  • Patent number: 4730475
Abstract: A metal workpiece such as a slab is rolled into a desired width without requiring broadsiding. The system generally involves reducing a first portion along the width of the workpiece to a first thickness while creating a second portion along the width of the workpiece having a thickness greater than the first portion thickness and having a predetermined mass. Subsequently the second portion is reduced to establish a predetermined increase in the width of the workpiece and a decrease in the thickness of the workpiece to obtain a substantially uniform thickness along substantially the entire width of the workpiece. A preferred approach includes providing a pair of cooperating work rolls at least one of which has a generally cylindrical portion and at least one adjacent tapered portion. Initial reduction is effected by employing a pair of cooperating cylindrical central portions and at least one tapered portion. This provides a workpiece with a reduced portion and an enlarged portion.

  • Patent number: 4720989
Abstract: An I-beam blank is rolled from a bloom by rolling into opposite edges of the bloom respective central triangular section notches of predetermined apex angle, apex radius of curvature, width, and height in a succession of roll passes. According to this invention the radius and apex angle of the notches are progressively increased a plurality of times during the succession of roll passes. Then the notches are pressed by rolling generally out of the bloom edges in at least one final rolling pass, thereby flattening these edges. The rolling passes are carried out between respective pairs of rolls having facing grooves bases and the roll pairs of the grooving steps are formed with respective triangular-section ridges complementary to the notches being formed. In addition the bloom is rolled repeatedly in the first pair of grooves until the material of the bloom flanking the notch mainly fills these grooves, that i until the bloom bottoms in the grooves.

  • Patent number: 4711109
Abstract: A metallic strip is hot-rolled in a succession of roll stands arranged in a row by passing the strip longitudinally in a travel direction through the stands. The strip is then compressed in the upstream stands to substantially reduce its thickness measured perpendicular to the travel direction and parallel to the strip while substantially increasing its width measured perpendicular to the travel direction and transverse to the strip. Then in the downstream stands it is compressed and tensioned without substantially increasing its width to level it and stretch it longitudinally in the travel direction. With standard steel strip this critical thickness is about 12 mm. The local band thickness is measured downstream of the upstream roll stands and the furthest downstream stand of the upstream stands is operated to eliminate any nonuniformities in thickness thus detected. The nonuniformities are detected by comparing the local band thicknesses detected with standard set-point thicknesses.

Abstract: A cascade speed control for tensionless production in a rolling mill by the measurement of stand motor current with temperature compensation. A low tension speed ratio between pairs of mill stands is calculated by successive incremental corrections. The corrections are based on the difference between a no tension current and a tension current for the motors of the mill stands as compensated for temperature variation. In one embodiment a compensation factor is calculated by taking the temperature difference of the material at the times the currents are measured and multiplying the difference by an empirical constant which relates the change in motor current to a change in temperature for a particular plant. Another embodiment illustrates temperature compensation by using current compensation values which are obtained by storing a no tension current profile for one of the mill stands.

  • Patent number: 4503700
Abstract: A rail is rolled from a hot-rolled bloom having a square or rectangular cross section by a method which is constituted by the steps of breakdown rolling, universal rolling, which is effected by causing the bloom to travel through a plurality of stands making only a single pass on each stand, base-wheel rolling, head-wheel rolling and edging. The bloom is broken down into substantially H-shaped beam blank whose cross section is symmetrical with respect to the center line of its web. In the base-wheel rolling, the flanges of the blank corresponding to the head and base of the rail are respectively rolled widthwise and thicknesswise in three or more passes using a pair of horizontal rolls and a vertical roll, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4503697
Abstract: A method for hot rolling metal slabs to strip thicknesses comprises close coupling a hot reversing mill having a coiler furnace on at least the upstream side thereof with a finishing train having at least one finishing stand and preferably at least three finishing stands. The finishing train is maintained in the open position as the slab is passed back and forth through the hot reversing mill in flat passes with the slab freely passing through the finishing train. At an intermediate thickness the workpiece is coiled in the coiler furnace. In one embodiment a downstream coiler furnace is employed and the workpiece is reduced by passing it back and forth between the coiler furnaces while it is acted upon by the hot reversing mill. The coil is finally decoiled out of the upstream coiling furnace and passed through the finishing train which has been reset to the appropriate roll gaps during the intermediate rolling stage between coiler furnaces.

  • Patent number: 4479374
Abstract: A rolling stand includes a frame and a pair of working rolls mounted on the frame centered on and rotatable about respective parallel axes and defining a nip so that a strip can pass in each of a succession of passes forming a single run through the nip so that with each pass the thickness and width of the strip are reduced. The ends of the working rolls project laterally beyond the longitudinal edges of the strip. Respective backing rolls mounted on the frame extending generally the full length of the working rolls are braced toward the nip against the working rolls to urge same against the strip. Tools displaceably mounted on the frame reduce the diameters of the projecting ends of the working rolls several times after respective passes during a single run so that the working rolls only contact the respective backing rolls along a diatance equal generally to the workpiece width.

Abstract: When two strand workpieces pass through a roll opening between two grooved working rolls on a roll stand so as to be rolled, the trailing end of one of them may leave the rolls and cause change in the roll separation. At that time mating bilateral screw-down devices are remotely controlled to adjust the roll opening at least at the position of the remaining workpiece. Alternatively in a multi-strand tandem rolling mill, the rolling speeds on roll stands upstream of a roll stand which one of the strand workpieces has left are changed by a speed ratio of (1-b.sub.2)/(1-b.sub.1) where b.sub.1 and b.sub.2 respectively designate rates of backward slip when two strand workpieces are being rolled and in the absence of one of the strand workpieces from the last-mentioned roll stand. Alternatively the roll speeds on roll stands downstream of the roll stand which one of the strand workpieces has left may be changed by a speed ratio of (1+f.sub.2)/(1+f.sub.1) where f.sub.1 and f.sub.

Abstract: A method of forming slats for venetian blinds and the like is disclosed. An elongated baked enameled metallic strip is subjected to a plurality of gradual bending increments through the use of sequential pairs of forming rollers that form a central longitudinal body section of upwardly arched configuration, longitudinal ribs which extend downwardly and outwardly from the body section and longitudinal edge sections which extend outwardly from the ribs but are curled inwardly to provide marginal edges on the strip. By bending the strip in gradual increments in a preferred sequence with a plurality of pairs of sequential rollers, slats can be formed in a continuous operation wherein bending stresses on the strip are minimized to avoid stress cracks in both the baked enamel and in the metal.
