Abstract: A system, an authentication engine and a method are described herein for authenticating an end user and associating their set-top box with a third party web based application to stream a third party video to the set-top box. In one example, the end user may utilize a client device (e.g., computer, laptop computer, smart phone) to access via the internet the third party video provider which lists a number of videos that the end user could watch on their television. The end user would select one of the videos to watch and then their cable provider would stream the video to the end-user's set-top box to be displayed on their television. To enable this service, the authentication system authenticates the end user and associates their set-top box with the third party video provider's web based application.

The system has a residential component consisting of a control unit having a user interface a local database and a specialized router, a remote processing component having monitoring stations where the monitored network feeds are processed, and a system DBMS component that stores channel and user information in real time. The control unit is connected to the internet, such as via a wireless connection on the user's network, to retrieve remotely-stored data obtained through monitored network feeds. The control unit retrieves real-time data associated with viewable content and applies logic to switch the viewing channel or signal source for display on the television.

The application is operable to respond to an invocation by a member of a subscriber class by enabling at least one subscriber class function, wherein the subscriber class function enables the subscriber class member to define an access restriction for members of a controlled class. The application responds to an invocation by a member of the controlled class by enabling the controlled class member to access content not subject to the defined restrictions permitting the controlled class member to define preferences from content not subject to the defined restrictions. The definable preferences may include TV channel preferences and interactive games preferences. Restrictions may be defined based on channel identification, a rating associated with requested content, an elapsed viewing time, and a monetary charge.

In an exemplary embodiment, the remote viewers may be charged an access fee to receive the channels. A remote receiver decodes data packets with one or more of the port numbers to thereby receive selected ones of the original video streams.

Abstract: Implementations of the system and method use an existing management server infrastructure to deliver video-on-demand or streaming content, including real-time live streaming. Existing client content playback devices, such as IPTVs, may be employed to stream content items, obtain advertisements, track user's viewing behaviors, and the like. By reusing existing client devices, there is no need for additional hardware purchases on the user side. By reusing existing management server infrastructures, capital expenses are also reduced. In such a system, a user can watch both video-on-demand and streaming audiovisual content.

Abstract: A distributed, digital, network-based, streaming video allows users to view live streaming digital video from multiple video sources in operating rooms at any location connected to a network. One or more video sources in an operating room are connected to a streaming video encoder capable of converting the video to a network packet stream. Once the digital video stream is available on the network, it may be accessed and routed through the use of a streaming video control server. The streaming video control server is responsible for user authentication and access for remote viewing and video source selection. The control server also provides audit logging services, operating room selection and overall system resource allocation. The video control server also provides a network-based remote control interface, which enables other systems to communicate on the streaming video network, and allows for remote control of visualization from an integrated operating room control system.

The broadcast delivery infrastructure can generate a quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) signal, while the IP delivery infrastructure can generate an IP-based signal. The system uses a format converter to convert the QAM signal into a rights-protected signal expressed in an IP-compatible format. The format converter can be implemented as an OpenCable Unidirectional Receiver (OCUR) device.

The video services network includes an application program operable to develop and implement individualized usage restriction profiles for users of the set top box to control video services viewing. The application program is configured to provide a designated administrator with authority to dictate the usage restriction profile for non-designated users. The individualized usage restriction profiles include restrictions on the content of video services shown on the television for viewing by the users. The application program is configured to receive information input by the designated administrator, develop each usage restriction profile based on the input information unique to each user, and implement each usage restriction profile to control video services viewing by the users.

Abstract: System and method for providing clear screen TV broadcasting to subscribed users. Two signals are provided by the broadcasters for the same channel: a mixed signal that includes the main program and additional content to overlap portions of the main program on the display, and a clear screen signal which includes only the main program. By default, decoding machines e.g. STB at the user's location, are adapted to decode the mixed signal to output on the display the main program and the additional content. The embodiments provide a mechanism to provide the additional content separately to subscribed users and switch the decoding at the STB to the clear screen mode for decoding and outputting the clear TV signal instead of the mixed signal.

Subscribers use portable electronic devices to store digital certificates certifying the subscriber's privileges and an assigned public key. The devices can communicate with specially enabled televisions, radios, computers, or other media presentation apparatuses. These, in turn, can communicate with central databases owned by the provider, for verification purposes. Methods of the invention describe media content subscription service privilege issuing and use. The invention additionally describes methods for protecting media content transmitted to users with a variety of encryption schemes.

An exemplary embodiment identifies an authorized single media content stream of interest to a client; accesses the multi-media content stream communicated from a communication network at the client facility, unbundles the authorized single media content stream from the received multi-media content stream, and communicates the authorized single media content stream to a program content generation system operated by the client.
