A second die is adapted to be opposed to a second face of the plate member. A plurality of first projections are provided on the first die and arranged in a first direction with a fixed pitch. Each of the first projections is elongated in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction. A plurality of second projections are provided on the second die and arranged in the first direction with the fixed pitch. Each of the second projections is elongated in the second direction and provided with a concave portion extending in the second direction at a distal end portion thereof. The plate member is sandwiched between the first die and the second die so that the first projections and the second projections are cut into the plate member in a third direction orthogonal to the first direction and the second direction, to perform a first forging work.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming container ends includes tooling which forms dome members for can ends, which dome members include an open neck thereon. Thread lugs are formed as integral spaced apart shaped protrusions from the neck exterior. A system is also disclosed for forming quantities of a specific form of dome members, capable of later attachment to container bodies. A thin metal strip is fed through an array of progressive tooling to form blanks, from which such specific form of dome members are formed. The blanks are produced in the metal strip and connected thereto by multiple carrying strips which allow sufficient mobility of the blanks with respect to the strip to achieve precise alignment with the tooling at different stations in the progression. At the final station, completed dome members are separated from the remaining metal skeleton and moved rapidly out of the system, and the skeleton may be chopped up for recycling.

Furthermore, plastic flow is generated at a surface layer of the core metal due to partial compression by the notches at the time of pressing and compressing. Then, the waves are formed on the core metal with the notches as the top points. The notches are cut at seven sections respectively on a front surface and a rear surface of the core metal. Thus, seven waves are formed on the core metal in total. Since the notches are formed on the front and the rear surfaces of the waves, a “return” phenomenon is not generated as seen in a conventional cool working method. Thus, the waves are formed at high accuracy.
