Abstract: A couch top includes a top, a base, a universal joint coupling the top and the base, and actuators mounted on the base to pitch and roll the top. Feedback devices may be fitted on the rotating ends of the universal joint to provide feedback for a control loop. Each actuator has an actuated end that translates vertically to lift or lower the top. The vertical movement may be derived from a carriage riding in place on a translating inclined plane. When the actuated ends move in the same direction, they pitch the top. When the actuated ends move in the opposite directions, they roll the top. Feedback devices may be fitted on motors in the actuators to provide feedback for the control loop.

Two pair of complementary cam plates is provided on the drive shaft for each motion for the purpose of greater precision of the reproducibility of the prescribed motions. The first pair of complementary cam plates is coupled to the carriage through a first control shaft and a crank assembly consisting of a crank and a coupling, while the second pair of complementary cam plates operates in combination with the holder through a second control shaft. The crank and the coupling in the click-stop setting of the stepping transmission are in a dead center position.

Abstract: A spur gear assembly for axially mounting and supporting an end of a feed screw for each carriage and is driven from the main drive, since these feed screws of each carriage are arranged coaxially along a line parallel to a passline of the pilger mill. This spur gear allows relative rotation of the feed screws in this gear assembly mounting and a similar mounting is provided for the other screws of the pair of screws for each carriage. A first gear unit connected to the main drive causes a reciprocation of the stand along with the two feed carriages, and a second gear unit including a shaft clutch assembly is selectively brought into engagement and disengagement with the spur gear assemblies and the first gear unit to impart rotation to the screws to separately and independently advance and return the feed carriages to their starting position while one of the feed carriages continues to advance the shell through the mill.

The carriage is also provided with two chain engaging sprockets each controlled by a respective one of two air clutches. The chain engaging sprockets on the carriage normally idle with chain motion. However actuation of the controlling air clutch halts the spinning and forces the sprocket and clutch to act as a unit to thereby move the carriage linearly along the length of the chain in a direction dependent upon which portion of the chain was so engaged. Means are provided to automatically reverse the stroke, to vary the length of the stroke and to vary the speed of the stroke.
