Patent number: 4838100Abstract: A coaxial type starter used to start an engine of a vehicle is disclosed. The starter includes a d.c. motor having an armature rotary shaft which incorporates an overrunning clutch and six or more magnetic poles which are defined by permanent magnets disposed circumferentially on the inner surface of a tubular yoke for forming a magnetic path. Provision of six or more magnetic poles on the inner surface of the yoke enables a reduction in the thickness of the yoke and the diametrical thickness of the armature core since the required thicknesses of the yoke and the armature core are inversely proportional to the number of field magnetic poles. Accordingly, it is possible to incorporate the overrunning clutch inside the armature rotary shaft without any increase in the overall diameter of the starter. Thus, it is possible to achieve a reduction in the overall size of the starter.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1988Date of Patent: June 13, 1989Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Toshinori Tanaka

Patent number: 4738148Abstract: A starter drive is disclosed for a starting system of an internal combustion engine. A pinion is rotatably mounted on the starter motor shaft for engagement with the ring gear on the fly wheel of the engine. A drive sleeve disposed coaxially of the shaft is coupled with the pinion through an overrunning clutch. A helical cam and follower are connected between the shaft and the drive sleeve for advancing and retracting the pinion according to the relative speeds of the drive sleeve and the shaft. A friction brake is provided for the drive sleeve to restrain it against rotation during advancing movement of the starter drive. The starter motor has a permanent magnet field and the armature is connected across an electromagnet by the starter switch when it is turned off to provide dynamic braking for the motor. The electromagnet coacts with the permanent magnet brake to disable the friction brake while the motor is slowing down.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1987Date of Patent: April 19, 1988Inventor: Peter Norton

Patent number: 4718290Abstract: A pinion shaft starter for internal combustion engines having its pinion coupled to the shaft of the starter motor through an overruning clutch is disclosed in which a dividing wall member is mounted to define in the starter housing a first chamber located on the side of the pinion and a second chamber on the side of the starter motor, with a dust discharging vent formed in the first chamber, at a circumferential point externally of the wall member. The wall member is provided to encircle the external circumference of the overrunning clutch regardless of the position of the clutch which is axially moved by the solenoid switch to bring the pinion into or out of engagement with the ring gear on the flywheel through an opening formed in the starter housing. To insure sealing between the outside clutch circumference and wall member, an annular ring is provided along the inside periphery of the wall member.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1986Date of Patent: January 12, 1988Assignee: Kawasaki Jukogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Nobuyoshi Murata, Kozo Watanabe

Patent number: 4695735Abstract: A starter drive for an internal combustion engine in which the starter drive is mounted within the starter housing, and an ignition key activated solenoid for energizing the motor of the starter drive is contained in a solenoid housing that is attached to the starter housing and is integral therewith. The solenoid has a solenoid coil and an annular armature, and upon the energization of the solenoid coil by the connection of such solenoid coil to the battery through the ignition key, the annular armature, which is normally spring biased away from the solenoid coil, is magnetically attracted thereto. This movement of the annular armature establishes an electrical contact between a first terminal, which is connected to the battery, and a second contact which is connected to the starter motor.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1986Date of Patent: September 22, 1987Assignee: Facet Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: John R. Patent number: 4662233Abstract: A starter includes two electric drive motors (1, 2), with parallel axes (3, 4), coupled to the same reduction gear (11, 14) whose output shaft (15) is connected to a single Bendix starter (18). Shaft (6) of one of the motors (1) exhibits a reversible thread (23) on which is mounted a nut pinion (7), engaged with a gear wheel (11) of the reduction gear and further connected to control lever (27), which is connected to Bendix starter (18). When first electric motor (1) is started, nut pinion (7) is braked in rotation by passive resistances, and therefore moved axially, which, by lever (27), causes the advance of Bendix starter (18), bringing pinion (21) of the latter to engage with ring gear (22) of the internal combustion engine.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1985Date of Patent: May 5, 1987Assignee: Societe de Paris et Du RhoneInventor: Alfred B. Patent number: 4627299Abstract: An engine starter for engagement with the starting gear of an engine to be started. The engine starter has a power shaft rotatably driving a secondary driving clutch member through mutually engageable straight splines. The secondary driving clutch member drives the secondary driven clutch member through mutually engageable inclined dentil teeth which, in turn, rotatably drive a sleeve through mutually engageable helical splines. The sleeve rotatably drives a primary driving clutch member through mutually engageable helical splines which, in turn, drive the pinion gear through mutually engageable primary dentil teeth. An open ended housing is provided to enclose the several clutch members, the housing being provided with removable abutment means for containing the several clutch members therein. A first biasing element is provided between the secondary driven clutch member and the primary driving clutch member, and second biasing means are provided between the secondary driven clutch member and the housing.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1984Date of Patent: December 9, 1986Assignee: Facet Enterprises, Inc.Inventor: Harold R. Patent number: 4624351Abstract: The friction disc clutch for a motor vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine comprises a flywheel which is driven through a rotationally elastic element by the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine. The mass-spring system of the drive path of the clutch is so dimensioned that natural vibrations occur in or below the idling rotation rate range of the internal combustion engine. The rotationally elastic element can be bridged over for rotation rates in the range of and below the idling rotation rate in order to prevent resonance effects in idling and in the starting of the internal combustion engine. The bridge-over clutch can be formed by a pinion of the starter motor. Alternatively, centrifugal clutches can be used.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1984Date of Patent: November 25, 1986Assignee: Sachs-Systemtechnik GmbHInventors: Dieter Lutz, Wolfgang Thieler
