Patent number: 8893363Abstract: A conventional blind rivet tool with modified nose housing, i.e., a rivet gun with replaceable and interchangeable nosepieces, facilitates feeding and setting of multiple diameters of blind rivets with substantially shortened exposed mandrel portions extending beyond the head flange of the rivet, all while maintaining blind rivet performance and reducing total installed blind rivet costs. A rivet with a reduced exposed mandrel protrusion relative to conventional and standardized mandrels can be enabled and more easily fed through the tool.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2013Date of Patent: November 25, 2014Inventor: Harry E. Taylor

Patent number: 8640322Abstract: Adapter for increasing the stroke length of a fastener installation tool. The adapter includes a tensile member with a first rack gear, a compressive member with a second rack gear, and a plurality of pinion gears retained within a pinion gear housing. The tensile member is mateable with the puller shaft of the installation tool and with the tensile member of an installation head. The pinion gear housing is mateable with the body of the installation tool. The distal end of the compressive member is mateable with a reducing member, which in turn mates with the outer sleeve of the installation head. Operation of the pulling tool moves the tensile member axially toward the tool body and engages the pinion gears, which in turn move the compressive member axially away from the tool body.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2011Date of Patent: February 4, 2014Inventor: Robert E. Nikkel

Patent number: 8230571Abstract: A self-attaching fastener and panel assembly wherein the free open end of the tubular barrel portion is coined, collapsed axially, flattened and deformed radially inwardly and outwardly and axially against a panel surrounding the panel opening. The method of installation includes driving the free end of the tubular barrel portion against a substantially planar die surface, deforming an end portion radially, then collapsing an intermediate portion over the radially deformed end portion, flattening the end portion, substantially thickening the tubular barrel portion and forming an annular surface engaging and supporting the panel surrounding the opening. The die member includes an annular moat surrounding a central die post and a planar die surface extending generally perpendicular to the axis of the die button.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2008Date of Patent: July 31, 2012Assignee: Whitesell International CorporationInventor: Zdravko Kovac

Patent number: 7921538Abstract: An aligner and a method for its use in staking a fastener. More specifically, the aligner guides a tip of a staking tool in some portion of a staking operation properly into alignment with a clinch portion of a staked fastener. As a result, the clinch portion is shaped into a head of a generally higher quality than would otherwise occur.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2006Date of Patent: April 12, 2011Inventor: Clark A. Denslow

Patent number: 7694399Abstract: A sheet fastening apparatus and method are provided. In another aspect of the present invention, a die assembly for forming a joint between sheets of material is disclosed wherein the die assembly includes an anvil, at least one die blade disposed adjacent to and overlapping a punch-side of the anvil, a flexible retainer, and a shield that coaxially and radially surrounds a portion of the anvil and/or die blade.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2005Date of Patent: April 13, 2010Assignee: BTM CorporationInventors: Edwin G Sawdon, Steven J Sprotberry

Patent number: 7475585Abstract: A security slug punch tool is disclosed. A typical application includes protecting curb box cover assemblies employed on catch basins along thoroughfares. The hand held tool houses a first cylinder extending beyond one end of the tool affixed to a smaller diameter cylinder drive pin. A deformable slug is secured within an elastomeric grommet at one end of the tool. An operator forcibly striking the first cylinder causes the slug to be wedged into a face opening in a bolt head, as, for example, a hexagonal opening in a bolt securing a curb box cover assembly, thereby rendering the bolt tamper proof. The punch tool and slug can be configured for securing a variety of bolts with different face openings.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2006Date of Patent: January 13, 2009Assignee: Royalty Holding LLCInventors: Clifford F. Lill, Kristopher J. Lill

Publication number: 20080302168Abstract: A breakstem rivet placing tool conventionally includes a flow restrictions for hydraulic fluid used to drive the tool in a stem pulling direction. This serves to prevent recoil of the tool due to rapid acceleration of an internal piston when the stem of the breakstem rivet breaks. Prior art flow restrictions create a jet of high velocity hydraulic fluid into the tool which may damage components by erosion. A revised fluid damper valve deflects and/or diffuses the fluid flow to avoid damage by erosion.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 19, 2007Publication date: December 11, 2008Applicant: AVDEL UK LIMITEDInventors: Angraj Kumar Seewraj, Terence Gilbert

Patent number: 7437904Abstract: A coldwork tool assembly including an outer housing and an inner housing in telescopic arrangement with each other and a retaining collar configured to accommodate a plurality of mandrel configurations. One of a plurality of various mandrels is removably coupled to the inner housing using the retaining collar to secure the mandrel to the inner housing as the inner housing moves between a contracted and an expanded position relative to the outer housing.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2006Date of Patent: October 21, 2008Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Michael D Katzenberger, James A. Hammond, Jr., George E. Anderson, Brian J. Martinek

Patent number: 6928851Abstract: A riveting apparatus has a support die with a support surface. The support surface supports a rivet that extends through a circuit board and an electrical connector. The support surface has a first inclined surface, a second inclined surface, and a depression positioned therebetween. The depression receives a head of the rivet and positionally aligns the rivet with an upper tool unit as the rivet is guided across the first inclined surface toward the second inclined surface. The upper tool unit fastens the rivet to the circuit board.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2002Date of Patent: August 16, 2005Assignee: Tyco Electronics AMP K.K.Inventor: Hiroshi Yagawa
