  • Patent number: 5360072
Abstract: A drill rig which is equipped with one or more safety mechanisms designed to prevent injuries to rig operators. In a first embodiment, the safety mechanism includes a barrier which is shiftably mounted to the rig and surrounds the drilling tool when the barrier is in the closed position. The barrier includes a key member which must be fitted into a sensor-equipped keyhole in the rig for the drilling tools to operate. A brake may also be connected to the drill spindle to stop rotation until the barrier is closed. In a second embodiment, a sensor is connected to a delay timer. The sensor is also connected to the clutch and transmission and alerts the operator that the clutch is disengaged but the transmission is not in neutral by sounding a warning buzzer after a predetermined time. If the operator fails to actuate a disconnect switch by shifting to a neutral position within a second predetermined time, a second delay timer activates to shut off the engine.

  • Patent number: 4373406
Abstract: A machine tool has a pallet transfer system comprising a rotary deck having a pair of pallets oppositely disposed about a vertical rotary transfer axis, wherein at the transfer position, the pallets are further movable along a horizontal linear transfer axis toward and away from the pallet transfer system. A vertical guard plate is affixed to the rotatable section or deck of the transfer system, and the plane of the guard plate passes through the rotary transfer axis at an oblique angle to the linear transfer axis. The rotatable guard plate interacts with an elastomeric seal at the interface of a guard opening in a stationary guard assembly on a machine tool to substantially confine coolant overspray and the like within the machine guard enclosure. By passing obliquely across the linear transfer axes of the pair of parallel pallets, substantially full access of a stationary pallet lying outside the machine guard enclosure may be had.

  • Patent number: 4307798
Abstract: The invention is related to a safety device for a press machine or the like. The safety device includes a first guard plate which slidably extends over the machine access area and is powered by an air cylinder having a movable rod connected to a movable arm of the first guard plate. The device also has a second guard plate slidably attached to the first guard plate which has a switch means for deactivating the air cylinder and therefore stopping the forward motion of the first guard plate whenever the second guard plate exhibits movement toward said first guard plate. For example, when a user's hand is in the access area and the second guard plate strikes the hand thereby slidably moving the second guard plate toward the first, the safety device is deactivated and the guard plates move away from the machine access area.

  • Patent number: 4295421
Abstract: A sheet-fed rotary printing press having lower and upper blanket cylinders in running engagement with an impression cylinder to form nips accessible through an access space. The driving means for the cylinders includes an inching circuit and a drive enabling circuit. An interlock switch adjacent the access space is connected in the drive enabling circuit. A safety subassembly and a washing subassembly are provided with quickly disengageable means for mounting the subassemblies in position successively in the access space. The safety subassembly includes a guard plate having a normal position in which the plate closes off the access space and forms a sheet guide. A first disengageable linkage couples the guard plate to the interlock switch so that when the plate is in its normal position the enabling circuit is enabled for normal driving of the press and so that when the guard plate is absent from its normal position the press is limited to inching movement.

  • Patent number: 4279335
Abstract: A hollow clearance indicator is mounted for reciprocable movement toward and away from a fixed machine work area. A movable work-forming element is received in an aperture of the clearance indicator to effect an operation on a workpiece in the machine work area upon actuating a drive output of the machine to drive the movable element into engagement with the workpiece. The clearance indicator is drivingly connected to a safety device which monitors the work area to ensure it is clear of any obstacles, particularly an operator's fingers. The safety device features a rotary cam control drivingly connected between the clearance indicator and a manually-controlled drive input for selectively controlling operation of the drive output in relation to clearance indicator movement.

  • Patent number: 4137795
Abstract: A safety guard apparatus for a power press prevents the ram of the press from descending until the safety guard is in position to protect the operator. On presses which are equipped with part revolution clutches, the safety guard apparatus causes the ram to stop if the safety guard sensor is raised during operation. The safety guard is reciprocably mounted in a frame attached to the power press, and a sensing member is movably mounted on the safety guard. The bottom edge of the sensing member extends below the safety guard, and upward movement of the sensing member moves a switch-contacting rod out of engagement with a normally closed switch which is held open by the rod. The safety guard is raised and lowered by a power cylinder, and when the sensing member is raised and the normally closed switch closes, the power cylinder raises the safety guard.

  • Patent number: 4071128
Abstract: A blow molding machine wherein a shield is movable to and from an operative position in which it prevents access to the mold sections. The hydraulic motors which move the mold sections can receive pressurized fluid only when the shield is locked in the operative position by a roller. When the roller is retracted from its arresting position, a mechanical power train automatically closes valves which are installed in conduits connecting the motors with oil pumps. The valve elements of the valves are mechanically coupled to each other and to the roller, and are biased by a spring which tends to maintain the roller in the arresting position. A single-acting hydraulic cylinder is employed to move the roller from the arresting position. The shield can be moved by hand and/or by a double-acting hydraulic cylinder.
