  • Patent number: 6116108
Abstract: A connection for preventing relative movement between coupled members in a clamped joint. In particular, ring gear/differential housing members are connected across a roughened surface finish providing protrusions and allow positive load transfer without slippage. Different methods are proposed to achieve the roughening, or surface modification, of the backside of the ring gear surface, and this design provides increased frictional coefficients without adversely affecting performance of the differential assembly. The simplicity and low cost of this connection makes it particularly useful for a wide variety of these bolted assemblies.

  • Patent number: 5347880
Abstract: An aspect of the invention is an improved method for servicing a gear assembly having a gear segment and a spider for supporting the segment. The method includes the steps of providing a jack assembly with a jacking bolt mounted for radial outward movement, moving the jacking bolt radially outward, applying a separating force to the segment and disengaging the segment from the spider. Further steps involve providing a drawtight assembly with a coupler attached to the segment, applying a force to the coupler, moving the coupler radially inward and engaging the segment with the spider. Other aspects of the invention include the "jacking" apparatus for separating a segment from the spider (for service purposes) and the "drawtight" apparatus for re-attaching the segment to the spider. The invention is particularly useful in connection with large machinery, e.g., a walking dragline, involving heavy and/or unevenly-wearing gear parts and difficult field service conditions.

Abstract: A differential in a motor vehicle drive axle includes a barrel shaped case and a ring gear. The case has an outer cylindrical boss and an adjacent smaller inner cylindrical boss. The ring gear has a flat side facing the case, a plurality of self-cutting straight splines around the center of the ring gear, and a counterbore in the flat side concentric with the self-cutting splines. The self-cutting splines have a major diameter corresponding to the diameter of the inner boss so that when the ring gear is forcibly moved to an assembled position on the case, the self-cutting splines form in situ on the inner boss a plurality of mating straight splines in mesh with the self-cutting splines. The depth of the counterbore is coordinated with the length of the inner boss to achieve penetration of the outer boss into the counterbore at the time the self-cutting splines engage the inner bore so that a closed chip trap is defined ahead of the self-cutting splines.

The improvement comprises a pair of spaced spider webs and a segment-attached mounting member received between the webs. The mounting member has a pair of spaced plates, one plate against each web. Each of a group of tube-like generally cylindrical segment coupling members extends between a particular web and its adjacent plate while each of another group of coupling members extends between the other web and its adjacent plate. Abstract: An elastomeric torsional isolator comprises one or more elastomer layers disposed between a spur gear, having a pair of sloped surfaces, and a pair of rims having corresponding surfaces. The rims are attached to a flange extending from a shaft which has pinions for engaging a driven gear. By preloading the elastomer layers, the spur gear is frictionally connected to the flange and shaft, rather than mechanically engaged. The preloaded elastomer layers act as an elastomeric torsional isolator which accommodates variations in mechanical tolerances to balance the torque loading in a split torque drive system. Using elastomer layers for balancing the torque loading between a pair of torque splitting gear assemblies reduces the number of bearings required, increasing reliability and reducing part complexity.

Abstract: Apparatus for mounting a rotatable component on a rotating shaft using a non-machined torque transmitting intermediate hub member is disclosed. The hub member makes torque transmitting contact with the drive shaft and transmits that torque to the rotatable component through frictional contact at a taper on the drive shaft and at a recessed shoulder of the hub as well as by an external key on the hub periphery and a matching cut-out formed in the rotatable member. There is also a keyway and key between the drive shaft and hub for accurate alignment in assembly and disassembly. A plurality of narrow longitudinally extending rib members are integral with and are supported on the other peripheral surface of the hub member whereby the rotatable member when it is seated against the shoulder on the hub member for the first time mechanically distorts the rib members from their original shape to provide a secure but releasable fit between the hub member and the rotatable component.

Abstract: A gear comprises a hub and a gear ring mounted thereon, each formed with peripherally spaced apertures and interlocking elements extending peripherally between adjacent apertures to hold the hub and gear ring against axial movement relative to each other. The apertures of the hub and gear ring register. Torque is transmitted between the hub and gear ring by a plurality of first abutments on the hub which have radially outwardly facing surfaces adjoining respective apertures therein, a plurality of second abutments on the gear ring which have radially inwardly facing surfaces adjoining respective apertures therein and radially aligned with respective outwardly facing surfaces, and a plurality of prestressed elastomeric spring elements disposed in the registering apertures. Each spring element engages the radially aligned surfaces and is retained in the apertures by a retaining disc secured to the hub and engaging the spring element on one side of the gear.

Abstract: A bicycle sprocket wheel comprises a toothed outer annular member molded of a tough nylon plastic and a centrally disposed metal spider having a plurality of radial arms attached to the sides of the annular member to add structural rigidity thereto. The teeth of the annular member are formed with straight front and back faces and with sharp corners at the roots thereof. Such a construction reduces the cost of the mold used for molding the annular member since the cavity needed therein for the teeth can be simply machined by use of straight and circular cuts. The inner radial edge of the annular member is shaped by an insert in the mold to form sets of circumferentially spaced arcs, the arcs of each set having a common radius different from the other sets to accomodate spiders having arms of different radial lengths.

Abstract: A chain drive sprocket formed of a plurality of sprocket segments arranged seriatim alternately to define a continuous equiangularly spaced annular series of sprocket teeth with a first group of the sprocket segments having a different number of teeth from the alternating second group. Each of the segments may have a similar number of mounting bolt holes, which, in the circular sprocket arrangement, are equiangularly spaced about the axis of the sprocket. The sprocket segments are of different angular extent and the end bolt holes of different sprocket segments may be spaced differently from the end surfaces of the sprocket segments. The sprocket radii centered between opposed adjacent end surfaces may be angularly spaced from the radial centerline through the root between the end teeth of the sprocket segments at opposite sides of the adjacent end surfaces.

Abstract: Spur gears of which the engagement is made noiselessly because of three adjustment functions wherein the central errors of the gears as rotary bodies are compensated by specific method of freeing the wheel center of a gear in a train of gears. The foundation parts (rim parts) of the gear teeth are subjected to qualitative treatment so as to have a large elasticity against maximum bending. The moment of forces working on said teeth are made to have a ring shape and the gears are arranged to have a large backlash. The holding mechanism is constructed so that the rotational center of the ring-shaped gears may be slightly movable in relation with the rotation center of the gear shaft. Backlash due to excessive vibration of the wheel center is prevented by providing a P.C.D.
