The variable compression ratio apparatus with reciprocating piston mechanism with extended piston offset of the invention has a rocker arm/lever assembly pivotally mounted on a crankpin of a crankshaft and a fulcrum which moves along only within confines of a pathway/guide. This confined pathway/guide itself can be either pivoted to swing from side to side on a pivot or can move only along a predefined path towards the crankshaft and away in its own defined tracks. A swing or move of the pathway/guide leads to a corresponding change in stroke positions of the piston within the cylinder. Such construction allows a simple and easy way to vary compression ratio of the engine. At the same time all benefits of the reciprocating piston mechanism with extended piston offset are preserved.

  • Patent number: 5946968
Abstract: A swing mechanism for wave-producing ornament. The ornament includes a base and a liquid container and the swing mechanism is mounted inside the base with a top container holder projecting from the base to fixedly connect the liquid container thereto. The swing mechanism includes a round disc which is rotated by a motor in the base of the ornament, a connecting rod pivotally connected to the round disc near an outer periphery thereof, and a sleeve defining a downward open cylindrical inner space with a narrowed lower end for an upper half part of the connecting rod to extend into. The upper half part of the connecting rod are two upward extended arms which slide up and down in the cylindrical inner space like a piston. When the round disc is rotated, the connecting rod moves in circumferential movement, bringing the sleeve and accordingly the liquid container fixedly connected to a top of the sleeve to swing relative to the base of the ornament.

Abstract: An engine for generating rotational torque through the oscillating movement of lever arms. The inventive device includes an elongated cylinder having first and second opposed cylinder heads. A pair of pistons are oppositely disposed within the cylinder and coupled together by a connecting rod. At least one lever arm is pivotally mounted at a first end thereof to the connecting rod between the pistons. The lever arm is also pivotally mounted at a medial portion thereof exterior of the cylinder to a mounting plate. A flywheel is rotatable mounted to the mounting plate and engages a second end of the lever arm, whereby oscillation of the lever arm in response to piston movement is translated into rotational movement of the flywheel.

  • Patent number: 5465636
Abstract: A variable length crank arm in a windshield wiper system provides a depressed park position for an associated wiper blade when the direction of rotation of a drive motor is reversed. The crank arm relies on an eccentric driver to vary its length between a first length and a longer second length. When the eccentric driver is rotated in a first direction to wipe the windshield, a spring loaded pin keeps the eccentric driver rotatably fixed to an output arm with the crank arm consequently at the first length. The spring loaded pin also engages a cam slot in a cam plate, the cam plate rotating freely with the output arm and the eccentric driver in the first direction. To move the blade to the depressed park position, the direction of rotation of the drive motor is reversed. This causes the cam plate to become rotatably stopped, with the now stationary cam slot forcing the pin out of engagement with the output arm.

  • Patent number: 5255572
Abstract: A variable stroke mechanism provides a means for varying the stroke and leverage of a linkage between reciprocating power source and crankshaft. The mechanism includes a lever connected at one end to the reciprocating power source and at the other end to the crankshaft with a variable fulcrum point between the two ends. The lever forms a longitudinally extending slot for containing a fulcrum member, the other surfaces of which, while generally cylindrical, secures a series of parallel and equiangularly displaced cylindrical roller bearings. The top of the slot formed within the lever is a flat bearing surface and the opposing bottom surface contains a series of semicircular channels forming a gear train sized and located to successively engage the roller bearings on the fulcrum member and said bearings serving as gear teeth such that rotation of the fulcrum member changes the position of the fulcrum point relative to the lever.

Two counter-rotating balance masses are used, one on the crankshaft and one on a separate balance shaft. These balance masses lead the throw of the crankshaft by more than 180 degrees of rotation. The axis of the balance shaft is positioned so that a line connecting it and the axis of the crankshaft is inclined with respect to the cylinder axes toward the heavier piston of the machine. The new technique is also applicable to other machines having separate parallel cylinders in which pistons of unequal mass reciprocate out of phase.
