    Abstract: A starter motor construction including a drive shaft and a spline having an external helical thread is disposed concentrically of the shaft and rotates therewith. An internally threaded pinion is engaged with the spline and moves axially outward on rotation of the drive shaft against the force of a biasing spring to effect engagement of the pinion with a ring gear on the flywheel of the engine. A cushioning mechanism is incorporated between the drive shaft and the spline and includes a pair of metal plates, one of which is secured to the drive shaft and the other to the spline. A resilient disc composed of a rubber-like material is bonded to the opposed faces of the plates and is provided with a continuous peripheral groove. The cushioning mechanism acts to absorb radial torque and axial force as the pinion is moved into engagement with the ring gear.

The starter drive includes two serially arranged resilient members between a driven clutch member and the sleeve on which the starter drive is slidably mounted. The housing is resiliently suspended between the two resilient members.

The shift lever operatively coupling the plunger 7 of the electromagnetic switch 4 with the pinion assembly is coupled to the plunger via an engager member 15 slidably disposed in the cylindrical bore formed in the plunger. The engager member is urged backward with respect to the plunger by a helical spring 17 disposed around the engager within the bore of the plunger. When the plunger is attracted from the initial front position toward the stationary core 8 of the electromagnetic switch, the resilient support means yields first to allow a backward translation of the pivot support of the shift lever; the spring urging the engager yields only afterwards.

The starter includes a d.c. motor having an armature rotary shaft which incorporates an overrunning clutch and six or more magnetic poles which are defined by permanent magnets disposed circumferentially on the inner surface of a tubular yoke for forming a magnetic path. Provision of six or more magnetic poles on the inner surface of the yoke enables a reduction in the thickness of the yoke and the diametrical thickness of the armature core since the required thicknesses of the yoke and the armature core are inversely proportional to the number of field magnetic poles. Accordingly, it is possible to incorporate the overrunning clutch inside the armature rotary shaft without any increase in the overall diameter of the starter. Thus, it is possible to achieve a reduction in the overall size of the starter.
