  • Patent number: 5628234
Abstract: An electro-mechanical actuator has two motors which normally operate at the same speed and combine (sum) to move a load via a rotary actuator output member. If the motors begin to operate at different speeds, this indicates that the system has failed, and the output member is automatically decoupled from the remainder of the actuator. This leaves the output member free to rotate relative to the remainder of the actuator. The speeds of the motors are monitored by a differential mechanism which produces a rotary output proportional to the average of the two motor speeds. This average is normally the same as the speed of the output member. Decoupling of the output member occurs when this average deviates from the output member speed.

  • Patent number: 5494242
Abstract: A switch machine for railroad tracks is provided having a low vertical profile without increasing the axial length of existing switch machines. Also, the capability of being operated by an electric motor, hand crank or hand throw operation has been retained within these new dimensional constraints. A particular electric motor and gearbox combination permits a low overall profile due to its compact size. A worm gear shaft serves the dual purpose of driving a worm wheel and coupling to a hand crank, thus maintaining the low profile while increasing the functionality of the shaft. In addition, a hand throw drive shaft is provided adjacent to a crank drive shaft in order to provide a hand throw operation while further maintaining the low profile of the switch machine.

  • Patent number: 5267478
Abstract: A device for the rapid precision positioning of a heavy carriage employs stationary positioning bar, for instance a part of a linear electric motor or a gear rack, and a cooperating moving part of the linear motor or a motor attached to the carriage. The carriage is rapidly and roughly displaced with a further drive which may be constituted by a further gear wheel that cooperates with a gear rack and is driven by a separate motor attached to the carriage. This further drive additionally delivers a certain force for the final positioning in such a way that the play between the gear wheel and the gear rack is eliminated by biasing. Instead of a second gear wheel together with its motor a toothed belt, also driven by a separate motor, a pneumatic cylinder or a linear motor may be used. These are mounted separately from the carriage and ar principally fixed in space.

A superposed motor in the form of a controllable electric motor having small power acts in connection with a worm gear transmission on the superposed input of the superposed transmission unit. Synchronous running of the main drive and the auxiliary drive or the drive motors thereof is achieved by a unilateral drive control. This results in a uniform power and load input independently of the wear of the chain and chain wheels.

  • Patent number: 4858491
Abstract: A mechanical actuator assembly which automatically releases the load controlled by the actuator when the actuator jams or otherwise fails. The actuator assembly has two kinetic energy sources, the outputs of which are normally summed for application to the load. A monitoring device monitors the two kinetic energy outputs. When the relationship between those outputs deviates substantially from a predetermined relationship, the load is disconnected from the actuator assembly.

  • Patent number: 4829850
Abstract: A dual engine drive system for a single propeller shaft includes a single torque-combining gearbox separated from the engines by gearbox input shafts. The engines, gearbox and propeller shaft are mounted as a unit on a common support frame adapted for installation in existing fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft. Each input shaft drives its own primary gear train within the gearbox. Each gear train includes its own output gear coupled to the propeller shaft through an overrunning clutch. An auxiliary drive train driven by the propeller shaft drives redundant propeller governors, an overspeed governor, and an oil pump for lubricating the propeller shaft and auxiliary gear train. The primary gear trains also drive oil pumps for lubricating their own gearbox sections. The three oil pumps are in separate subcircuits of a common oil circuit, and a mechanism is provided for enabling an operating oil pump of one subcircuit to supply oil to another subcircuit if the oil pump in such other circuit fails.

  • Patent number: 4760989
Abstract: A valve operator powered selectively either by an electric motor or by a manually operable handwheel, the driving connections from both the motor and the handwheel to the valve including one or more planetary gear sets each having a central pinion rotatable by the motor, a ring gear surrounding the pinion, and planet gears interposed between and meshed with the pinion and the ring gear, the planet gears being rotatable about their own axes and mounted eccentrically on a spider member rotatable about the gear axis, the spider member being operable by its rotation to transmit operating power to the valve being controlled. The ring gears of all of the gear sets are fixed in a rotatable gear case which is turned by the handwheel. A pair of non-reversing torque control devices, disposed respectively between the gear set and the motor, and between the gear set and the handwheel, prevent rotation of the motor by operation of the handwheel, and rotation of the handwheel by operation of the motor.

  • Patent number: 4685550
Abstract: In an actuation system having a pair of motors simultaneously operable for driving a movable member through a torque-summing gear box, there is a need to have a simply constructed, minimal cost, light weight quick disconnect mechanism operable to disconnect a motor which has failed fixed so that the other motor can continue to operate. The quick disconnect mechanism utilizes a tapered jaw clutch connecting driving and driven elements in the drive train between the motor and the torque-summing gear box, a ball detent mechanism for holding the clutch either engaged or disengaged and a short duty cycle solenoid. The solenoid can be momentarily energized to release the ball detent mechanism to permit an axial force derived from the driven member being back driven to separate the clutch and thereafter, the solenoid is de-energized to enable the ball detent mechanism to maintain the clutch disengaged.

  • Patent number: 4662245
Abstract: An infinitely variable transmission requiring no external controls is shown in its preferred embodiment of the present invention as including a power housing rotatably mounted on an input and an output shaft. The output shaft includes a planetary cage and planetary gears located in the interior of the power housing. The planetary gears are in gearing relation with a sun gear located on the input shaft in the interior of the power housing and also in gearing relation with a ring gear formed as part of the power housing. Lubricant is provided in the interior of the power housing. If the load is sufficient to cause slippage, the resistance of the load coupled to the input rotation causes the power housing to rotate in a direction opposite to the direction of the input and output shafts when the output is initially accelerated.

  • Patent number: 4644819
Abstract: High-low speed drive system includes a main drive shaft which may be selectively driven off one or the other of a pair of continuously driven high and low speed shafts by selective engagement and disengagement of associated pneumatic operated disc clutches. Such clutches have fast response times, and the clutch associated with the low speed shaft acts as a brake when engaged to rapidly decelerate the main drive shaft down to the speed of the low speed shaft. The timing of both the high speed and low speed pneumatic operated disc clutches are closely controlled so that the low speed clutch is engaged practically instantaneously with the disengagement of the high speed clutch. The clutches are located in substantial radial alignment with each other in close proximity to the gear train between the high and low speed shafts and main drive shaft within the main housing for ease of maintenance and simplified porting of fluid through lines on the same path to all of the clutches.
