  • Patent number: 6766676
Abstract: A roll forming machine of the type which forms an indeterminate length panel of a desired lateral profile from a uniform width supply strip of sheet metal having a pair of parallel straight edges, wherein the machine defines a predetermined path of travel for the supply strip. The machine includes an arrangement for selectively changing the profile along an edge of the panel. The arrangement includes a mounting plate member mounted to a side of the machine and a module including first and second roll forming stations. The module is adapted for mounting to the mounting plate member with a selected one of the first and second roll forming stations along the predetermined path of travel. Structure is provided for allowing the securement of the module to the mounting plate member to be loosened, whereby the mounting plate member is movable between first and second predetermined positions wherein a selected one of the first and second roll forming stations is along the predetermined path of travel.

The outboard housing is slidable along guide rails between on-line and off-line positions. In the off-line position the turrets may be indexed to bring the second pair of arbors into a working alignment and thus reduce changeover and down time of the roll forming line.

  • Patent number: 5238047
Abstract: In curved continuous casting facilities, a roller apron is fabricated with upper and lower web rolls supported by upper and lower movable frames respectively to support the upper and lower surfaces of a web portion of a beam blank, in which the upper web rolls also support the upper surface of a rectangular strand such as a bloom; rectangular-piece rolls supported by a fixed frame to support the lower surface of a rectangular casting strand; wherein the lower web rolls can be retracted when the rectangular strand such as the bloom is being cast, and the upper and lower web rolls support their corresponding surfaces of the web and concurrently the rectangular-strand rolls support both flange-end portions of the beam blank. Consequently, tension sides of the beam blank and the rectangular strand such as bloom are positively supported to prevent problems, such as bulging, which occur during casting.

  • Patent number: 5229055
Abstract: Hollow profile elements are formed by shaping a starting workpiece that consists of multiple layers of a material having a large width-to-thickness ratio, e.g., woven fabrics or laid materials. The layers are joined by seams to define elongated pockets or channels. Shaping tools are inserted into these channels to form the profile elements with a desired cross sectional shape, which can be constant or varied. The shaping tools employ one or more endless belts that extend in closed loops around guide rollers; the belts are driven so that during the shaping process sliding friction is substantially eliminated between the material of the workpiece and the respective shaping tool.

Abstract: A machine for making corrugated fins or air centers for heat exchangers from strip stock has forming rolls, packing rolls, metering rolls and two pairs of pullout rolls, each pair having a different number of teeth to produce a different pitch of convolutions. The pairs of pullout rolls are mounted for movement apart or together under control of a cam mechanism so that one pair yielding the desired pitch can engage the centers to set the pitch while the other pair is moved apart to disengage the centers.

  • Patent number: 5156034
Abstract: An apparatus for contouring plastically deformable sheet material comprises a pair of opposed indexable turret assemblies (2, 3) each including a plurality of shaping rollers (4) comprising either solid rollers (30, 31) or split rollers (32, 33). Opposed shaping rollers (30, 31 or 32, 33) respectively have generally complementary convexly and concavely shaped circumferential profiles (30a, 31a). Upper turret assembly (3) is displaceable relative to lower turret assembly (2) by means of a fluid powered ram (10) under the control of displacement measuring means (18) and/or pressure sensing means 911). The apparatus is controlled by a microprocessor (20) which determines from stored data the optimum combination of rollers (30, 31 or 32, 33) and rolling pressure in ram (10) to achieve the required sheet material deformation and to ensure that the transverse area of contact between the rollers (30, 31 or 32, 33) and the sheet material to be deformed does not fall below a length to width ratio of 3:1.

  • Patent number: 5107695
Abstract: The apparatus comprises a pair of rotatable devices (9,11) each holding a plurality of metal shaping and/or cutting rollers (17,19;127), the rollers of one device meshing with rollers of the other device to produce specific designs or widths of material. This is made possible by merely selecting suitable rollers of both sets and when production of a specific metallic section or desired widths are terminated, other rollers are selected by rotating the rotatable devices, if another metallic section or widths are desired. When suitable rollers (17,19:127) have been selected they are locked in operating position and the operation is allowed to proceed by feeding metal strip to the machine. When another design or widths are required, the devices are unlocked, a selection is made, and the devices are again locked to produce the new metallic section or widths of material.
