at right angles to the main axis of the wire. While the wire remains tightly gripped at its forward end, and continue to be supported adjacent its base by the cutting and forming bar, a ball-forming die is advanced against a projecting forward end of the wire, upsetting the wire end and forming an enlarged end of generally spherical configuration. Immediately thereafter, the wire is released at its forward end, and a rotary plate is actuated, causing a bend-forming element to travel through a generally circular path concentric to a cylindrical forming drum.

  • Patent number: 4384467
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming rings that is particularly suited for forming plow rings from elongated lengths of stock having irregular cross sectional shape. A length of stock (12) is positioned against a mandrel (20), the end of the stock being pre-bent from a previous bending operation, with the free end of the stock extending beyond the mandrel. A movable bending element (24) is brought into contact with the stock opposite the point of contact with the mandrel, and advanced around the mandrel partially bending the stock. A clamp (82) clamps the partially bent stock against the mandrel and a cutter (98) then cuts the stock, leaving a partial bend in the newly formed free end of the stock, the cut portion of stock being clamped to the mandrel. The length of stock is moved away from the mandrel so that the bending of the cut portion around the mandrel can be completed.

Abstract: Apparatus for producing a serpentine tube by bending a straight tube including a plurality of dies each having an arcuate surface, the dies being arranged alternately on opposite sides of the straight tube and movable in a direction toward the center axis of the straight tube and at the same time in a direction intersecting the center axis of the straight tube. During a bending operation, the dies are spaced apart from one another in a manner to impart to the straight tube and the serpentine tube such a dimensional relationship that no excess material is produced in the tube. Each die forms a set with two wings, the two wings being operative to force the straight tube against the arcuate surface of the associated die while rotatingly moving for a circumferential extent of 90 degrees each along the arcuate surface of the die. Each set of die and wings is mounted on one of a plurality of front-to-rear ball screws supported for movement by a plurality of left-to-right ball screws.

The shoe has oppositely disposed arcuately shaped outwardly facing grooves on opposite side portions and is capable of bending either thin or thick wall conduit of varying sizes, all with the same shoe by employing different radii in the opposed grooves of the shoe.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONPreviously shoes for conduit benders for bending thin wall tubing or conduit and intermediate and rigid conduit depended for their operation upon either an internal pivot point support or upon internal access permitting the application of a sizable force therein such as is often produced by a hydraulic ram to drive the shoe. These internal structures of such shoes were integral with their function and tended to limit their design.

  • Patent number: 4167865
Abstract: A hand-operated bender apparatus for forming relatively thin metal stock into parts having predetermined shapes, comprising a base, a clamp on the base for holding portions of the metal stock to be shaped, and a elongate handle which is pivotally carried on the base and which can swivel about an axis thereon. The handle carries a spring-biased slide member on which there is mounted a transverse, upstanding pin constituting a shoulder adapted for engagement with the metal stock. The clamp is in the form of a vise having a fixed jaw constituted as a die, around which the metal stock is formed. The slide member is normally biased toward the pivotal axis of the handle but can yield outwardly in a direction away from such axis as the handle is swiveled, this occurring under the action of forces transmitted through the metal stock as it is being formed. The yieldable shoulder on the handle permits the use of dies having irregular shapes.
