Variable compression ratio apparatus with reciprocating piston mechanism with extended piston offset
Patent number: 8671895Abstract: A variable compression ratio apparatus with means to vary compression ratio of an internal combustion engine is provided. The variable compression ratio apparatus with reciprocating piston mechanism with extended piston offset of the invention has a rocker arm/lever assembly pivotally mounted on a crankpin of a crankshaft and a fulcrum which moves along only within confines of a pathway/guide. This confined pathway/guide itself can be either pivoted to swing from side to side on a pivot or can move only along a predefined path towards the crankshaft and away in its own defined tracks. A swing or move of the pathway/guide leads to a corresponding change in stroke positions of the piston within the cylinder. Such construction allows a simple and easy way to vary compression ratio of the engine. At the same time all benefits of the reciprocating piston mechanism with extended piston offset are preserved.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2012Date of Patent: March 18, 2014Inventor: Michael Inden -

Patent number: 5572904Abstract: An engine for generating rotational torque through the oscillating movement of lever arms. The inventive device includes an elongated cylinder having first and second opposed cylinder heads. A pair of pistons are oppositely disposed within the cylinder and coupled together by a connecting rod. At least one lever arm is pivotally mounted at a first end thereof to the connecting rod between the pistons. The lever arm is also pivotally mounted at a medial portion thereof exterior of the cylinder to a mounting plate. Patent number: 5471891Abstract: A music box ornament transmission mechanism includes a crankshaft having one end coupled to the output shaft of a driving mechanism of a music box and an opposite end coupled with a crankpin. A rocker has a supporting end turned in a hole on a rib above the bottom cover of the music box and a free end hung on the crankpin and linked to a tappet rod at the bottom of an ornament, wherein when the crank shaft is rotated by the driving mechanism of the music box, the rocker is driven to impart alternating vertical movements to the ornament.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1993Date of Patent: December 5, 1995Inventor: Corrina Chen

Patent number: 5465636Abstract: A variable length crank arm in a windshield wiper system provides a depressed park position for an associated wiper blade when the direction of rotation of a drive motor is reversed. The crank arm relies on an eccentric driver to vary its length between a first length and a longer second length. When the eccentric driver is rotated in a first direction to wipe the windshield, a spring loaded pin keeps the eccentric driver rotatably fixed to an output arm with the crank arm consequently at the first length. The spring loaded pin also engages a cam slot in a cam plate, the cam plate rotating freely with the output arm and the eccentric driver in the first direction. To move the blade to the depressed park position, the direction of rotation of the drive motor is reversed. This causes the cam plate to become rotatably stopped, with the now stationary cam slot forcing the pin out of engagement with the output arm.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1994Date of Patent: November 14, 1995Assignee: ITT Automotive Electrical Systems Inc.Inventors: Christopher H. Patent number: 5309779Abstract: A crank mechanism for the transformation of a rotary movement of a crank supported in a crankcase into reciprocating movement of a piston in a cylinder, includes an open kinematic chain composed of three pivotally connected rods with the ends of the chain being pivotally connected to the crankcase. The piston is connected to one of the intermediate pivotal connections of the three rods by another rod and a crank pin of the crank mechanism is connected to the other intermediate pivotal connection of the three rods by still another rod. Four dead centers can be obtained with the crank mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1991Date of Patent: May 10, 1994Inventor: Cosimo Sarno

Patent number: 5255572Abstract: A variable stroke mechanism provides a means for varying the stroke and leverage of a linkage between reciprocating power source and crankshaft. The mechanism includes a lever connected at one end to the reciprocating power source and at the other end to the crankshaft with a variable fulcrum point between the two ends. The lever forms a longitudinally extending slot for containing a fulcrum member, the other surfaces of which, while generally cylindrical, secures a series of parallel and equiangularly displaced cylindrical roller bearings. The top of the slot formed within the lever is a flat bearing surface and the opposing bottom surface contains a series of semicircular channels forming a gear train sized and located to successively engage the roller bearings on the fulcrum member and said bearings serving as gear teeth such that rotation of the fulcrum member changes the position of the fulcrum point relative to the lever.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1992Date of Patent: October 26, 1993Inventor: William C. Patent number: 5253541Abstract: A pumping mechanism particularly adapted for coupling a rotating prime mover to the sucker rod of an oil well lift pump is disclosed. A linkage assembly comprised of a V-shaped floating link and two grounded links provides straight line, reciprocating motion from a rotary input, without the massive horsehead cam and flexible cable employed by conventional oil well pumping units. A driving dyad coupled to the floating link connects the linkage assembly to the prime mover, and a counterweight is carried by one of the grounded links.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1990Date of Patent: October 19, 1993Assignee: Regents of the University of MinnesotaInventors: Kevin L. Patent number: 5146749Abstract: An improved technique for balancing inertia forces and rocking couples of a Ross-type Stirling machine (U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,138,897; 4,532,819 and 4,738,105). Two counter-rotating balance masses are used, one on the crankshaft and one on a separate balance shaft. These balance masses lead the throw of the crankshaft by more than 180 degrees of rotation. The axis of the balance shaft is positioned so that a line connecting it and the axis of the crankshaft is inclined with respect to the cylinder axes toward the heavier piston of the machine. The new technique is also applicable to other machines having separate parallel cylinders in which pistons of unequal mass reciprocate out of phase.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1991Date of Patent: September 15, 1992Inventors: James G. Patent number: 5022157Abstract: A transmission mechanism for a scroll sawing machine is disclosed. An upper counter weight and a horizontal counter weight are secured to the lower end of a rocker arm, which has its top end secured to the scroll saw blade upper driving arm, and carried to move by the transmission shaft of a motor. The rotation of the transmission shaft of the motor drives the upper counter weight to rotate so as to eliminate any possible vertical shock waves, and simultaneously drives the rocker arm to move up and down so as to eliminate any possible horizontal shock waves.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1990Date of Patent: June 11, 1991Inventor: Andy Chang
